SOME REASONS WHY |

MARKET GARDENERS

WE have now been selling seeds for many years, and at the opening of every season
we have tried to give sound reasons why, as a rule, growers for market were safer in buy-
ing seeds from us than from concerns that not only lack the practical experience we claim
to have, but who also have not the facilities for testing their seeds before selling, that we
possess. That our arguments have been convincing our steadily increasing trade furnishes 4
the best reply. We know, that to our friends and customers, our constant repetition of
the story must seem unnecessary, but they will understand that the advantages as seeds-
men, which we claim to possess and state, are intended for those who have not dealt with .
us before.

Every now and again competitors will unfairly make the statement that our prices
are high. The best answer we can make to such a charge is, to ask a comparison of the
prices in this list with those of any house you deem equally reliable, and see if we do nof
average as low, or lower than they. Occasionally, some varieties, we will list at seemingly
higher prices than some one else may offer, but when such is the case there are always
good reasons, although somewhat difficult to explain in a list such as this. Take, for
instance, such an article as Cabbage. We know that of certain leading sorts we have the
very best strains in the country, brought about by a constant supervision in the selection
of the heads for seed purposes nearest to the true type. This selection involves not only
extra labor, but also a large loss of plants, because all failing to come up to the standard
are thrown out. Consequently, we do not obtain as much seed as others who do not use
the same care and supervision. With such a valuable crop as Cabbage, a matter of a dollar
or two per pound in the price is a small consideration, when by the use of inferior or untrue
seed, you may be subjected to a loss of hundreds of dollars. " Another important instance
that we might call attention to is that of Peas. This season we ask $4.50 per bushel for
our best stock of Extra Early Peas (Henderson's “ First of All”) Some one else, per-
haps, lists Extra Early Peas at $4.00 per bushel. Now, unless we can personally meet you
and explain that the extra labor entailed in removing the runners from the growing Peas,
or thoroughly “ rogueing ” the stock, as it is called—which increases the cost but insures
purity—you naturally think that we are above the market, while the fact is that the party
selling at $4.00 per bushel probably makes a larger profit on his sales than we do at the
higher rate. We could give dozens of other illustrations, but we think that we have stated
oufficient to show any intelligent man that if good seeds are desired, a fair price must be
paid.

Postage on Seeds.—As we do a large local trade, in justice to those of our
customers who buy at our counters, we have for several years based prices in this list on
the purchaser adding postage when buying Seed in bulk to be sent by mail. The postage
we exact is this: that when seeds are ordered to be mailed in quantities of $ Ib. and up-
ward, postage must be added to Catalogue prices at the rate of 16 cents per pound. As
postage for Beans and Peas, please add 30 cents per quart; and to Corn, 20 cents per
quart to Catalogue prices. But when ordered by the packet or ounce, either Vegetable or
Flower Seeds will be sent by mail at Catalogue prices without extra charge.

ABOUT FORWARDING AND REMITTING.

Every order is executed at once on its receipt, or a reason given why it has not been
sent, so that parties ordering may know that if goods are not received in proper time, it is
almost certain that the letter has not been received by us. Remittances should be made
either in the form of a Money Order, Bank Draft, Express Order, or Registered Letter.
Remittances in any other way are entirely at the sender's risk. In regard to Postal Notes,
which are likelv to be largely used, we are obliged to say that, as they afford no security, 4
and are readily negotiable into whomsoever’s hands they may fall, we cannot hold our.
selves responsible for letters lost in transit that may contain them.

How Our Book Premiums Gan be Obtained.

The plan we adopted several years ago, of giving Mr. Peter Henderson’s Books to
customers, as Premiums on orders, has, we think, been mutually satisfactory; and as we
shall continue the practice on a more extensive scale than ever, we ask of our patrons care-
ful consideration to the terms detailed below, by which these different books may be ob.
tained. Mr. Henderson’s last production, “Garden and Farm Topics,” as will be seen, can
be had on orders of $10 and upward, while for orders of $20 and upward, the purchaser
may select either “Gardening for Profit’ “ Practical Floriculture,” or “‘ Gardening for
Pleasure.”

