Subject: Early History of the Buffs
Subject: Early History of the Buffs
The book is very readable and fascinating if you are a student of military history. It goes back much further than other regimental histories because it dates from 1572 instead of the usual 1660s. The first 100 pages are a re-print of Richard Cannon's History of the regiment first published c1838. This again, is more readable than you would expect for a text that is almost 200 years old. The author of the rest of the book is actually Captain H R Knight, not C R B Knight as stated on this website. The latter author wrote volumes 2 and 4 which unfortunately do not appear on this website as far as I can tell. H R Knight gives a full historical background to the regimental history and there is much to learn about English as well as European history in this book. Unfortunately it finishes in 1704 at the Battle of Blenheim. I have written a short version of the book which can be read on the British Empire website: http://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/armyunits/britishinfantry/buffs.htm
