as the New Orleans men ; most excellent men, em-
bracing representatives of all the then modern battle-
fields.

2
Early io July, proceeded by steamer Louisiana
Belle to Baton Rouge. When about to embark, a
professional negro hunter appeared with a deed of
Private McRae, of Co. C, (a New Orleans man,)
who fell in the "forefront" at Port Hudson,
claiming him as a slave. (Till then, no one sus-
pected that he had a drop of negro blood in his
veins.) The slave hmiter was induced to make him-
self scarce.
Went into quarters at U. S. barracks, Baton
Rouge; then went into camp at junction of Bayou
Sara and Clinton roads.
Engaged in "Battle of Baton Rouge" Aug. 5, '62;
losing heavily in killed and wounded. Regiment
thanked for its bravery by Gen. Butler, in general
orders. A large number of our wounded were
drowned while en route to New Orleans, soon after
the battle, by the sinking of steam transport " White-
man," in collision with a Federal gun-boat.
At evacuation of Baton Rouge in fall of '62, pro-
ceeded to Carrolton and went into Camp in orange
grove in rear of levee.
Then removed to Camp Lewis, and were, with the
21st Indiana, 4tli Wisconsin and 6th Michigan Regi-
ments, constituted the "Veteran Brigade," Col.
Paine commanding. Made short expedition up the
river to St. James Court House, capturing supplies.
Moved to Camp Williams, an infernal death-trap.
Then went into camp just in rear of Carrolton.
Proceeded by Steamer Algerine to Bonnet Carre
early in '63. In camp there till May. Maintained
outpost at Lake Pontchartrain, commanded by Capt.
Trask, who captured rebel paymaster with upwards
of $20,000 in good money, and a large quantity of
quinine.
8
This force made an expedition to Pontchachoula,
which met with a determined resistance, in wliich
the enemy was entirely routed.
Made two expeditions to Amite river, via Doyle's
plantation. Sharp fighting on both occasions. Dur-
ing last of these expeditions, ordered to Port Hudson
ria Baton Rouge. Made forced march to Port
Hudson, reaching there May 22, '63. Engaged in
assaults of May 27 and June 14, and siege opera-
tions at Port Hudson.
During this Siege, a large number of the Regiment,
both officers and privates, volunteered in the assault-
ing column of one thousand men, known as the
" Forlorn Hope," in which Lieut. Col. Bickmore
was in command of one wing. In Aug., '63, marched
to Baton Rouge; went into camp across the bayou
above the town.
Embarked on Steamer North America for Algiers;
transferred there to ship W. T. Wentworth (in tow)
for Sabine Pass, Texas. Returned thence to Algiers
and proceeded by rail to Berwick Bay. Marched
thence via Franklin, New Iberia and Vermillionville
to Opelousas. Marched back to New Iberia, went
into permanent camp ; Regiment re-enlisted there.
Marched thence to Franklin and encamped.
Thence by Steamer Red Chief to Berwick Bay, and
thence by rail to Algiers ; crossed to New Orleans
and prepared for veteran furlough.
During this Teche campaign, Co. G, Capt. Hobbs,
and D, Capt. Wis well, were detailed by General
Orders and served as Head Quarters Guard.
Embarked for New York on steamer Arago; thence
by steamer Katahdin to Fall River, thence by rail to
Augusta, where 30 day furloughs were granted.
Rendezvoused at Augusta at expiration of furlouui
and were tendered a banquet in rotunda of capit.
address made by Gov, Coney.
Proceeded by rail to Portland, and embarked on
Steamer Merrimac in March, '64, for New Orleans.
Went into camp at Carrolton, then proceeded by
steam'r Geo. Peabody to Baton Rouge and encamped.
Next proceeded by steamer Starlight to Morganzia
bend and encamped ; taking part in the erection of
heavy earth- works, as also in expedition to Mount
Adams, Miss.
Ordered to proceed by Steamer Magenta to Algiers,
preparatory to embarking on a secret expedition.
Went into camp at Algiers, and there ex-
changed our Austrian for Springfield rifles. Em-
barked under sealed orders, (four Companies on Str.
T. A. Scott, and six Companies on steamer Tillie;
destination was Fortress Monroe for orders ; then up
James River to Bermuda Hundreds, where we disem-
barked and joined Gen. Butler's forces, upon the
right bank of the James river. Engaged in expedi-
tion to Deep Bottom at time of mine explosion at
Petersburg. Sharp skirmishing all the time; retired
in the night, by orders.
