De Prins, W.: Diksmuidelaan 176, B-2600 Antwerpen (willy.deprins@village.uunet.be).
Catalogue of the Lepidoptera of Belgium thuis net na Gelechia sororculella

Noorwegen, Zweden, Finland, Denemarken, Rusland, Estland, Letland, Polen,
Tsjechië, Slowakije, Duitsland, Nederland, Groot-Brittannië, Luxemburg,
Frankrijk, Zwitserland, Oostenrijk, Hongarije en Roemenië (Elsner, Huemer &
Tokar 1999: 36; Karsholt & Riedl 1996: 1 1 1).
Huemer & Tokar 1999: 36; Huemer & Karsholt 1999: 113). De soort wordt
Phegea 29 (1) (1.III.2001): 2
vooral aangetroffen in vochtige biotopen, bosranden, loofbossen op rivieroevers
e.d.
Dankwoord
waarvoor mijn hartelijke dank.

serieuze sprong voorwaarts gekend.

Enolmis acanthella , a new species for Central Europe
(Lepidoptera: Scythrididae)
Marcel Hellers
Abstract. Enolmis acanthella (Godart, 1824), a species known from SW Europe and NW
Africa, is spreading its distribution area. It has first been sighted in 1988 in France near Nancy.
Since 1991 it regularly occurs in a western suburb of the city of Luxembourg. In 1998, a new
locality in the south-eastem part of Luxembourg has been discovered, in 1999, it has been
collected in Saarland (D), and in 2000 in the south of Luxembourg. According to the literature,
the First instars feed on lichens, which could explain such a spreading.
In 1998

Introduction
During the last years, there were several records in and around the Grand-
Duchy of Luxembourg of a species, the area of which was until now presumed
to be restricted to SW Europe and NW Africa (Bengtsson 1997: 170). This taxon
is Enolmis acanthella (Godart, 1824), a conspicuously marked representative of
the Scythrididae with a wingspan varying from 12 to 19 mm.
Imago
There is no difference in the wing pattem of the specimens originating from
Central Europe as compared to those collected by the author in the Pyrenees
Phegea 29 (1) (1. III. 2001): 5
(France, Pyrénées-Orientales) and in the north of Spain (León). The markings
are the same, but most of the Southern European specimens are larger than those
from Central Europe. Two <S specimens were dissected, and there were no
relevant differences as compared to the figure given by Bengtsson (1997: 255).
Bengtsson, to whom the author sent the genitalia for confirmation,
acknowledged the species being Enolmis accmthella (Godart, 1 824).
Distribution
E. acanthella occurs in SW Europe and NW Africa (Spuler 1910: 441,
Bengtsson 1997: 170). Checking the collection of Michel Martin (Nancy, F), the
author discovered 2 specimens of E. acanthella from the same site: "fin juillet
1988, Villers-lès-Nancy", which is a suburb of Nancy, Département Meurthe-et-
Moselle (F).
From 27.VL1991 onwards, the species is mentioned from the Grand-Duchy
of Luxembourg, from Bertrange, a western suburb of the city of Luxembourg.
Romain Schoos, Bertrange (L), who runs a light trap in his garden, confirmed to
the author having got E. acanthella in numbers every year since its First
appearance. These observations cover a time-span from 4. VI until 5. VIII.
Bengtsson (1997: 170) reports a flight period from mid-May to the end of
September.
On 21. VII. 1998, Mare Meyer (Natural History Museum, L) got 2 specimens
in a light trap near Erpeldange/Bous, in the south-west of Luxembourg.
Andreas Wemo (Nunkirchen, D) confirmed to the author the capture of E.
acanthella on 25. IX. 1999 near Nennig, Saarland (D). This is the First record of
this species in Germany (Gaedike & Heinicke 1999).
On 17. VI. 2000, the author himself finally discovered the species near
Dudelange in the south of Luxembourg. At late dusk, retuming after a long and
exhausting day excursion, an adult moth was observed sitting on top of the car.
The specimen, collected because it could no longer be identified in the field, was
recognised as being E. acanthella once at home.
The habitats of Enolmis acanthella in Luxembourg
E. acanthella is most common at Bertrange in the central part of
Luxembourg. The light trap which attracted the species, is overviewing gardens
and, beyond these, intensively used meadows, which are irrigated by a small
brook. A railway embankment, along which hedges grow, lies at a distance of
1.000 m. The soil consists mainly of clay. Altitude: 300 m. The landscape in the
neighbourhood is without any rocks or bare soil surfaces. The climate is mild
with moderate precipitation (750-800 mm). In January, the average temperature
is 0°C and in July 16,5-17°C.
Phegea 29 (1) (1 .111.2001): 6
Figure 1: Enolmis acanthella (Godart, 1824), Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, Dudelange, Haardt,
17.VI.2000, leg. M. Hellere.
The only area corresponding to the sites in Southern Europe, where the
author also collected this species, is the locality near Dudelange. It is made up of
a dry wasteground neighbouring a former iron ore exploitation. The plant
associations and the microclimate remind the Southern European localities. All
over the place, there are many bare rocks with a lot of lichens. Nevertheless, E.
acanthella was collected near the urban area.
The locality at Villers-lès-Nancy is also situated just at the city border of
Nancy, but those of Nittel and Erpeldange/Bous are lying some kilometres away
from any agglomeration.
Discussion
According to literature records (Spuler 1910: 441, Cifuentes 1994: 236,
Bengtsson 1997: 170), the Caterpillar of E. acanthella lives on lichens. If this is
correct, the species is, in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, obligatory linked to
lichens growing on walls, roofs and trees, as there are no rocks in the dense
agglomeration of Bertrange.
The author supposes that the species may be living on another plant or even a
garden plant, with which it had been introduced in Central Europe. This could
Phegea 29 (1) ( 1 .111.200 1 ): 7
explain its occurrence in or near human settlements. Further research should
clarify this problem.
Acknowledgments
Many thanks especially to Romain Schoos, but also to Michel Martin, Mare
Meyer and Andreas Wemo for transmitting their records, and to Bengt A.
Bengtsson for checking the genitalia.

