which  is  straight  (never  involute),  spreading, 
and  without  stride.  Stem  solid,  at  first  hard, 
then  softer  and  spongy.  Of  the  gills,  a  few 
reach  half-way  to  the  stem  ;  the  others  are 
divided,  rigid,  dilated  in  front,  and  extend  into
