is fully guaranteed by the favorable report made on them by the
judges on the Centennial Commission.

All material is of the best quality. The metal used in all our
instruments is red or hard composition. The introduction of phosphor
bronze for centres and pivots insures a hardness and consequent dura¬
bility only equalled by steel.

The weight of our instruments is also carefully considered in con¬
nection with their use. Those intended for purely astronomical or
the higher grades of geodetic work, while qot of excessive weight, are
yet so constructed as to insure perfect stability. Those, the use of
which necessarily involves much transportation by hand, are so con¬
structed that, while the weight is materially decreased, the strength
required is obtained by a judicious and careful distribution of the
material used.

The packing of our instruments is also executed with the greatest
care. All the portable instruments are packed in neat boxes, where
the instruments and accessories are firmly and conveniently arranged,
so they can be put in and taken out without trouble.

Large instruments, especially those of iron frames, are covered with
cloth-dust; this finish giving them a good appearance and tending to
comfort in handling in cold weather. Unless otherwise ordered, we
give our instruments a bronze finish.

Although the illustrations in this catalogue give a fair idea of our
instruments as at present made, yet it must be borne in mind that our
constant aim is to improve on them, to increase their accuracy and
simplicity, and make them convenient and pleasant to use.

Particular attention is given to the designing of instruments for
special uses.

All instruments packed and forwarded by express at our risk.

Terms net cash on delivery by express.

ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORIES.

An observatory is almost indispensable to the profitable use
of astronomical instruments, especially those of large size,
and many persons are deterred from erecting one from
an erroneous impression as to its cost. We are prepared
to give this branch of our business special attention , and
to erect and put in working order observatories at reason¬
able prices. A cheap yet efficient style is represented in
our cut on title-page of this Catalogue . The walls may be
constructed of wood, brick , or galvanized iron , the latter
material being the best, as in a building of this kind the
difference between inside and outside temperature is very
slight. Plans and estimates furnished on data given by
those desiring our services in this line .