1. Li'mnos
Introduction
The Greek island of Limnos (also known as Lemnos) lies in the northem part
of the Aegean sea, at a latitude of approximately 40°N and a longitude of
approximately 25°E, and its area is about 470km2. The geological origin of the
island is volcanic, probably dating as far back as the Oligocene period. At
present it consists of a series of rounded hills (highest point: 374m), the majority
Phegea 29 (1) ( 1 .111.200 1): 9
of which occur in its western part, as well as of a number of plains that extend
mostly over its central, Southern and eastem part.
The island is relatively dry, having few and sparsely situated streams. Trees
are to be met with only near these streams, in gullies, in gardens and in some
cultivated areas, while the major part of the island supports a low vegetation,
consisting of a mixture of shrubs and grasses in hilly terrain and mostly of cereal
cultivations and vineyards in the plains. Level areas where cultivations have
been temporarily suspended are as a rule transformed into flowery meadows, but
these areas are few and usually short-lived.
Limnos island also supports a large population of cattle and is being
constantly heavily overgrazed. This condition together with frequent fires,
suggests that a severe degradation of its original flora and fauna may have taken
place over time.
Collecting history
The first published accounts on the lepidoptera of Limnos are by Mathew
(1898), who personally collected there, and by Rebel (1934, 1937), who based
his accounts on the material collected by the herpetologist Franz Wemer. The
first systematic survey of the butterflies of the island is by Koutsaftikis (1970),
who apparently collected the material himself. The most recent and complete
overview of the butterflies of Limnos is by Olivier (1988), who presents his own
collecting records, together with an account of all the records previously
published by others.
Further to this there are works by Bemardi (1961, 1971), by Koutsaftikis
(1973a, 1973b, 1974a, 1974b), by Tauber & Tauber (1968) and by Olivier
(1993) that basically constitute compilations of previously published records on
the skippers and butterflies of Limnos.
List of recorded species
The list of species now being presented is derived from personal collecting
experiences carried out on 16-18 October 1999, 20-24 April 2000, 1-4 June
2000 and 6-9 September 2000:
Hesperiidae
1 Thymelicus sylvestris (Poda, 1761). Common throughout the island,
primarily in fields and meadows, in June. Previously recorded by Rebel (1934)
and Olivier (1988).
2. Thymelicus acteon (Rottemburg, 1775). Common throughout the island,
primarily in fields and meadows, but also in more xeric situations, in June.
Previously recorded by Olivier (1988).
Phegea 29 (1) (1. III. 2001): 10
3. Gegenes nostrodamus (Fabricius, 1793). Two males captured by the sea,
near Evreókastro, in September. Identification confirmed by the genitalia. A
first record for Li'mnos.
4. Carcharodus a/ceae (Esper, 1 1780]). In fair numbers locally, especially at
edges of fields and meadows and at the bottom of gullies.
Collected in April, June, September and October. Collecting sites: halfway
along the road between Mirina and Kaspakas; Agios Athanasios; near Sardés;
near Agios Dimitrios; near Diapóri. Previously recorded by Koutsaftikis (1970)
and by Olivier (1988).
5. Carcharodus orientalis Reverdin, 1913. In small numbers, particularly
near streams, at edges of fields and meadows and at the bottom of gullies.
Collected in April, June and October. Collecting sites: halfway along road
between Mirina and Kaspakas; near Sardés; near Agios Dimitrios; Agios
Ioannis; halfway along road between Sardés and Dafni; halfway along road
between Thanos and Kondias. Identification confirmed by the genitalia.
Previously recorded by Olivier (1988).
6. Spialia orbifer (Hübner, [1823]). Few specimens recorded, all at the
bottom of gullies, in garrigue situations. Found in April and June. Collecting
sites: halfway along road between Mirina and Kaspakas; near Sardés; halfway
along road between Sardés and Dafni; near Diapóri. Previously recorded by
Olivier (1988).
Papilionidae
7. Papilio machaon Linnaeus, 1758. Found in small numbers over the
whole of the island, being a strong flyer and wanderer. Recorded in April, June
and September. Previously also recorded by Mathew (1898) and Koutsaftikis
(1970).
Pieridae
8. Colias crocea (Fourcroy, 1785). Found in fair numbers everywhere.
Recorded in April, June and October. Previously recorded by Mathew (1898),
Koutsaftikis (1970) and Olivier (1988).
9. Euchloe ausonia (Hübner, [1804]). Recorded as common in April (first
brood) and in small numbers in June (second brood), mostly in fields, flowery
meadows and waste places. Collecting sites: halfway along road between Mirina
and Kaspakas; Agios Athanasios; near Sardés; near Agios Dimitrios. Previously
recorded by Olivier (1988) as E. simplonia (Freyer, 1829) [sic!].
10. Aporia crataegi (Linnaeus, 1758). Wom specimens recorded in small
numbers in June, especially over fields and meadows as well as in orchards.