Orders to march by night to Bermuda Hundreds
and embark for Washington to meet Early's forces,
proceeded from Bermuda Hundreds to Washington
by steamer Elcid. Embarked on cars for Frederick,
Md. ; order then countermanded ; proceeded to
Tenallytown and went into camp.
Marched thence (Gen. Grover's Division,) i-la
Leesburg Turnpike and Snicker's Gap to Shenandoah
Valley; forded Shenandoah river just at dark and
effected junction with Gen'l Sheridan in the night
at Berryville. Fell back next day to Charlestown,
and fortified. Army retired to Halltown Pleights,
Grover's Division acting as rear guard, and following
in the night. Intrenched at Halltown.
(While at Charlestown, the 14th was detailed to
guard train to and from Harper's Ferry, then the
hunting ground of Mosby.)
Constant skirmishing at Halltown for several days,
till Early retired. Advanced to Berryville and forti-
fied. Heavy skirmishing for several days, till Early
retired.
Visit of Gen'l Grant, Sept. 17 and 18. At 2 a.m.,
Sept. 19, marched for Winchester and acted our part
there in battle of the 19th (Opequan). Severe loss,
including Lieuts. Jackman of I, and Godwin of H,
killed, and Capts. Hobbs of G, Worster of E, and
Gardner of I severely wounded and permanently
disabled.
Sept. 20, advanced to Fisher's Hill, and engaged in
operations there, ending in routing of Early's forces.
Engaged in close pursuit of Early to Mount Craw-
ford, above Harrisonburg. Retired to Harrisonburg
and encamped for some time. Retired to Cedar
Creek, where w^e encamped and intrenched.
Oct. 19, attacked by Early on our extreme left.
Our Division was under arms before the attack;
fighting was hot, but not well managed. Retreated
five miles. After Sheridan's arrival, re-formed lines
and moved to the attack, routed Early utterly, and re-
occupied our former position. Loss in the 14lh very
hea.vy, more than one-third, including killeil, wound-
ed and prisoners. Among the killed was Lt. Col.
Bickmore, who fell early in the day, Jamonted by
every man iji the Regiment.
6
Sept. 20, advanced to Strasburg; then fell back to
Cedar Creek; and in November retired to near Win-
chester and fortified Camp Russell, so-called. At
this place the Regiment was made part of a detached
Brigade and proceeded to Martinsburg, guarding a
supply train. Remained in the defences of Martins-
burg some days, then returned to Camp Russell.
At this place occurred the separation of the re-en-
listed and non re-enlisted men, the latter proceeding
as a Regiment, by order of Gen'l Sheridan, to
Harper's Ferry, where they turned over their arms,
and thence proceeded to Augusta, Me., where they
were finally mustered out. The re-enlisted men
were organized into four companies.
In early spring of '65, proceeded by rail to Balti-
more and embarked by Steamer for Savannah, Ga.,
where they were joined by six companies of recruits
and a fine band, and were re-organized as a full Regi-
ment.
From there marched to Augusta, Ga., and was
there at the time Jeff Davis arrived, a detail of the
Regiment, under command of Lt. Joseph W. Grant,
Co. A, guarding Davis from there to Fortress Mon-
roe. Marched from Augusta to Savannah. Pro-
ceeded by Steamer Resolute to Darien, Ga.
The Regiment returned to Maine in September,
1865, and was mustered out at Augusta, Me., Sept.
23 of that year.
In conclusion, it may belaid that tlie Regiment
was always at the front after it reached tlie Dept, of
the Gulf. Its history is marred by no blot whatever.
Its discipline, obedience and drill were always of the
best. In whatever command serving, it was known
to the commanding general as a regiment always to
be relied upon, and was often detailed for duty such
as only the most reliable troops could be entrusted
with. Its losses were heavy from many causes inci-
dent to the service, including severity of climate
and unfit food in the first year of its service. And
no regiment is better entitled to have its achieve-
ments embalmed in a volume which shall go down
to posterity as a portion of the history of the great
war in which it bore so honorable a part.

battle of Baton Rouge, Aug. 5, 1862, at which
the Regiment was thanked by Gen. Butler
for bravery ; two expeditions to Amite river,
the assaults on and siege of Port Hudson,
