AVTES.~Th\s name, more usually written Campiii, came into the parish with Mr. Edward Camppen, in

the following under Marsh Street : —
Mr. Edward Camppen House £24
for Hood's land 14
for Mr. Snell's barn ... ... 3
The precedmg tenant was his kinsman, Mr. Francis Wragg, the coachmaster, whose tombstone,

His marriage licence (Bishop of London), dated 7 Oct., 1777, describes him as of St. Stephen's.
Coleman Street, London, widower, and he is to marry Mary Crosier, of St. Mary-le-bone,
Middlesex, spinster, aged over 21, at St. Mary-le-bone, while the register shows that they were
duly married the following day. Of the marriage there was only one child, Mary, who died,
as the inscription shows, unmarried, in 1864, aged 88.
Edward Campen, as the name is spelt, appears in T/ic Universal British Directory^ 1797, Vol. \'.,

The death of his widow, at Walthamstow, is recorded in The Times of the 20th June, and that of
his daughter, Mary Camppen, at Dalston, in the issue of the 12th August.
r.eorge Crosier was apparently a near relative of Mrs. Camppen, and his death is thus recorded in

His death is thus recorded in The St. James" Chronicle or British Evening Post, of the llth-13th
July, 1780:—
"Yesterday at Hale End, near Woodford, Essex, in the 86th Year of his age, Mr. Loxham, many
years Hatter and Sword Cutler, under the Royal Exchange."
After his death the house at Hale End was oflered for sale and the advertisement relative to same appeared
in The Morning Post and Daily Advertiser of the 24th April, 1781, page 3, column 4. It states that the house is
to be sold on the 1st May, and describes it as a copyhold estate at Hale End, between Walthamstow and Woodford,
late in the possession of Wm. Loxham. Calls it a brick dwelling house, consisting of 4 rooms on a floor, 2 pleasure
and 1 kitchen garden, a canal, 2 fish ponds, 3 fields of meadow land, all adjoining, the whole containing upwards
of 15acres. Lydia Loxham, the widow, made her will 8th December, 1782, proved at London (P.C.C. 521 Fountain)
12th October, 1792. She describes herself as of Woodford, co. Essex, widow of Wm. Loxham, late Citizen and
Cutler of London, deceased, and desires to be buried in the same vault wherein her husband was interred. She
states that nephews Edward L. and Robert L. have standing in their names in Trust for her £1,000 South Sea

are David Mitchell, Thomas King of Cutlers' Hall. The Will was proved by Robert Loxham, Esq., her nephew,
with power reserved for Edward Loxham, Esq., the nephew and remaining executor.
The Public Advertiser of Tuesday, the 9th October, 1792, records her death as follows : —
"Saturday se'nnight, died at Woodford, in Essex, in the 88th year of her age, Mrs. Lydia Loxham,
relict of the late Mr. William Loxham, hatter and sword-cutler, Cornhill."
The next name on the tombstone is that of Robert Loxham. As William and Lydia Loxham left no
surviving issue, the future occupiers of the Hale End house were the descendants of his brother, the Rev. Robert
Lo.xham, as shown in the pedigree.
Robert left an interesting will, as it names so many relations. It was proved at London (P.C.C. 292

His death is given in The Gentleman's Magazine, No. 72, Pt. 1, page 381, as follows : —
" 15th .'April, 1802, at Woodford, in his 75th year, Mr. Robert Loxham, late of the Royal Exchange,
insurance broker."
The next name on the .\ltar-tomb is Richard Loxham. He was nephew to the last named, was an attorney,
and his death is in The Times of the 21st October, 1813, as follows : —
" On Friday, the loth inst., at his chambers in New Inn, Richard Loxham, Esq."
In his will he describes himself as of New Inn, Middlesex, attorney at law, and states therein that if he dies
in the vicinity of London he desires " to be laid in the Vault in Walthamstow churchyard in which my late uncle
Robert is laid." He says, " My freehold estates will descend to my brother Robert Loxham, and I give him all the
chattel, leasehold property, also to him all arrears of rent and furniture, plate, clothes, wearing apparel, watches,
seals, rings, trinkets, etc., also all my MSS. books and papers." To each of his sisters, Elizth. Loxham, Ann

