DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Welcome to The Livingston Theatre Company’s first production of the 2016-2017 season,
Little Shop of Horrors. Firstly, it means the world to me that people would come out and
support this production. Theater has played a large role in my life for quite some time
now. I come from a small town, just down the road from where you’re sitting, called
Dunellen. I spent my entire life in that town before attending college at Rutgers. It was in
that little town where I discovered my love of theater. My parents have always taken me to
see musicals. Truthfully, I don’t really remember ever grasping my admiration for theater
until I was in fifth grade. I liked to perform for people, but never on a stage. A few jokes
here and there at a family Christmas party was probably the extent of my knowledge of
performing.
It was in the Spring of 2006 that I went to see Little Shop of Horrors at Dunellen High
School. That year my sister, Corin, was in the ensemble, so attendance was mandatory.
I had no idea what the show was about, nor can I remember my initial reaction when my
mom told me. I must’ve been excited though; the idea of a man-eating plant who sings
songs was something that would’ve interested 12 year old me. Sadly, I can hardly recount
any of the moments from the show. I can remember a friend of mine who was two years
younger than me running out of the theater crying during the Act I finale. What I can't
remember in details, though, I can make up for in actors. I can tell you that Mike Menta
played Seymour, and Jenna Sanders played Audrey, and Jon Velasco played Mushnik,
and Jason Cilento played Audrey II, and that Mike O’Donnell played Orin. Till this day,
these characters stick in my head so vividly. When I got home, all I did was listen to the
soundtrack. I was blown away. As any theater kid naturally does, they start to think, “Hmm
I wonder which role I could play?" I didn’t even entertain the idea of playing Audrey or
the Urchins at that time, and still don’t. I thought about Seymour, but my pudgy physique
didn’t quite fit the character archetype. Orin popped into my head for a moment, but I
was way too much of a nice guy to be a sadistic and abusive dentist. Audrey II quickly
left my hopes and dreams because I was not a bass (and am still not). This left me with
Mr. Mushnik. That's right, even 12 year old me knew how show business worked, and if I
were ever going to be involved with Little Shop of Horrors I would have to play Mushnik.
At some point or another I moved on from my Mushnik dream and started working on
other things. Little Shop of Horrors is what inspired me to be in 13 shows in my career at
Dunellen. It is what still drives my involvement in theater today. When I first got involved
with LTC it was backstage. I was asked to fill in a week before tech for their production
of The Drowsy Chaperone. Ten shows later, and here we are. Being backstage for the first
time gave me a taste of what it was like to not be one of the actors. I didn't love it, but I
realized that I was good at dealing with actors. After assistant directing two productions
in the following years. I soon realized that I wanted to direct. But what show? It had to be
something where I was familiar with all of the characters, and felt that I could convey to
the actors the circumstances of the show. Then it hit me. Little Shop of Horrors. I might
not be able to play Seymour, Orin, Audrey, the Urchins, or Audrey II, but I decided I could
push my Mushnik dream out of the way, and give my first try at directing. I really never
thought that directing would be for me, but hey, don’t it go to show ya never know? I’ve
never been so happy with a decision.
Tyler Conroy, Director
PRODUCER’S NOTE
Hello there, and welcome to
the first main stage production
of The Livingston Theatre
Company’s 19th season,
Little Shop of Horrors. We are
extremely excited to start off
our season with a show that so
many people know and love!
Though this year is just
beginning, we are already in full
swing. Outside of rehearsals,
we have already participated
in Homecoming Bed Races, Monster Mash and partnered with the Rutgers Gardens
for their Fall Fest. We are also very proud to announce that this is LTC’s second year in
participating in Rutgers University Dance Marathon, a university event with the goal of
providing emotional and financial support to children of Embrace Kids Foundation who
suffer from cancer, sickle cell anemia and other serious disorders.
As soon as Little Shop closes, rehearsals for American Idiot will begin. American Idiot
is a sung-through musical adaption of the band Green Day’s rock opera, and will run
from February 1 6th- 1 9th . We top off our season with the Rodgers & Hammerstein’s
classic musical Oklahoma! which will run from April 20th-23rd. Tickets for the rest of
our season’s main stages are now on sale; we hope to see you there!
We are more than grateful to continue to have the help, support, and guidance of Laura
Christiansen, Dr. Timothy Grimm, Jason Goldstein, Adam Tucker and past members the
2015- 2016 LTC Executive Board, Irene Martinez and Justin Luckenbaugh. Thank you
so much for helping LTC to continue to grow and thrive.
We hope you are ready for another year of vibrant student theatre at Rutgers, and we look
forward to seeing you at our productions to come this year! For now, it is time to sit back
and enjoy this production of Little Shop of Horrors!

semester, or to any of our open General Board meetings throughout the year.
PRODUCTIONS
The Livingston Theatre Company produces three musicals per year. Our productions
run for several performances over one weekend. Throughout our storied history,
productions have taken place in both the College Hall of the Livingston Student
Center (the new and old), as well as Crossroads Theater in the theater district of
downtown New Brunswick, New Jersey. We are dedicated to bringing both famous
and lesser known musicals to Rutgers.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP
The Livingston Theatre Company is completely run by undergraduate students are
Rutgers in New Brunswick from all schools. The head of the company is a 4 member
Executive Board, which is elected by the membership, and a General Board that
is chosen through applications and interviews. Anyone may apply, and selection
is based upon experience and enthusiasm. Production positions such as directors,
choreographers, musical directors, stage managers, and designers and technicians
are also filled for specific shows via application and interviews. Anyone interested
in becoming a part of the company, in any position, should check out the Getting
Involved links at the top of the page for more information.
LTC ALUMNI
After a storied history, the LTC has established a strong base of alumni who continue
their support to the organization. We always love having our alumni back, and enjoy
a strong support system from them as well.
