This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project

to make the world's books discoverable online.

It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject

to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books

are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.

Marks, notations and other maiginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the

publisher to a library and finally to you.

because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other
countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of
any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner

INTRODUCTORY NOTICE.

inrrHEN Mr Feltham published his "Tour through the
Island of Mann^ in 1798/^ he contemplated in the
^'Parochial Tour*^ to insert a record of all the monumental
Inscriptions then to be found in the Churches and Churchyards
in the Island^ and at page 226 of the Manx Society^s reprint of
his work, vol. vi, he remarks '' that in going to the respective
parishes, I took down every inscription in every churchyard
except one, (Kirh Braddariy) but they occupy such a space that
I am deterred from printing them in this volume, yet hope to
present them at a future period, as a treasure to the inhabitants,
in some detached and cheap form/' The original manuscript in
which these inscriptions are recorded is in the possession of
Paul Bridson, Esq., of Douglas, one of the hon. secretaries of the
Society, the Council of which, considering they were not incor*
porated in the Bev. Mr. Airey's Reprint of the '^ Tour," think
they will form an acceptable addenda to that work, particularly
as Mr Feltham's intention of printing them in a cheap form has
never been carried out. The manuscript has accordingly been
placed in the present Editor's hands to superintend its passing

X INTRODUCTOUY NOTICE.

through the press, and in order to render it a more complete
record of " the frail memorial of the dead," up to that period,
the inscriptions which were printed in the '* Tour" have been
again given in the present volume.

It is not the intention, of the Editor to trace the History of
Monumental Inscriptions from the earliest period; numerous
examples are to be found scattered throughout the Island of
Bunic inscriptions from the ninth to the thirteenth century,
which have been depicted in the works of Kinnebrook and
Gumming, or of those still earlier records which have yet to be
deciphered in the Cup memorials discovered in various parts of
the Isle of Man during the visit of the Cambrian Society in the
autumn of 1865.

The Greeks and Eomans have given us numerous examples of
the Epitaphs of their day; to Camden we turn for the earlier
records of this kind in Great Britain, and which have been ably
followed up by Weaver, who wrote in the time of Charles I. his
'' Ancient Funeral Monuments within the United Monarchie of
Great Britaine, Ireland, &c. ;" by the " Monumenta Anglicana"
of John Le Neve, in 5 vols., 1719, and in GougVs '' Sepulchral
Monuments in Great Britain," 3 vols., 1796, A work of the
same kind relating to Scotland is to be found in Monteith's
collection of " An Theater of Mortality," published in Edinburgh,
1704 and 1713, and now become very scarce. Attempts have
been made to induce the Society of Antiquaries to take up this
department of History by lending their aid in making a collec-
tion of Monumental and other Inscriptions worthy of the
country, but without any result. Various collections of Epitaphs

INTRODUCTORY NOTICE. XI

have from time to time appeared, one of the latest, which enters
most fully into the subject, giving numerous examples, preceded
by an Essay, is entitled " Chronicles of the Tombs," by Thos,
Jos. Pettigrew, P.S.A., 1857, whose observations on the import-
ance of Monumental Inscriptions in the elucidation of local
history are so much in accordance with the objects of the Manx
Socieiy that the Editor submits the following extract : —

''The importance of monuments and inscriptions in the illus-
tration of local history cannot be too strongly maintained ; but
for these, how many persons and events worthy of remembrance
would have remained unknown, and how many testimonials of
affectionate regard and filial gratitude neglected? Nam multos
veterum, velut inglorios et ignobiles, oblivio obruet. By epi-
taphial records the antiquary, the historian, and the biographer
obtain legitimate sources of inquiry, and are enabled to do
justice to the memory of many deserving individuals, whose
laudable conduct and advancement of public and private
benefit might otherwise be forgotten. Again, how frequent has
been the complaint of writers of the illegible, ill-preserved, or
altogether annihilated inscriptions upon monumental tombs, the
possession of which might have served to solve a doubt or dispel
a mystery. Yet no fixed method has hitherto been adopted to
secure so desirable a result. Much benefit, I am disposed to
believe, would arise from the establishment of a Public Begister
of Inscriptions. They ought not to be left to the chance of
lasting record by the hands of the local historian or topographer.
Many circumstances have contributed to render our literature in
this department defective. Our Church books contain no records

XU INTRODUCTOEY NOTICE.

