The   earliest  known   was   Eadnoth,   an   Anglo   Thane   of    Somersetshire,    1050. 
Killed  1068.     His  son  was  Harding  de  Meriet  and  there  is  a  full  pedigree  of  his 
descendants  down  to  1418,  when  the  last  one,  Thomas  Meriet,  of  Stanlinch,  Wilts, 
disappeared.     (Somerset  Arch,  Society  Proceedings  for  1882.)

Denham,  Timothy  Knapp  and  Jonathan  Vowles  (now  in  possession  of  his  father 
Thomas,  and  given  to  Ephraim  by  an  instrument  in  writing),  to  become  the 
property  of  Thomas,  his  brother,  after  the  death  of  their  father,  26  Oct.,  1718; 
recorded  13  Jan.,  1719,  (White  Plains,  book  E.,  p.  186).  Bought  land  near  the 
drift  way  from  Stephen  Stockham,  20  Feb.,  1721.  Van  Horn  and  Roosevelt  sued

burgh  about  1747.  He  and  Francis  Purdy  bought  1200  acres  near  Newburgh 
from  William  Campbell  for  $750,  28  March,  1750.  Sold  I7>^  acres  at  White 
Plains  to  Caleb  Hyatt  for  £240,  27  April,  1750.  Made  his  will  5  Jan.,  1759;  proved 
23  March,  1759.  Gave  to  his  wife  £25  and  maintenance;  to  son  Caleb,  83  acres 
on  north  side  of  homestead,  and.all  lands  at  White  Plains  inherited  from  grand- 
father Humphrey  Underbill;  to  son  Humphrey,  100  on  west  end  of  homestead;

settled  at  Rye,  N.  Y.,  1673.  Witness  to  deed  to  Thomas  Statham,  24  Jan., 
1676.  One  of  the  purchasers  of  Hog-pen  Ridge,  4  Sept.,  1680.  Bought  land 
adjoining  John  Merritt's  from  Jonathan  Vowles,  22  Nov.,  1682.  On  list  of 
Rye  proprietors,  1683.  Constable  12  July,  1684.  Witness  to  deed  from  Isaac 
Sherwood  to  Caleb  Hyatt,  15  Sept.,  1684.  Appraiser  of  will  of  Caleb  Hyatt,

^NEHEMIAH,^  son  of  'Joseph,'^  born  1715,  died  1794. 