Discussion
The number of taxa reported here is relatively small when compared to that
of the Greek mainland and this should be attributed to the island’s small land
mass, its geographic isolation, its lack of habitat diversity, its poor flora and its
biotope destruction through overgrazing and frequent fires. It is of interest to
note that all resident taxa are to be found also on the Greek mainland and that no
single one of them is exclusively of Asia Minor origin. Species having a vast
distribution on the other islands of the Aegean, such as Iphiclides podalirius
(Linnaeus, 1758), Gonepteryx cleopatra (Linnaeus, 1767) and Hipparchia
senthes (Fruhstorfer, 1908), were found to be totally absent from Limnos.
Taxa not noticed by the present author, but recorded previously by others
include the following:
Lycaenidae: Callophrys rubi (Linnaeus, 1758) and Cupido osiris (Meigen,
1829), both recorded by Olivier (1988).
Nymphalidae: Coenonympha pamphilus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Lasiommata
maera (Linnaeus, 1758), both recorded by Koutsaftikis (1970).
The presence of C. pamphilus on Limnos island is seriously doubted both by
Olivier (1988) and the present author, as, despite extensive search for it at
various times of the warm season, the butterfly was nowhere to be found. The
same also applies to maera , but in this particular instance the dark spring form of
the closely related and relatively abundant megera may have been mistaken for it
on the wing by Koutsaftikis.
2. Santorini
During a recent visit to this island between 1 and 4 September 2000, two
specimens (a male and a female), of a Gegenes species were captured while
feeding on the flowers of Lantana bushes in the town of Fira, at an altitude of
about 300m. These were eventually dissected and their genitalia showed them to
be Gegenes pumilio (Hoffmansegg, 1804), a First record of this taxon for
Santorini island (cf. Coutsis 1992, 1994, 1996).
3. Siros
This island was visited between 28 September and 2 October 2000 and
despite the almost total absence of butterflies there, two species, Lampides
boeticus (Linnaeus, 1767) and Leptotes pirithous , both constituting new
additions to the island’s fauna (cf. Coutsis 1994, 1996), were recorded in very
limited numbers near Posidonia.