of this description, and the political, civil, and religious disturb-
ances with which this kingdom has been in various times affected
have tended to the destruction and removal of a very large
portion of the most interesting monuments of this description.
The suppression of the monasteries and the subsequent icono-
clastic rage of the Puritans also greatly contributed to the
removal of monumental tombs, brasses, and inscriptions, con-
taining the memorials of those who had distinguished themselves
in the page of history, subjects for the pen of the historian and
panegyrist, and giving employment to the artizans of their time.
The great neglect of monuments, when disturbed or removed by
the general repair of churches, is exceedingly to be lamented.
No register is to be found of innumerable examples which are
knovm to have been formerly in the churches of this country.
No traces whatever of many of them are now to be found.^'

After the lapse of seventy years since Mr Feltham caused a
copy of these records of the tombs to be taken, it is to be
expected that some of them from various causes have disappeared,
and more particularly when we take into account many of the
churches have during the time either been rebuilt or restored,—
that fertile source of destruction of this kind. It is, however,
greatly to the credit of the Manx people that they have ever
shown great reverence for the remains of the dead, as witness
the numerous ruins of Treen chapels, erected ages ago, and
around which many of their progenitors repose ; these, although
in many instances situated in the midst of cultivated lands,
remain for the most part undisturbed to the present day. Yew
trees, as Mr Feltham remarks in his "Tour,*' which ai'e so

INTRODUCTORY NOTICE. XIU

geuerally found in the churchyards in England^ are not to be

found in those of Man ; neither is it the custom^ as in Wales^ to

decorate the grave with flowers, probably because the Manxman

enjoys more of connubial bliss than is recorded in a Welsh

epitaph : —

" This spot is the sweetest Fve seen in my life.
Fop it raises my flowers and covers my wife." ^

There are few monuments in the Isle of Man with any pre-
tension to artistic taste. The inscriptions recorded by Mr
Feltham are in many instances only a bare memorial of name,
date, and age, yet these alone will be found useful to the future
historian in recording the genealogy of families, as well as a
record of the patronymics of the country. Mr Feltham, during
his stay in the Island, resided in Bamsey, and commenced his
work in the parish of Maughold proceeding on his way south-
ward ; it haa been thought desirable to commence in the regular
order in which the various parishes stand on the records. The
inscriptions appear to. be taken in the order as they lie in the
graveyard, by which the names of the various families are in
many instances brought in close proximity. The usual custom
of adding the wife^s surname tends materially to connect links
by which many Manx families are united.

It will be observed that surnames are found to abound in some
parishes to their almost exclusion in others, and this it may be
said continues in a great degree to the present day. There is
one peculiar feature to be noticed in these inscriptions, that out
of 2,000 names 4ihat are here recorded not twenty bear a double
Christian name, adhering as Islanders generally do to their own
peculiar customs. At the present time, owing to the greater

intercourse and connexion with English families, the fashionable

«

mode of having a double name is becoming more prevalent, and
we meet with John Thomas and Mary Jane at every turn.
The oldest dates recorded in the several parishes are as follow :

On the whole it may be said that this forms the most com-
plete record of the dead that is to be met with, and may in point
of fact be styled unique, as it gives a copy of every atone up to
that date, 1797, with the exception as before mentioned, and
as. such it is submitted to the members of the Manx Society.

WILLIAM HARBISON.

Eock Mount, 1867.

INmODUCTORY NOTICE, XV

Since writing the foregoing, Dr Oliver, one of the honorary-
secretaries of the Manx Society, has obligingly taken a copy of
the inscriptions in Kirk Braddan Churchyard to the end of la^t
century, which are given in the Supplement to this volume,
thereby rendering the inscriptions for the whole Island complete
to that period.

It has been found on examination that numerous records
mentioned in the present volume are no longer to be met with,
thereby confirming in so short a space of time, the observation
of Mr Pettigrew, that " no traces whatever of many of them are
now to be found/'

It has been thought desirable to give views of the old
Churches taken from drawings made in the time of Bishop
Wilson; these have been obligingly etched by Miss Oliver
expressly for »this work, and printed by Mr G. A. Dean, of
Douglas, thereby forming an appropriate illustration to the
volume as well as a record of the primitive nature of the archi-
tecture of Manx Churches.

*' Where's now my frenzy's pompous fomiture ?

The torf-bnilt cottage, with its ragged wall

Of mouldering mud, is royalty to me !

The spider's most attenuated thread

Is cord, is cable, to man's tender tie

On earthly bliss j^it breaks at erery breeze."