and interest I shall have in said estate upon Trusts in the said Indenture of Release expressed, and I appoint sd.
G. S. and R. B. my executors so far as regards all the monies, etc., which at my decease shall be vested in the said
Trusts. Dt. 2nd Sept., 1811. Signed Richard Loxham. The will was proved at London, with codocil,
2nd November, 1813 (P.C.C. 553 Heathfield) by Robert Loxham, power reserved to Elizabeth Loxham.
The next name on the tomb is that of Elizabeth Lcxham, daughter of the Rev. Richard Loxham, Rector of
Stickney, Lincolnshire, by Elizabeth his wife. She married her cousin, Robert Lo.xham, son of Edward Loxham,
and they both had a common grandfather in the Rev. Robert Loxham, Rector of Workington, Cumberland, etc.
Her death notice is in The Times of 24th August, 1825.
Robert Loxham, of The Chestnuts, Hale End, her husband, is the next name on the tomb. He filled the
office of churchwarden 1826-1828, to which he had been nominated the five previous years.
IV
The last is their daughter Elizabeth, who died, unmarried, in 1861.
The will of the above Richard Loxhani, of Stickney, Lincolnshire, dated 5th April, 1785, was proved 2"lh
October of the same year (P.C.C. 517 Ducard). It contains no Walthamstow references.
Edward Loxham, father of the above Robert, of The Chestnuts, in his will dated 18th April, 1798, and proved
(P.C.C. 492 Walpole) 26th June following, calls himself Citizen and Cutler of London, but residing at Liverpool,
county Lancashire. He desires to be buried in Kirkham churchyard, county Lancashire, in the same grave as his
wife and leaves to his son Robert certain property in Lancashire and " copyhold estate or customary estates held of
the manor of Salisbury Hall in the county of Essex," subject to .i;400 which he leaves to trustees (they include " my
brother Robert Loxham of Woodford, Essex Esq.") to be given to his son Robert. The will mentions many
relations who are contained in the pedigree.
Under his Will he leaves to his son Robert "my 2 handled silver cup," to his daughter Lydia Rigby '■ my
India counterpane," and to his daughter Ann Bridges " my stamped counterpane."
One of the witnesses to the Will is Richard Lo.xham, of New Inn, London.
His brother, William Loxham (great-grandfather of the 1st Baron Farrer) made his Will as of Woodford,
Esse.x, Esquire, on the 2nd September, 1802. He gives to his wife £50, and also all furniture, beds, bedding,
linen, plate, wine, liquors, garden tools and effects and all effects in nature of furniture either useful or ornamental
in and about his house and premises at Woodford. He also gives the house at Woodford, with outhouses, gardens
and appurtances, and all real and personal estate to his wife and his son-in-law James Farrer, of Lincoln's Inn
Fields, upon trust to pay out of rents an annuity of £400 to his wife for life, quarterly, and all rest of rents, etc.,
out of said real and personal estate to his daughter Frances Farrer for life, and if her husband survives her then
to him and their issue equally. His wife and James Farrer are executrix and executor. The Will is signed
William Loxham, with only one witness, William Webb (mark).
By Codicils dated 29th November, 1802, and 10th December. 1806, he gives to his wife £50 and a further
annuity of £200, and to his nephew Richard Loxham. of New Inn, £100. Both Codicils are signed, but owing
to the absence of witnesses, Thomas Atkinson, of Newcastle House, Lincoln's Fields, Middlesex, Esq., and
Thomas Johnston, of same place, Esq., appeared on the 10th June, 1807, and testified to the writmg. They
say that they knew William Loxham for many years, and that he died in February last.
His death is thus recorded in The Times, of Monday, the 23rd February, 1807 : —
"On Friday last, at his house in Woodford, William Loxham, Esq."
The Will was proved, with two Codicils (P.C.C. 508 Lushington), 20th June, 1807, by Mary, the relict, and
James Farrer. This Will and the pedigree correct the Farrer of Ingleborough pedigree in the current edition of
Burke's Landed Gentry (1925), where it states that James Farrer married Frances, only daughter and heiress of
the Rev. William Loxham, late of Woodford, Essex. This error has persisted in the various editions of the work
for some seventy years. These Farrers at one time quartered the following Loxham coat, viz. : or three gutt6e de
sang a bend gu. Burka's Landed Gentry, 4th edition, 1863.
It will be noticed that the Hale End property is variously referred to as being in both Walthamstow and
Woodford, and in this connection it may be well to mention that this William Loxham has nothing to do with
" The Chestnuts " at Hale End, but lived on the High Road, Woodford, on a much larger estate, the annual value
of which in 1804 was £60. The house, I believe, was the one now known as " The Roses."
Ann Loxham, sister of Elizabeth Loxham, who married her cousin, Robert Loxham, of Hale End, made
her Will on the 22nd August, 1817, as late of Hickney, Lincolnshire. She leaves £100 and clothes to her sister
Elizabeth, wife of Robert Loxham, of Walthamstow, Essex, gent.
The will was proved 9th December, 1817 (P.C.C. 633 Effingham), by her brother, the Rev. Robert Loxham.
The will of the last named, dated 17th April, 1820, and proved 22nd December, 1828 (P.C.C. 720 Sutton),
by his brother the Rev. Richard Loxham, mentions inter alia his sister, wife of Robert Loxham, of Walthamstow,
Essex, to whom he leaves £100.
The Walthamstow Rate Book for 1830 gives the Rental of the House at Hale End as £50 and of the Land
£29, and the Assessment in the Combined Rental as £11 17s. Od.
The name frequently occurs in the Lists of Woodford ratepayers such as Lydia in 1780, Robert in 1795, and
William in 1796. There is an Altar-tomb in Woodford Churchyard to the above William Loxham (d. 1807) and
his wife Mary (d. 1826), and seven members of the Farrer family.