married  Dinah,  daughter  of  Ichabod  Hopkins  and  Sarah  Coles;  married  sec- 
ond, Mary,  daughter  of   Robert  D'ingy  before   1761.     He  showed  a  certificate 
of  removal  from  the  Mamaroneck  Meeting  at  the  Oblong  Meeting  at  Quaker 
Hill,  Dutchess  County,  December,   1758.     On  a  committee  to  review  the  suf- 
ferings of  the  Friends  at  Oblong,  1760.     He  and  nine  others  sign  a  petition 
in   behalf   of   themselves   and   fifteen  others   for  25000  acres   on   east   side  of 
Hudson  River  between  Fort  Edward  and  Lake  George,  25  July,  1761.     (Fort 
Ann,   Washington   Co.,  and  Queensbury,   Warren   Co.)      The  Queensbury  pat- 
ent, 23000  acres,  was  granted   to  twenty-three  persons,  not  including  him,  20 
May,    1762.     A   meeting  of   the   proprietors   of   Queensbury   was   held   at   the 
shop  of  Nehemiah    and   Daniel   Merritt   in   Beekman   Precinct,    Dutchess    Co., 
10  July,  1762.     A  second  meeting  was  held  at  the  same  place  when  partition 
deeds  were  given  to  the  thirty  proprietors,  including  Nehemiah  and  his  sons 
Daniel  and  Ichabod,  8  Nov.,   1762.     He  received  plot  2,2  in  division  103  and 
69,  and  half  of  plots  38  and  39,   13  Jan.,  1763.     One  of  the  trustees  to  rent 
out    all    undivided    lands,    23    Feb.,    1763.      Nehemiah    Merritt    of    Beekman's 
Precinct,    gentleman,    released    his   half    of    the    saw-mill,    house    and    utensils, 
built  by  them  at  Qeensbury,  to  Abraham   Wing   for  5   shillings,  7  Oct.,   1765. 
Walter  Franklin  of  New   York,  merchant,  leased  to  Nehemiah   Merritt,  yeo- 
man, of  the  Oblong,  Lot  32  of  500  acres  in  the  Oblong,   for  5  shillings  for 
one  year,  21  Dec,  1768,  and  sold  him  the  same  for   £1400,  22  Dec,  1768.    He 
was  agent  for  Franklin  and  signed  a  lease  in  his  behalf  to  Elisha  Smith  of 
Lot  70,   rental    £14,    i    May,    1774.     He  and   wife    Mary,   granted   to   his   son 
Daniel,   one-third  of   Lot  32,   supposed   to   contain    167   acres,   4   March,    1774; 
acknowledged  2  Oct.,   1793;   recorded   17  Jan.,   1794.     On  a  committee  to  visit 
Quaker  slaveholders,   14  Aug.,   1776.     Had  an  attack  of  numb  palsy,  25  June, 
1786.     Gave   deeds   of   one-half   of   Lot    103,   on    north    side   of   town   plot   at 
Queensbury  to  his   grandson   Benjamin,   and  one-half   to   his   grandson   Jacob, 
10  and   18  Sept.,   1792.     Granted   to  his   son   Daniel,  one-half  of  Lots  2>2>,   39 
and  76  of  125  acres  each  at  Queensbury,  21   Sept.,   1792.     Conveyed  to  Daniel 
the  remainder  of  Lot  32,  being  Zii  acres  in  the  Oblong,  for   £1250,  4  April, 
1793;   recorded  20  Jan.,    1794.      This   was   given   in   consideration   of   the  pay- 
ment of  all  Nehemiah's  debts,  25   May,   1790;   recorded  25  March,  1805.

at  Quaker  Hill,  N.  Y.  She  was  born  22  Feb.,  1743;  died  19  Mar.,  1819,  at 
Troy.  He  was  of  Beekman  and  had  a  deed  from  John  Page  of  part  of  the 
Page  Grant  between  Fort  Edward  and  Lake  George  (Queensbury),  25  Tune, 
1762.  Gave  deed  of  lots  at  Queensbury  to  his  brother  Daniel,  13  Jan.,  1763. 
Had  deed  from  Aliraham  Wing  of  Lot  No.  i,  to  acres,  at  Queensbury,  16  Mar., 
1767.  Requested  to  come  under  care  of  Nine  Partners  Meeting,  1776.  Had 
deed  from  Edward  Palmer  of  part  of  Lot  25  in  Nine  Partners,  125  acres, 
for  £1400,  21  Mar.,  1781.  Had  deed  from  J.  Allen  of  40  acres  at  Millbrook 
for    £200,    1786.     Appointed   on   committee   to   raise   funds    for    White   Creek 


Meeting  House,  1786.  He  writes  from  Nine  Partners  to  his  father  and 
mother,  19  May,  1786,  that  he  will  give  the  five  acres  of  land  desired  for  a 
meeting  house  lot.  Mortgaged  land  to  the  loan  officers  of  the  county  for 
$60,  22  Aug.,  1786.  Paid  interest  on  3  July,  1787.  Interest  after  that  date 
paid  by  Thomas  Poole.  Had  deed  from  Nathaniel  Piatt  of  53  acres  at  Mill- 
brook  for  £30,  22  May,  1789.  Nehemiah  Merritt,  Jr.,  merchant,  of  Wash- 
ington Township,  sold  to  Consider  Merritt  about  53  acres  in  Great  Nine 
Partners  for  £300,  8  Oct.,  1790;  acknowledged  by  witness,  \^  May,  1794; 
recorded  9  July,  1796,  Poughkeepsie,  lib.  14,  p.  206.  (This  land  is  at  Mill- 
brook,  now  owned  by  Stephen  H.  Merritt.)  From  Nine  Partners  Meeting 
to  Saratoga  Meeting,  26  Mar.,  1793;  acknowledged  at  Saratoga,  May,  1793. 
"Phebe  Merritt,  wife  of  Nehemiah,  having  removed  with  her  husband  and 
family  to  Queensbury  within  your  meeting  requests  a  certificate  for  herself 
and  daughters  Mary  and  Ruth."  Ditto  11  Sept.,  1793;  acknowledged  Jan., 
1794.  "Benjamin  Merritt,  son  of  Nehemiah,  a  youth  and  member  of  this 
meeting,  having  removed  with  his  father  to  your  parts,  etc."  Saratoga  Meet- 
ing to  Nine  Partners  Meeting,  16  May,  1794.  "Certificate  of  removal  is 
granted  Phebe  Merritt  and  her  daughters  Mary  and  Ruth."  It  is  said  that 
Nehemiah  and  his  wife  died  of  bilious  colic.