Hellmann, F., Brockmann, E. & Kristall, Ph. M.: I Macrolepidotteri della Valle d’Aosta.
17,5 x 24,5 cm, 284 p., 1 kleurenplaat, 2 kaarten, gebonden 1999, Museo Regionale di Scienze
Naturali, 1-1 1010 Saint-Pierre (Aosta), Italy.

vleermuizen voorkomen. De soortenlijst gaat van prokaryoten (o.a. Bacillus spp.) over protisten (o.a.
Plathelminthes, Nemathelmintia (met o.a.

Abstract: Interesting observations of Lepidoptera in Greece
In the period of 28 May to 9 June 2000 moths were observed in several Greek localities with
artificial light. Localities visited are Dodoni (Ioanina), the region of Meteora (Trikala), Litohóri
and Leptokaria near Mt. Olympos (Pieria) and the Katara Pass (Ioanina). A list of the observed
species is presented.

heesters, o.a. bloeiende meidoorn ( Crataegus ). 's Avonds daalde de
temperatuur tot ongeveer 15°C.

Enkele notities over de meest interessante waargenomen
soorten
Voor systematiek en nomenclatuur werd Karsholt & Razowski (1996)
gevolgd.
Paradrymonia vittata (Staudinger, 1892): Volgens Rougeot & Viette (1978)
massaal in eikenbossen.
Grammodes bifasciata (Petagna, 1787): volgens Hacker (1989) vooral
voorkomende Shargacucullia- soort. De rups leeft op Scrophularia- soorten,
vooral S. canina (Ronkay & Ronkay 1994).

Several specimens of Hyponephele narica (Hübner, [1813]) were collected in
West Kazakhstan, 50 km E of Zhanaozen Sands, 8 km E of Senek village, 19-
20.V.2000, leg. V. Karalius & J. Miatleuski. One of these specimens showed
both male and female features.
A perfectly preserved gynandromorphous specimen is compared with the
other butterflies caught at the same time in the same locality (see plate 1). The
right side of the gynandromorph (forewing length 1 7 mm) has features
characteristic for a male, i.e. a wide basal black band of androconial scales and a
black apical dot, which is a little larger than in normal male specimens, but
slightly smaller than the similar dot on the left forewing. The lower part of the
wing is a little less contrasting than in normal specimens. The left forewing
(length 19 mm) has features that are characteristic for the female. The apical dot
is a little larger than in normal females. In the lower wing corner, there are
several black scales. The lower part of the wing is identical to the wing of a
normal female. However, the marginal broken black line is much more distinct.
While comparing various specimens of Hyponephele narica , it became
obvious that the only permanent feature characteristic for the male is a large
band of androconial black scales, while the size of the apical dot in the male is
very variable. Out of 10 individuals 2 had an apical dot which is twice as small
as in most specimens.
In the lower wing corner, only 1 male out of 10 possessed a distinct dotted
spot. This spot is more peculiar to females. The specimens (male and female)
figured by Tuzov et al. (1997: pl. 59) lack this spot in the lower corner of the
forewings. The female specimen figured by Samodurov et al. (2000) possesses
Phegea 29 (1) (1 .111.2001): 33
that spot (compare with figure 3 of the present publication). This indicates thai
this spot is not characteristic at all to this species.

Hétérocères du Brabant. Deuxième contribution a la
liste des Lépidoptères de cette province (Lepidoptera)
R. H. Nyst
Abstract. Heterocera of Brabant. Second contribution to the Lepidoptera list of this
province (Lepidoptera)
In this paper, many Lepidoptera species are mentioned which were observed in the province of
Brabant, more precisely at Ottignies.
Key words: Belgium - Brabant - Lepidoptera - faunistics.
colonne Brabant. Toutes mes captures sont d'ailleurs postérieures a 1986.
