My mom got this for Christmas
the year it came out and I was a very precocious reader. What an amazing, fun book. I'm pretty sure I loved it more than she did and read it with much more excitement and fascination! I recall asking my dad a lot of questions about the bigger words I was coming across.
I loved the pictures (it has pictures? must be a kids' book!), the short essays about the weirdest, wildest topics, the stories about the storytellers themselves. I believe it was the first 'grown-up' book I had ever seen--she got Hollywood Babylon that same year and kept it far away from me!--and though I was far too young for lots of it, I adored it. 45+ years later, I still have her copy and have kept it with me all these years, as well as the follow-up, Murderess Ink. If you enjoy reading mysteries, no matter who your favorite author is, you'll find something to love in either of these whimsical, charming books.
