DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
It is said that you need three things in
the theater - the play, the actors and the
audience - and each must give
something.
First I will discuss the play. Once Upon
Mattress is a piece that has interested
me for years. This light, fun, exciting,
and fulfilling piece was offered to me to
direct and I couldn't resist. From the
funny jokes, the kooky characters, to the
music . . .Mattress has proved itself
worthy to me, now it was my job to the
creators to make their piece worthy of
being produced by the Livingston
Theatre Company.
We were already on our way to success when the ever-so-talented production
staff joined the team. Sarah Croce (Choreography), Jamie Bunce (Musical
Direction), Marisa Cucuzza (Co-Direction) and myself joined together to
make the play come to life in what we described as a “storybook cartoon.”
The next thing that is needed in theatre is the actors. Auditions and callbacks
were held and we were blessed with a cast whose non-stop perseverance,
dedication and talent to this production are what really started to build on the
success of the show. Countless hours of rehearsal resulted in a cast who is
close-knit and inseparable and whose continuous work has really paid off.
Now, the play and the actors were in place. It was time to put every last bit
of effort into each rehearsal and allow our “storybook cartoon” vision to
come to life.
The blood, sweat and tears of this production team, cast and crew were shed
in order for the final thing that is needed in theatre - you, the audience to join
us as we share with you our “storybook cartoon.” Each and every one of us
have gave something tonight for this wonderful production of . . .Mattress so
sit back and enjoy.
Sincerely,
Russell Pinto, Jr.
PRODUCERS’ MESSAGE
Welcome theatergoers! We are thrilled to be continuing our season
after last semester's considerable successes of A Funny Thing
Happened. . . and A. Chorus Fine, with Once Upon A Mattress. We
know that you will enjoy this, our third production of the year, just
as much as the others.
In less than five weeks, the cast of Mattress has taken a mere script
and turned it into the perfect blend of fairytale and farce. They
have brought to life this musical adaptation of The Princess and
the Pea which presents a story with a mix of authenticity and
originality. The musical is told through the music of Mary
Rodgers, the Lyrics of Marshall Barer, and the book by Jay
Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller. When it opened at
the Phoenix Theatre in May 1959 it marked the stage debut of
Carol Burnett in the role of Winnifred the Woebegone. The play
was nominated for several Tony Awards, including Best Leading
Actress (Carol Burnett,), Best Musical, and Best Musical Revival.
We would also like to thank the staff, crew, cast and pit for
providing their talents in creating our own storybook casde here
within the student center. We are extremely grateful for their time
and dedication in contributing to the feel of this show by helping
us to carry out our vision. We hope you enjoy learning about the
“true” story of the Princess and the Pea as told by our performers.
We look forward to seeing you again at Camelot in April!
Sincerely,
Timothy DiVito
