TRANSLATION

Cincinatti, March 10, 18%.
Dear Colleague,
I was very happy to receive your shipment and wish I could send you something
you like as proof of my sincere gratitude. [I shall be happy to cultivate your cacti
in the future since your extraordinary love for them inspires me to become more fond
of them. I was not fortunate enough to make as much progress as you did in your
herbarium. Study alone is a slow process and I regret very much not to be able to
enjoy your teachings and knowledge in my enterprise. Perhaps the stars will be kind
to clear up the mistakes I make.
I do not know how much to send you now because I believe that you should re-
ceive the same number you sent me. Should the number I send you not equal the ones
you sent me, please let me know so I won't owe you too much. [I can send you only
very little of what you wanted, because most of my duplicates are already packed for
the trip to Germany. These I shall send you from the fatherland together with the
ones I collect in the South. Should you still receive my letter in Belleville,
would you please do me the favor of making a map of the regions where you collected
most, giving the names of the places, (especially where you found the orchids, Polygala,
Scirpus) together with the time of their flowering.
This map is supposed to be a guide for Dr. Homburg who will collect for me in
Illinois and Missouri. Do the prairies of Illinois offer things different from those
of Missouri? --
Although I hope that my representative will send me some beautiful things,
I still ask you to give Dr. Schott the following things for me:
All orchids (except Orch. spectab. and the ones you have sent), the American
species of Sagittaria, Seymeria macrophylla, cuita bulbiflora, Gerardia (except
tennifolia), several specimens of Scrip. quadrang. and also, if you have them, all
Quercus species. Please let me know what you were able to do in your next letter.
Of the things sent to me, 65 species were new to me, but I like them all. Now,
I own some misformed plants (by accident), I shall keep them for you. After my return,
you can have specimens of 150-200 of the most beautiful of the 400 species of plants
