TRANSLATION
FRankfurt, a.M., 11 November 1873
Dear Sir,
I have to ask your forgiveness for not having answered your kind letter
earlier and to thank you for the information it contained. I looked up the
reference, only Emory's Report U.S. Mexican Boundary Commission I was unable to
find, even with the help of Dr. Stücker. Shortly after I received your letter,
Prof. Carl Cramer from Zürich sent me another cactus which he had grown for
years in his window and which regularly grows such proliferations. Prof. Cramer
was kind enough to send me such a fruiüt. Unfortunately, it crumbled; the buds
he sent with it I planted at the Bot. gard. under Mr. Ofer's care as well as in
my window and they are doing well so that we may hope to grow some such shapes.
I took the liberty to copy some of Cramer's remarks: "Fer several years
I cultivated a cactus which regularly produces the deseribed monstrosity, which
produces at the topeof the fruit slightly sloping buds which may be used for
reproduction; my cactus has been bred from such a bud. Also the stem parts
produce a great number of slightly sloping buds which are tightly laced at the
base which serve for its reproduction, while other buds, not as tightly laced
do not get severed but are getting branched. The stem of the plant seems to be
highly heliotropical, however, this point has to be re-examined, since I am
not sure that this is the case. The plant cannot stand our winter."

Because of morphological interest which this proliferation has, I took
the liberty of sending Prof. Cramer your information.
The Frankfurt beer scandal seems to have caused surprise even outside
Frankfurt. However, it took on more important dimensions. 24 persons were to
be considered victims and later 42 people died of their injuries. The military
only took steps after the shops had been looted. The next day, 6 battalions,
5 quadrons appeared since further socialistic outbreaks were feared, even in
May two battalions remained in readiness.
Several changes have taken place here by the leaving of Dr. v. Fritsh

who was appointed Professor at Halle. Dr. Böttger, son of Prof. Böttger,
formerly of Offenbach, now teacher at the school (taking Dr. Reim's place who
began his trip to Japan in the «early days of October) will take over mineralogy e”
and geology. I was offered to take over lectures on fossil plants. herefore,
I became somwhat of a "fossil botanist", in the middle of studying the up to now
partly unknown prehistoric flora of the Mainz area and the Wetterau region.
Also, at the Senckenberg Society a section of fossil plants was created and put
in my charge.
The lectures at the Institute were very well visited. I hope to train
some botanists of some of the students at the Gymnasium. Unfortunately, the
young people are leaving Frankfurt just at the time when they have learned the
fundamentals. Two of my most diligent students were C. Chunz, son of the teacher
Chun, now student of the natural sciences in Leipzig, and teacher Goldmann
who unfortunately was hindered from continuing his studies by his by his appointment.
Asking you to forgive my prolonged silence and with best greetings,
Yours sincerely,,
Geyler, Dr. ph.

1876, September 22nd
Frankfurt a.M., Germany
TRANSLATION
Frankfurt a.M., 20 September 1876
Dear Sir,
I have received your works and thank you very much; however, the two
seeds you enclosed for the botanical garden have already germinated and through
your kindness, the garden has now 8 Yucca species. Unfortunately, there was a
change at our Institution since our old Ohler died quickly and unexpectedly
end of June of this year.
With regard to Juniperus Bermudiana I contacted Mr. Hochstetter in
Tübingen and hoped to obtain with his help the genuine fruits; however, he was
unable to help me. We have in our herbarium a specimen with flowers which was
collected by Dr. J. J. Rein (Professor of Geography in Marburg) in the Bermudas
and I take the liberty of sending you some of the flowers.
For the open speces here, the Agave Utahensis is very much recommended
since it can stand our climate. Unfortunately, the prices are too high for our
modest circumstances. Perhaps you still own some seeds of this interesting
species which?dön't need and in such a case I should ask you to send them to us
for the benefit of our botanical garden.
With best greetings,
Sincerely yours
Geyler