There is only one inscription in the Chancel of the Church, to
Mrs. Christian Norris and her five children, 6th of July, 1695.

Without the Chancel end, in the churchyard, on a plain tomb,
railed in with iron. — ^' Sleeping in Jesus.'' Here lieth the body
of Thomas Wilson, D.D., Lord Bishop of this Isle ; who died
March 7th, 1755, aged 93, in the 58th year of his consecration.
This monument was executed by his son, Thomas Wilson, D.D.,
a native of this parish, who in obedience to the express com-
mands of his worthy father, declines giving him the ch^U'acter
he so justly deserved. Let this Island speak the rest.

On a plain flat tomb stone, railed in. — ^Elizabeth Hyldesley,

BALLAUGH.

" What can preserve my life, or what destroy ?
An angel's arm can't snatch me from the grave';
Legions of angels can't confine me there."

On a flat tomb. — January 19th, 1771, aged 73, died the Rev.
Matthias Curphey, Vicar- General, and rector of this parish. An
humble, meek, pacific man. Sound divine, learned, and exem-
plary ; with the Rev. P. Moore, associate revisor of the Manks
Scriptures; translated by the Clergy of this Isle — a great,
arduous, original work.

On a flat tomb.

Translated hence, the good man never dies.
But, like the day star, only sets to rise.

The Rev. James "Wilks, rector of this parish, aged 58 years,
was buried June 21st, 1777.

To him to live was Christ, to die was gain;

The sting of death sweet consolation brings :

Hope, anchor of the soul, allays his pain ;

He meets his God, with healing in his wings.

Jlre long when Sovereign wisdom wills.
My soul an unknown path shall tread.
And strangely leave, who strangely fills
The frame, and waft me to the dead :
Oh ! what is death ? 'tis Mfe's last shore.
Whose vanities are vain no more :
Whose all pursuits their goal ohtain
And life is all re-touched again.
When in their bright result shall rise
Thoughts, virtues, friendships, griefs, and joys;

of Ramsey, buried April 17th, 1756, aged 20

Leaving behind her an only son, then an infant, by whom

this monument is now erected, not from an impulse of vanity,

but of that affection which he bears to the memory of a parent

to whom he was prevented shewing any other mark of duty.

While lettered marble would in vain impart

The warm emotions of a feeling heart,

Fond contemplation oft approaches here.

To pay the tribute of a silent tear.

Whose health, whose ease, whose comfort was her care.

Whose inclinations ere his lips had uttered them.

She caught even from his eye, and regarded as a Law;

Tho' called away in the prime of life from the fairest prospects
of human felicity ; from the delighted hopes of most indulgent
parents ; from the tender affection of a loving husband ; from
the early promise of an only son, and from an affluent fortune ;
yet did she not repine. Innocence, virtue, and unaffected
sanctity, enabled her to meet the awful summons with devout
resignation. The esteem and admiration of the wise and good;
the dearest love of those that knew her best; the agonising

KIEK HALEW. 85

sorrows of disconsolate friends^ pleaded in vain for her longer
stay; yet was not her death untimely. Slessed with wisdom
above her sex, and virtue beyond her years, her task she soon
finished. A specimen was all that was required, and now with
the dead, that die in the Lord, she resteth from her labours, and
her works do follow her.

Learn hence, ye rich, unthinking, young and gay.
Duly to prize the morning of your day ;
Dark clouds may intercept your noontide sun.
Or night overtake you, ere your work be done.

Knowest thou, O man ! who passest by this spot,
That rest from labour is the just man's lot;
His body buried here lies mixt with earth.
His soul, set free, enjoys a second birth ;
And, disencumbered from its clay, flies light.
Springs thro* the air beyond the realms of night.
Wrapt up in pleasing hope, it mounts on high.
To meet its Lord.... Let sinners fear to die.

SUPPLEMENT — KIRK BRADDAN. 131

Attached social esteem and confidence had enahled them to
raise a large family, which they formed to goodness by their
example of uniform unaffected piety, and a steady and successful
industry. This worthy pair in an humble, but enviable obscu-
rity, lived together 24 years, as husband and wife, as real and
sincere friends ; while that connection lasted, they were animated
by one soul, one spirit, one common principle of integrity, and
piety ; now they occupy one tomb, waiting the call and appro-
bation of their God.

Man, and by his manuscripts, which I have seen, gave posterity the clearest and most
bbrrect account of it."

THE NINTH REPORT

07 THB

COUNCIL OF THE MANX SOCIETY,

J?OR THE YEAR ENDING MAY 1, 1867.