He  was  born  at  Quaker  Hill.  Married  at  Kingsbury,  Washington  Co.,  3 
Oct.,  1800,  Thankful,  daughter  of  Matthew  Scott  and  Mercy  Ashley.  She 
was  born  at  Spencertown,  Columbia  Co.,  21  May,  1780,  died  at  Troy,  22 
May,  1845.  He  had  a  deed  of  half  of  lot  No.  103  at  Queensbury  from  his 
grandfather  Nehemiah,  10  Sept.,  1792.  Lived  one  year  at  Fort  Ann  and 
one  year  at  Troy.  Later  at  White  Creek,  Washins^ton  Co.  At  Troy  1813-15, 
New  York  1815,  White  Creek  1830,  Troy  1834,  White  Creek  1842-45,  Staten 
Island  1848.  He  was  at  first  a  china  dealer,  afterwards  a  dry  goods  mer- 
chant. Partner  of  his  brother  Daniel  in  Troy.  His  wife  became  a  Quaker  in 
181 1  and  frequently  preached.  He  died  of  bilious  colic  at  Cleveland  on  his 
return  from  a  visit  to  Milwaukee.  Buried  with  his  wife  in  Oakland  Ceme- 
tery, Troy.

Ann  Sutherland.  She  was  born  17  Sept.  1823,  died  4  Nov.,  1904.  He  was 
sent  to  the  Friends  boarding  school.  Nine  Partners,  at  the  age  of  five.  Went 
to  New  York  in  1822  and  was  in  the  dry  goods  business  until  185 1,  living 
six  years  in  Georgia.  Of  Cutter,  Buckley  &  Merritt,  1838-42.  Merritt, 
Ely   &   Co.,    1843-52.      President    of    New    England    Car    Spring   Co.,    1851-68. 


Vestryman  of  Calvary  Church,  New  York,  for  many  years.  Trustee  of 
General  Theological  Seminary.  A  prominent  member  of  the  Protestant 
Episcopal  Giurch.  He  removed  to  his  country  seat,  Lyndehurst,  Irvington- 
on-Hudson,  in  1867,  and  died  there  of  heart  disease,  5  Oct.,  1873.  Buried 
with  his  wife  and  two  children  in  Sleepy  Hollow  Cemetery,  Tarrytown.

School;  passed  two  years  in  Europe  and  was  graduated  from  Columbia  Law 
School  in  1874.  Purchased  his  farm  called  Leacote,  near  Rhinebeck,  N.  Y., 
in  1875,  and  is  now  living  there.  Married  at  Buffalo.  3  Aug.,  1876,  Elizabeth 
Cleveland,  daughter  of  Rt.  Rev.  Arthur  Cleveland  Coxe,  Bishop  of  Western 
New  York,  and  Katherine  Cleveland  Hyde.  He  has  been  a  trustee  of 
Hobart  College,  Geneva;  St.  Stephen's  College,  Annandale;  St.  John's 
Church,  Barrytown;  the  Starr  Institute,  Rhinebeck,  Public  School  No.  3, 
Rhinebeck;  vestryman  of  the  Church  of  the  Messiah,  and  for  thirty  years 
a  delegate  to  the  Diocesan  Convention.

living  at  Leacote,  Rhinebeck.