While the selling price of these four works is $1.50 each, we ourselves publish only
one of them, “ Garden and Farm Topics,”’ which enables us to offer it as a premium on a
smaller order. We make this statement to explain, what might otherwise appear contra-
dictory. In the information given, these various books do not conflict with each other, as
most of our costumers perhaps know. Here are the conditions: On all orders from this
catalogue to the amount of $10 and upward (in one order) we will include, without charge,
a copy of Peter Henderson’s new book, “ Garden and Farm Topics,” a work of 250 pages,
handsomely bound in cloth, and containing an excellent portrait on steel of the author.
The subjects this book embrace will be found below. When the order is to the extent of
$20 and upward, purchasers may choose any one of Mr. Henderson’s three books, “ Gar-
dening for Profit,” “ Practical Floriculture,” or ‘Gardening for Pleasure,” the price of
which is $1.50 each; and when the order amounts to $40 and upward, we will send the
buyer his choice of any two of the above four books, or, instead, a copy of our late work,
“Henderson's Handbook of Plants,’ the value of which is $3.00, but it is understood that
any book or books desired must be selected at the time of ordering. This last condition ts
tmpcrative, and under no circumstances can we deviate from it; and customers must not be
disappointed if we fail to honor subsequent demands made upon us for the books as Pre-
miums.

CABBAGE, CAULIFLOWER,

AND OTHER SEEDS FOR

FALL SOWING.

In presenting this list of Seeds, we would call special attention to the time and manner of sowing. Full direc-
tions are given in our work, “GARDENING FOR Prorirt,” but we again place it here ina condensed form. Cabbage,
Cauliflower and Lettuce Seeds that are sown to produce plants for cold frames, should be sown, in open garden, from
10th to 30th September, taking the latitude of New York asa guide, (where they are sown about 15th Sept.), earlier if y
for the North—later if for the South. In all cases be sure that the soil in which the seed is to be sown is thoroughly
pulverized by digging or ploughing, harrowing or raking—sow in beds—4 feet wide is convenient—having the surface
level and smooth. After sowing, rake regularly again over the surface, and roll, or pat the bed down with the back
of a spade. Spinach should be sown about the same dates, the ground covered with at least two inches deep of rotted,
stable manure, or in lieu of that some concentrated fertilizer at the rate of 1 to 2 tons per acre, then well ploughed or
dug, and harrowed or raked. The seed sown in rows at one foot apart, if to be worked by hoe; at twenty inches, if
to be worked by horse. The ground to be rolled in any case after sowing, if it can be done.

We have now ready for delivery, new crop(American grown) seed of the following leading varieties. Jf by mail,
in quantities of + 1b. and upwards, postage must be added to Catalogue prices at the rate of 16 cents per lb.

\

Henderson’s Selected Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage. Henderson’s Early Summer Cabbage.

HENDERSON’S SELECTED EARLY JERSEY WAKEFIELD CABBAGE.

To most growers for market the great value and characteristics of this variety are well understood. To those
who may not, however, be familiar with it, we would say that it is justly considered the best Early Cabbage in culti-
vation. Among its merits, may be mentioned, its large size of head, small outside foliage, and its uniformity in pro-
ducing a crop. The heads are pyramidal in shape, having a blunted or rounded peak. Last fall seed of
Jersey Wakefield Cabbage sold readily for $10 00 and $12 00 per lb., owing to its scarcity. This season we are ena-
bled to offer the same fine stock at following rates: 40c. per oz.; $1 25 per} lb.; $4 00 per lb.

HENDERSON’S EARLY SUMMER CABBAGE,

It is now nine years since we first disseminated this variety, and with the many really good new things with
which we have become identified, we consider this, perhaps, the best. The Early Summer is about ten days later than
the Wakefield, but being of over double the size, it may be classed as the best large early cabbage. In weight it is
equal to most of the late varieties, and its short outer leaves enable it to be planted nearly as close as the Jersey Wake-
field, about 12,000 to the acre, while Early Flat Dutch, Winningstadt, etc., producing no larger heads, can only be__
grown at the rate of 8,000 to the acre. Another excellent quality of the Early Summer Cabbage is that it keeps ;
longer without bursting open after heading than any variety we know of. We would however, caution those of our
customers who intend to grow it in cold frames (to winter over) to sow it atleast ten days later than the Wakefield, or
other early varieties, as it has some tendency to run to seed if sown at the dates suitable for other early sorts. In this
latitude we sow Early Summer on the 25th of September. 30c. per oz.; $1 00 per }1b.; $3 50 per lb.

