Gently  rolling  land 

Mixed  hardwood  and  softwood  stands  20  -  60 

feet  in  height. 

Shale  brook  forms  the  western  boundary,  and 

there  is  a  25  acre  beaver  pond. 

Grouse,  waterfowl,  raccoon,  whitetailed  deer, 

snowshoe  hare,  gray  squirrel,  beaver.

CHALET  WILDLIFE  MANAGEMENT  AREA 

Location:         Dal ton,  Windsor 

Size;  723  Acres 

Topography;        Hilly  north-south  facing  hills. 

Elevation,  1600  -  2200  feet. 

The  old  Appalachian  Trail  forms  the 

Western  boundary  of  the  area. 
Vegetation:        Almots  exclusively  mature  hardwoods. 
Water:  A  small  stream  cuts  through  part  of  area, 

Noted  Wildlife:    Grouse,  snowshoe  hare,  whitetailed  deer, 

gray  squirrel. 


HIRAM  H.  POX  WILDLIFE  MANAGEMENT  AREA 
(Canada  Hill) 

Location;  Chester,  Chesterfield,  Huntington,  Worthington 

Size:  2022  Acres 

Topography:        Rolling  hills,  some  steep  Ledges  and  gullies. 

Elevations  700  -  1200  feet. 
Vegetation:        Predominantly  40  -  60  feet,  mixed  hardwood  and 

softwood  stands. 
Water:  Meadow  Brook  and  Little  River  divide  the 

area  in  a  north  -  south  direction. 
Noted  Wildlife:    Whitetailed  deer,  grouse,  raccoon,  snowshoe 

hare,  gray  squirrel.

HINSDALE  PLATS  WILDLIFE  MANAGEMENT  AREA 


Location:         Hinsdale 

Size;  9A-6  Acres 

Topography;        River  valley  land  rising  to  the  east  to 

become  rolling  hills. 
Elevation,  1/+20  -  1/+70  feet. 

Vegetation;        Seasonally  flooded  grassy  and  shrub  bottom- 
land. The  upland  area  has  some  abandoned 
fields  but  is  mostly  20  -  60  feet  mixed 
softwood  -  hardwood  stands. 

Water;  The  East  Branch  Housatonic  River,  Bilodeau 

Brook  and  Bennett  Brook  bisect  the  area.   The 
Housatonic  and  Bennett  Brook  provide  trout 
fishing.   There  is  also  a  small  artificial  pond. 

Noted  Wildlife;    Stocked  pheasant,  woodcock,  grouse,  waterfowl, 

raccoon,  snowshoe  hare,  beaver,  otter,  mink.

Lenox,  Lee,  Pittsfield 
661.7  Acres 

Flat  river  plain,  gently  rolling  in  the  west 
and  rising  abruptly  to  the  east. 
Abandoned  fields  are  being  invaded  by  brushy 
species  and  small  hardwood  -  softwood  lots. 
Approximately  1/3  of  the  area  is  in  wetland. 
The  Housatonic  River  bisects  the  area  with 
many  backwaters.  These  and  Woods  Pond  com- 
prise the  majority  of  the  wetland.   Several 
small  brooks  flow  into  the  Housatonic. 
Stocked  pheasant,  woodcock,  cottontail  rabbit, 
raccoon,  waterfowl,  ruffed  grouse,  muskrat,  gray 
squirrel.

(CHESTER) 


KELLY  WILDLIFE  MANAGEMENT  AREA 


Location;         Chester 

Size;  267  Acres 

Topography:       Located  on  the  slope  of  Round  Top  Hill,  the 

area  is  bordered  partly  on  the  southeast  by 
Round  Hill  Road  and  on  the  northwest  by  Walker 
Brook.  Hillsides  are  steep  with  elevations  of 

650»-1572T • 
Vegetation:       Thickly  wooded  with  mixed  hardwoods. 
Water:  Blair  Brook,  which  transects  the  southwestern 

corner  of  the  area,  flows  seasonally. 
Noted  Wildlife:   Whitetailed  deer,  gray  squirrel,  raccoon.

Huntington 

296.4  Acres 

A  dry  bed  reservoir  on  the  Westfield  River 

with  land  rising  abruptly  from  the  flood 

plain. 

Grassy  and  brushy  land  in  a  seasonally  flooded 

plain.  Portions  of  the  land  above  the  flood 

plain  are  mature  hardwoods  and  softwoods. 

The  Westfield  River  provides  fine  trout  fishing. 


Noted  Wildlife:   Stocked  pheasant,  woodcock,  grouse,  cottontail 

rabbit,  gray  squirrel,  raccoon. 


EUGENE  D.  MORAN  WILDLIFE  MANAGEMENT  AREA

1022  Acres 

Mostly  flat,  gently  rising  hills  in 

southern  portion. 

Elevation,  1900  -  2l60  feet. 

Largely  open  fields  and  fresh  meadow. 

The  wooded  sections  are  mixed  hardwoods  and 

softwoods,  and  there  is  one  true  softwood 

stand. 

Windsor  Brook,  shallow  marsh,  one  beaver  pond. 

Stocked  pheasant,  grouse,  woodcock,  snowshoe  hare, 

whitetailed  deer,  raccoon,  cottontail,  beaver, 

otter  some  waterfowl  early  fall. 


PERU  WILDLIFE  MANAGEMENT  AREA

Peru 

2638  Acres 

Rolling  hills,  several  steep  hills  and  gullies. 

Almost  totally  wooded.  Hardwoods  and  softwoods 

in  different  stages  of  maturity.  A  majority  of 

the  woodland  is  20  -  60  feet  in  height. 

Trout  brook  provides  trout  fishing,  and  there 

is  some  shallow  shrub  swampland. 

Grouse,  woodcock,  gray  squirrel,  snowshoe  hare, 

whitetailed  deer,  raccoon,  beaver. 


SAVOY  WILDLIFE  MANAGEMENT  AREA 

Location:         Savoy 

Size:  A20  Acres 

Topography:       Mostly  gentle  grades,  but  there  are 

several  steep  hills.   Highest  elevation; 

2156  feet. 
Vegetation:       Woodland,  mature  hardwoods  and  conifers, 

wooded  swamps. 
Water:  Two  smaLl  streams  and  a  wooded  swamp. 

Noted  Wildlife:   Grouse,  snowshoe  hare,  whit et ailed  deer. 


STAFFORD  HILL  WILDLIFE  MANAGEMENT  AREA 

Location :         Ch e  sh ire 

3i/,e:  675  Acres 

Topography:       Hilly,  with  come  deep  areas.   Elevation 

950  -  LoOO  feet.   There  is  a  flat  plain  along 

Hoosio  River,  and  there  are  two  relatively 

flat,  plateaus. 
Vegetal- ion;       Old  farm  pasture,  with  invading  woody  growth. 

A  shrub  swamp  along  the  river  bottom.   Some 

small  woodlois. 
Water:  The  Hoosic  River  forms  the  western  boundary, 

and  there  are  two  seasonally  running  brooks,  in 

a-ddition  there  is  a  .25  acre  wet  meadow,  and  a 

. 10  acre  pond. 
Noted  Wildlife:   Stocked  pheasant,  woodcock,  cottontail  rabbit, 

waterfowl.
