PUBLICATIONS OF THE MUSEUM
TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY
Three serials of The Museum of Texas Tech University are
published by Texas Tech University Press under the auspices
of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, and
in cooperation with the International Center for Arid and
Semi-Arid Land Studies. Short research studies are published
as Occasional Papers, whereas longer contributions appear as
Special Publications. Papers of practical application to
collection management and museum operations are issued in
the Museology series. All are numbered separately and
published on an irregular basis.
The preferred abbreviation for citing The Museum’s
Occasional Papers is Occas. Papers Mus., Texas Tech Univ.
Institutional subscriptions are available through Texas Tech
University Press, Sales Office, Texas Tech University,
Lubbock, Texas 79409. Individuals can purchase separate
numbers of the Occasional Papers for $2.00 each from Texas
Tech University Press. Remittance in U.S. currency check,
money order, or bank draft must be enclosed with request (add
$1.00 per title or 200 pages of publications requested for
foreign postage; residents of the state of Texas must pay a
5 per cent sales tax on the total purchase price). Copies of
the “Revised checklist of North American mammals north of
Mexico, 1982” (Jones et ai, 1982, Occas. Papers Mus., Texas
Tech Univ., 80:1-22) are available at 1.25 each in orders of

CHECKLIST AND BIBLIOGRAPHY
OF NICARAGUAN CHIROPTERA
J. Knox Jones, Jr., and Robert D. Owen
More than a decade has elapsed since publication of a checklist
and bibliography for the bats of Nicaragua (Baker and Jones,
1975). In that period, the number of species reported from the
country has increased from 77 to 85, and several important
research works have appeared, some dealing with karyologic,
electrophoretic, and related studies. The present compilation is a
survey of the relevant literature through 1985.
Following is a list of the taxa of bats currently known to occur
in Nicaragua. P'or each taxon, citations are given to publications
that are primary sources of information on Nicaraguan material;
included are some that might otherwise be overlooked for
primary information, such as Hall (1981), in which there are
figures of crania and rami of specimens from the country, and
Swanepoel and Genoways (1979), in which selected cranial
measurements of Nicaraguan specimens are recorded. Fhere also
are a few citations to f)apers on ectoparasites. Normally, passing
references simply to “Nicaragua,” even when museum catalog
numbers were listed (see, for example, Forman, 1968, 1972, and
Phillips, 1971), are not included. In some instances, bats have
been reported in the literature under a scientific name different
from the one used here and we have noted such names wdiere it
seemed appropriate to do so.
Arrangement of genera generally follows Hall (1981). Species
and subspecies are listed alphabetically. Geographical and
ecological considerations sugg-^st to us that, with the advent of
2

additional field exploration, more than 100 species of bats
ultimately will be found to occur in Nicaragua.

REVISED CHECKLIST OF NORTH AMERICAN MAMMALS
NORTH OF MEXICO, 1986
J. Knox Jones, Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways,
Robert S. Hoffmann, Dale W. Rice, and Clyde Jones
For more than a decade, we have periodically updated a
checklist of scientific and vernacular names of species of North
American mammals (Jones et al., 1973, 1975, 1979, 1982). Such
checklists provide a ready reference for many scientific endeavors,
both in the field and in the laboratory, and are particularly useful
to students. Since publication four years ago of the most recent
revision of the list, demand for copies has severely depleted the
original supply. Moreover, many significant taxonomic and
nomenclatorial changes have appeared in the primary
mammalogical literature since March of 1982. In this version of
the checklist, we have attempted to include all species of Recent
mammals, a few of which now may be extinct, occurring in
North America (and its adjacent waters) to the north of Mexico
and recognized in publications through May of 1986. Our list
represents a consensus among the six authors but does not
necessarily imply complete agreement among them on all
controversial points. Some suggested changes that have not been
adopted are discussed in the text preceding the checklist.
As most readers are aware, a number of species of mammals
not native to North America have been introduced theftfl^^ the
years. Thirteen such taxa (four more than in 1982l_JiE SmAiRM
in the checklist (identified by an asterisk) because they now occur
in the wild state in numbers sufficient to justi^pigli^qthhlaaiR
Other exotic species possibly will be included in subsequent ^ists'^
