month of January 1959, The Board of Supervisors has adopted an order
approving a collection for the March of Dimes among County employees, I
have been appointed Chairman of the drive for employees of the Depart~
ment of Arboreta and Botanic Gardens,

it would like, as your department chairman, to inform you of the contin-~
uing need to support the March of Dimes Campaign:

1. The fight against polio must be pressed to victory. Patient care
| will be continued to thousands of needy victims,

2. Results grewing out of polio research will be directed to the pro=
blem of other virus diseases, the hidden causes of illness, crip-
pling, and death,

3, A broad-scale research program, sponsored by the National Founda-
tion, will seek the causes of arthritis, its prevention or cure,
Patient aid will be made available to children through eighteen
years.

4. Research will be aimed at finding cause and means of prevention of
the largest unmet health problem-~one out of seventeen children
born each year wit} some defect. Again, the National Foundation
will provide medical and surgical care te correct such defects as

hare lip, club foot, cleft pallette, ete,

By contributing to the March of Dimes, County employees can help many,
including some fellew-County employee, as records show that in the past
years well over sixty County-employee families received assistance from
the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.

If you wish to join in this campaign, please submit your contribution
to me in a sealed envelope prior to January 30, 1959, Please place
your name on the envelope so I may enter it on the March of Dimes scroll.

Plans for the completion of the Biblical Garden are under way. A new path
has been marked from the top of Tallac Knoll running east and through part of
the olive grove and intersecting a sawdust path which runs from Protea Hill to
the top of the Knoll, There are plans also for a small Biblical Herb Garden
adjacent to the Herb Garden,

A new path marking the entrance to the Biblical Garden will run from this
garden up the steps leading through the Fragrance Garden and will connect with
the sawdust path. It is hoped that at least 50 different plants whieh are known

The BIG news for this month is of course the Annual Picnic, Everyone should make
an attempt to attend as this affair is going to be a great one - plenty of food
for all and lots of fun, A map is enclosed to aid the weary travelers,

ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

The staff here has been in quite a turmoil these past weeks with all the moving
into new offices in the nearly completed wing. The library has been completely
moved, with thanks to Sully's crew for a prompt and efficient job. Russ and Carol
are almost beside themselves with all the room they have, The girls in the Business
office are experiencing the same feeling, having moved into the old library quar-
ters. Dr. Enari, Gerry Patten and Glen Hiatt have new spacious fasilities in the
wing also. Dr. Ames and Dick Strong are very happy with their offices in the Ad-
ministration Building.

The Herbarium will not be staffed and in full swing until about this time next year,
Lou Martin is already scheduling education classes for the Fall to be held in the
basement of the wing. TLIandscaping of the building will soon be underway.

FIELD

The Collector's Garden of the Home Demonstration Gardens is getting quite a face-
lifting and is worth a visit from all staff members, Plans for the Fragrance Gar-
den (Blind Garden) are finally coming through, Speakers, recorders, and special
plantings should be installed and ready for use in early Fall, The Hugo Reid Adobe
is practically finished and will be quite an added attraction for our visitors. In
the near future the "Jungle" will be fenced off, leaving just one pathway through
the area, This should ease the problems experienced by the Gatehouse crew, and
help McCandless with his maintenance of this section,

GATEHOUSE

The attendance figures as reported by the Gatehouse indicate another record year
of over 372,000, an increase of 77% over the last fiscal year, This fine record
is in no small way a result of the combined efforts of all the staff in keeping
the Arboretum attractive and useful to our visitors. Gongratuiations to everyone,

shade gardens at Descanso, Attendance records were also set at Descanso this Vear ,
with approximatety 236,000 visitors reported, an increase of 351%. Though the
dropping of an admission charge had some influence on this increase, the fine staff
of the gardens is also to be congratulated, The Gatehouse will soon have a saran
