who fell in the "forefront" at Port Hudson,
claiming him as a slave. (Till then, no one sus-
pected that he had a drop of negro blood in his

barked and joined Gen. Butler's forces, upon the
right bank of the James river. Engaged in expedi-
tion to Deep Bottom at time of mine explosion at

Leesburg Turnpike and Snicker's Gap to Shenandoah
Valley; forded Shenandoah river just at dark and
effected junction with Gen'l Sheridan in the night

at Berryville. Fell back next day to Charlestown,
and fortified. Army retired to Halltown Pleights,
Grover's Division acting as rear guard, and following
in the night. Intrenched at Halltown.

(While at Charlestown, the 14th was detailed to

fied. Heavy skirmishing for several days, till Early

Sept. 19, marched for Winchester and acted our part
there in battle of the 19th (Opequan). Severe loss,
including Lieuts. Jackman of I, and Godwin of H,
killed, and Capts. Hobbs of G, Worster of E, and
Gardner of I severely wounded and permanently
disabled.

Sept. 20, advanced to Fisher's Hill, and engaged in
operations there, ending in routing of Early's forces.
Engaged in close pursuit of Early to Mount Craw-
ford, above Harrisonburg. Retired to Harrisonburg
and encamped for some time. Retired to Cedar
Creek, where w^e encamped and intrenched.

Oct. 19, attacked by Early on our extreme left.
Our  Division  was  under  arms  before  the  attack;
fighting was hot, but not well managed. Retreated
five miles. After Sheridan's arrival, re-formed lines
and moved to the attack, routed Early utterly, and re-
occupied our former position. Loss in the 14lh very
hea.vy, more than one-third, including killeil, wound-
ed and prisoners. Among the killed was Lt. Col.
Bickmore, who fell early in the day, Jamonted by
every man iji the Regiment.

6

Sept. 20, advanced to Strasburg; then fell back to
Cedar Creek; and in November retired to near Win-
chester and fortified Camp Russell, so-called. At
this place the Regiment was made part of a detached
Brigade and proceeded to Martinsburg, guarding a
supply train. Remained in the defences of Martins-
burg some days, then returned to Camp Russell.
At this place occurred the separation of the re-en-
listed and non re-enlisted men, the latter proceeding
as a Regiment, by order of Gen'l Sheridan, to
Harper's Ferry, where they turned over their arms,
and thence proceeded to Augusta, Me., where they
were finally mustered out. The re-enlisted men
were organized into four companies.

In early spring of '65, proceeded by rail to Balti-
more and embarked by Steamer for Savannah, Ga.,
where they were joined by six companies of recruits
and a fine band, and were re-organized as a full Regi-
ment.

From there marched to Augusta, Ga., and was
there at the time Jeff Davis arrived, a detail of the
Regiment, under command of Lt. Joseph W. Grant,
Co. A, guarding Davis from there to Fortress Mon-
roe. Marched from Augusta to Savannah. Pro-
ceeded by Steamer Resolute to Darien, Ga.

The Regiment returned to Maine in September,
1865, and was mustered out at Augusta, Me., Sept.
23 of that year.

In conclusion, it may belaid that tlie Regiment
was always at the front after it reached tlie Dept, of
the Gulf. Its history is marred by no blot whatever.
Its discipline, obedience and drill were always of the
best. In whatever command serving, it was known
to the commanding general as a regiment always to

be relied upon, and was often detailed for duty such
as only the most reliable troops could be entrusted
with. Its losses were heavy from many causes inci-
dent to the service, including severity of climate
and unfit food in the first year of its service. And
no regiment is better entitled to have its achieve-
ments embalmed in a volume which shall go down
to posterity as a portion of the history of the great
war in which it bore so honorable a part.