DuBiHO the past Year the progress made in piintiQg tlje Works mentioned in tha
Iteport of last year, has not been so great as the Council anticipated. This delay, however
will be found to be fully compensated by the increased care which the Editors of thQ
works now sabmitte^l to the Members, have be0n imabled to devote to then)*

The first forming the 12th Volume of the Society's Publications is entitled *'An
Abstract of the Laws, Customs, an4 Ordinances of the Isle of Man* con)pi)ed by John
Parr, Esq.; formerly one of the Deemsters of the Island, with Notes }>y James Gell, Esq.,
I^er Majesty's Attorney-General for the Isle of ^an* Tl^is Volume consists chiefly of
preliminary xniitter which the Editor considered a necessary if^troductiop to tlxe body of
his work, and which required additional c^re in its production for the due interpretation
thereof. Tbe Second Ypluipe, epabracing an Abstract of the Laws with explanatory
e;(tracts is in a forward state, and is expected to be ready during the present ^ear.

The peeped wor|j formipg the 13th yol^mo of t^h^ Mivn? Sprigs is "The Man?
Dictionary in two parts. First, Manx and English, as prepared by Dr l^elly, apd th^
secopd, English and Man$, enticed " An English and Manx I^ctionar^, prepared fnjm
Dr Kelly's Triglott Dictionary, with alterations and additions from thp Dictionaries of
Archibald Cregeen, and John Ivon Mosley, by the Rev William Gill, Vicar of Malew,
pnd tho Rev J. Thos, Clarke, late chaplain of St Mark's. In presenting the Members
with this work, the Council have to congratulate the learned Editors upon their arduous
^uties being ^t length bronp;ht to a close, and are convinced the Members of the Manx

14 ilEPOUT,

Society will fally appreciate the great labour they have bestowed in bringing this, it may
be called " National Work" before them. It is the first instance w6 have of an English
and Manx Dictionary, and it is impossible to conclade the notice of this volume without
returning the thanks of the Council and of the Members of the Manx Society to the
Editors for the very careful and jodidous mauner in which they have performed their
responsible duties*

The Council considered it advisable to have the two volumes of this work bound in one
for facility of reference, but to be reckoned as t\70 yolum^s, which they trust will meet
with the approval of the Members,

The works in progress are the various papers relating to the Isle of Man, which have
been published in the Cambrian Archaeological Journal have been brought to a close, are
pow in the hands of the Editors, the Rev K. L. Barnwell, the Rev J. Qeo. Cumming and
Pr Oliver, who will supply additional papers accompanied with numerous iUastrations,
The volume i9 eii^pepted |;o be ready during the present year.

The Journals of the House of Keys which have so liberally been accorded by that
honourable body to the Manx Society for publication, have now been copied, and the
selection of papers which the Committee have made, placed in the hands of J. M,
Jeffcott, Esq.^ High Bailiff of Castletown, who has consented to edit the same, with such
notes as may appear necessary. This valuable record of Manx affairs will now be put to
press with as little dela^^ as possible, and a yoluqoe it is hoped will be ready before the
plose of the yeaf.

Thp Council regret to state that no further information has been received respecting the
missiug M.S.S. of the late James Burman, Esq., relative to William Christian, otherwise
f niiam Dhone;" although every search has been instituted for that purpose. Abstracts
of the trial, however, are now being made by Mr John F. Gill, and the work will come
out under the joint editorship of that gentleman and the Attorney* General, accompanied
ynth documents illustrative of the time of Lord Fairfax's residence here ; so that we may
now hopp to pee tl^is long ppniised acpount of J&ax^ History fo^ the ^rst time ma4e
public

The Manuscript mentioned in Feltham's Tour, 1798, oontaining the " Mouumental
Inscriptions from the Churches and Churchyards in the several Parishes of the Isle of
^an," has been placed in the hands of William Harrison, Esq., under whose editorial carp
yre may shortly e^jpept it to appear accompauied with an introductory notice.

A Volume is also in preparation consisting of Miscellaneous Papers that may in any
planner illustrate the early history or statistics of the Island. Members or others, who
may have such documents in their possession, by kindly placing thein at the disposal qf
the Council wi}l confer a favour ijpon the Society, and may rely upon every care being
taken of themt

The financial statement of the Treasurer appended hereto, v^ill shew a satisfactory state
pf the funds of this Society.

|lead and adopted at the ai^nual general meeting.

PENRY B. LOCH, President,