APPENDIX III.
THE WRAGG FAMILY.
Members of the Wragg family seem to have carried people to Loadon and back to Walthamstow, first in
their coaches and later in their omnibuses, for over 100 years.
The name first appears in the Poor Rate Hooks for Lady Day, 1759, to September, IVfii), under Marsh
Street, as follows : —
Mr. Francis Ragg's house rent ... ... £20
For Mr. Mill's land 20
For Blunt's lands 2G
The previous tenant was Mr. Harlande, with the same lands.
In the Assessment for Poor Rate, made 15th July, 1782, the corresponding entry is as follows : —
Mr. Francis Wragg's House ... ... £22
For Bu.xton's land ... ... ... ... 26
., the barn ... ... ... ... ... 3
, i
This entry continued until the .■\ssessment for Michaelmas, 1794, to Lady Day, 1795, when the tenant
of the house, but with different lands, is his kinsman Edward Camppen, rent of house being £21, as mentioned in
connection with Inscription No. 18.
The first named Francis Wragg married, at St. Mary's Church, 20th March, 1759, Elizabeth Watts, of West
Ham. He was Overseer 1770-1771, and Churchwarden 1775-1777. He died without issue, and his Will, as of

His death is thus recorded in The Gentleman's Magazine, vol. 65, part 1, page 358 ; —
" 8th April at Walthamstow, Mr. Wragg, many years master of the stage coaches there."
Administration of the goods of the sister-in-law of the last named, viz., Mary Wragg, relict of his brotlier
Robert, she being described as formerly of Castle Hedingham and late of Walthamstow, was granted,
28th January, 1818 (P.C.C. Act Book) to Robert Wragg, one of her children.
This Robert Wragg continued the family business in Marsh Street, with which he combined that of farmer
and corndealer, also in Marsh Street.
The following reference from Pigot & Co.'s Directory, 1826/7, which refers to him, is of interest. It is
taken from the Walthamstow section, sub coaches : —
" To London Mr. Wragg's, from the Nag's Head, and Chequers, daily, at 8, 9 and 10 in the morning,
and 3, 5, 6 and 8 in the evening to the Green Dragon, Bishopsgate Street."
In the 1832/4 edition the notice is as follows: —
" To London, Robert Wragg's coaches, from Walthamstow, every morning (Sunday excepted) at
8, 9 and 10, every afternoon at ^ past 2, J past 5 and every evening at 7 ; and on Sunday morning at
8 and 9 and Sunday evening at 6, 7 and 8."
He occurs under " Livery Stable Keepers and Fly Proprietors " in this edition, and is " licensed to let post
horses, chaises and flys."
He was Overseer 1822-1823 and Churchwarden 1829-1831.
In his Will, dated 11th February, 1850, he is described as of Walthamstow, yeoman. The Will was proved
for under £2,000 (P.C.C. 1862, 123), 3rd February, 1862, by his son Francis Wragg, of Walthamstow, farmer, with
power reserved to John Wragg, of The Pavement, Finsbury, Middlesex, livery stable keeper, also son of the
testator, and the other executor.
In 1848 Robert is described as a gent., of Marsh Street, and his son Robert as a corndealer at the same
address, while in 1851 Francis, another son, carries on his father's business as coach proprietor in Marsh Street,
and Robert is a farmer in Marsh Street. The year 1850 sees Francis in sole charge of the business, as his brother
Robert died in 1846, a comparatively young man, aged 36.
Francis Wragg married by licence, at St. Mary's Church, Ann Whitfield, of Wanstead, 16th February, 1837,
He was Overseer 1854-1855 and 1856-1857, Churchwarden 1858-1859, and Surveyor of Highways 1861. In 1848
he is described as a farmer, at Clay Street, where he is a horse and gig owner, and has livery stables, running
coaches to London seven times a day. In 1862 he is an omnibus owner at Church End, also a farmer there, while
1886 finds him living at Fairmount, Church Hill. His Will, dated 7th May, 1891, as of Church Hill, where he
died, was proved for personal estate of £4,902 (P.C.C. 1891, 1198) by his two sons, Francis Whitfield Wragg, of
17, Church Lane, Whitechapel, veterinary surgeon, and Robert Thomas Wragg, of 11, Great St. Helens, London,
solicitor.