HENDERSON'S EARLY SNOWBALL CAULIFLOWER.

During the past six years we have received hundreds of the most satisfactory testimonials
from all parts of the country, from those who tried the Early Snowball. It gave excellent results
from spring sowing, and it is equally certain to do as well when sown in fall and wintered over
in cold frames. For this purpose the proper time for sowing in this section is from the 15th to
the 25th of September. J¢ is the earliest of all Cauliflowers, and is without an equal for forcing
during winter and spring. Its dwarf habit of growth, and closeness of outside leaves especially
recommend it for the purpose.

Price, 30 cts. per pkt. ; $1.50 per 4 oz. ; $5.00 per oz.

HENDERSON'S NORFOLK SAVOY LEAVED SPINACH.— AMERICAN GROWN.
CHOICE STOCK, VERY CURLY.

This is a comparatively new kind of Spinach, producing nearly twice the weight of crop
as the ordinary sorts ; by a comparative test in our trial grounds, the past four winters, we have
proved it also to be the hardiest of all varieties of Spinach ; a most important quality in cold
districts. Many of our leading Market Gardeners in this vicinity, whom we induced to try it,
are so thoroughly pleased with it, that they will now use no other variety.

Price, 30 cts. per lb. ; 10 lbs. for $2.50.

NEW THICK LEAVED SPINACH.

' One of the best for market ; thick leaved, somewhat crumpled, dark in color, and stands
,, without running to seed, This sort has recently become very popular in the neighborhood
of New York.

Price, 30 cts. per lb. ; 10 Ibs. for $2.50.

General List of Vegetable Seeds.

The prices quoted are based on customers paying delivery charges when sent either by express or freight, but as
our prices on most heavy seeds, (notably Peas,) are very low, it will be found even after paying delivery charges,

customers will have received their supplies at exceedingly favorable rates.

Whenever desired, we will send by mail,

but when this is to be done postage must always be added at the rate of 16 ets. per lb., or 30 cts. per quart for Beans and

Peas, and 20 ects. per quart for Corn.

An entirely new Book on Farming, entitled :

HOW THE FARM PAYS,

WILLIAM CROZIER and PETER HENDERSON.

The following extract from the introduction, best tells the scope and plan of the work :

“Tt is doubtful if any book on agriculture has ever been written in this country, of
which the writers have had opportunities for such extensive and varied experience as have
the authors of this work. Wur1am Crozier is, perhaps now better known than any other
farmer on this continent, principally from the fact that for the past twenty years the exhibi-
tion of his fine stock and other farm products has enabled him to take more prizes than
any other working farmer in the country, and that to-day the dairy and farm at Northport,
L. L., on which these products have been raised, are models worthy of imitation by the tens -
of chokeindide engaged in farming who have failed to make it the profitable business that it
has been, and still continues to be, to Mr. Crozier. The co-author, Perrr Henperson, the
senior member of our firm, although not a farmer, has long been considered as is well known,
an authority on all matters relating to practical garden work. His book, Gardening for
Profit, now in the hands of probably 100,000 readers, has shown how to make gardening
pay. In the present work, Mr. Henderson tells in plain words the manner of growing such
Vegetables and Fruits as can best be made profitable on the farm, besides interchanging
with Mr. Crozier his opinion on such operations of the farm as his long practice in ecultiva-
ting the soil enables him to do.

‘* Mr. Crozier and Mr. Henderson have had the project in contemplation, of getting up @ a
work on American farming for the past ten years; but both being engaged in the active
work of their large operations on the farm and garden, it is doubtful if they would ever
have got together to accomplish it, unless the idea had been conceived of getting the work
up in conversational form, the words as spoken being taken down by a stenographer. This
simplified the work of book making greatly, and it is believed that given in this way, it has
been made plainer and more interesting to the reader, than if written in the usual manner.
The benefit of this plan is derived from the fact that the answer often suggests the question,
just such as the reader would be likely to ask, but with no one at his elbow to answer. It
is here answered to the satisfaction of the questioner, or if not, the question is repeated un-
til the subject has been made clear.”

We expect to have copies ready for sale by October Ist. How raz Farm Pays isa
large octavo volume of 400 pages, profusely illustrated and handsomely bound in cloth.
Sent postpaid on receipt of $2.50. Orders received now. We shall offer liberal induce-
ments to clubs or buyers in quantity of this book.
