A new species of the genus Thevenetimyia (Diptera:
Bombyliidae, Ecliminae) from Iran with notes about
the male of Thevenetimyia hirta
Jozef Dils
Abstract. A new species in the genus Thevenetimyia is described from Iran. Differential
characters of the sexual dimorphism in Theventimyia hirta (Loew, 1876) are discussed and a key
to the Palaearctic Thevenetimyia species is provided.

Thevenetimyia is a predominantly Nearctic genus of the subfamily Ecliminae
which seems to be rather elusive, never being collected in great numbers in the
Palaearctic region. Diagnostic differences between the genera Eclimus and
Thevenetimyia are clearly defmed by Hall (1969). To date only three species of
the subgenus Thevenetimyia , T hirta (Loew, 1876), T quedenfeldti Engel, 1885
and T. zerrinae Hasbenli, 2005 are known from the Palaearctic region.

The single male specimen described here was collected by Dr. Joachim
Ziegler in the Khorassan Province in north-east Iran. With only one specimen
available for study, and given the distinctiveness of this species within the
Palaearctic, it was decided not to dissect it. The holotype will be placed in the
Museum für Naturkunde, Humboldt-Universitat, Berlin, Germany (ZMHB).
Description
Diagnosis: The combination of hyaline wings, hairy flagella and yellow
lateral margins of the tergites forming a continuous yellow line, distinguish this
species from all other known Palaearctic Thevenetimyia.
Material examined: Holotype cJ: Asadli (Kuh-e Aladag) S of Bojnurd

Etymology: The species in named after Dr. Joachim Ziegler of the ZMHB
Museum für Naturkunde, Humboldt-Universitat, Berlin, Germany who collected
the holotype.
Thevenetimyia hirta (Loew, 1876)
In his paper, Hall (1969) mentioned that Loew (1876) and Paramonow
(1931) described a male and Engel (1932) the female of this species. I have
studied the holotype in the Museum für Naturkunde, Humboldt-Universitat,
Berlin, Germany, and it tumed out to be a female as welf Therefore Loew
described the female instead of the male, and this description, together with the
mistake in gender, was copied by Paramonow (1931).
Furthermore, Hall (1969) wrote that he has seen one male and one female of
this species, both from Greece, Peloponnese, without dates and they seem to
have both reddish-yellow hairs. The male of Thevenetimyia hirta (fig. 6) is, to
my knowledge, not described yet.
My wife and I have collected this species (2$ and 4$) in Greece on Mt.
Gerania, Atika, in 2007. Also in Greece, two male specimens were collected in
2004 by H. Vandenheuvel at Kamena Vourla, Phtiotis. All females, collected at
the First location had, as described by Loew, reddish-yellow hairs and an
admixture of Fine elongated scales of the same colour on occiput, humeral calli,
scutellum and sides of the abdomen (Fig. 7). All the males so far collected have
only black hairs on occiput, humeral calli, scutellum and sides of the abdomen
without any admixture of scales. The eyes of the male are separated by the width
of the occelar tubercle, in the female by twice the distance of the width of the
tubercle.
Also Hall (1969) has misidentiFied females for males, because he mentions
that both the specimens he has seen, have a reddish-yellow pile on the occiput,
humeral calli, and sides of the abdomen (scutellum?). The mesonotum of the
male specimens I have studied have rows of cones (murications), as found in
other species of Thevenetimyia. In Hall’s (1969) paper it is not clear if one of the
specimens he studied had this feature.
Apart from the sexual characters and more approximated eyes, the male
differs from the female only in the absence of the reddish-yellow hairs and
scales.

Engel (1932) and Hall (1969) both mentioned that the specimen was
collected on the Peloponnese. However, this type specimen was collected by
Krüper in Akaman, the present Etoloakamania. This is not on the Peloponnese,
but in mainland Greece. None of the specimens I have seen thus far, originated
from the Peloponnese.

(Coleoptera)
Willy Troukens
Abstract. New and interesting discoveries of Tenebrionidae and Serropalpidae at the
westside of Brussels, Belgium (Coleoptera).
Since 2004 four remarkable species were found at the westside of Brussels: both Bolitophagus
reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1767) and Latheticus oryzae Waterhouse, 1880 in a light trap, Tetratoma
fungorum Fabricius, 1790 under mouldy bark of a felled oak, and Conopalpus testaceus (Olivier,
1790) in an oak-tree ( Quercus robur).

Hieronder volgen enkele
beschouwingen over hun vondst en hun levenswijze. Voor de nomenclatuur
werd de publicatie gevolgd van Kaszab (1969: 196-213, 329-264).
Tenebrionidae
41 in België (Libbrecht 1988: 1-56).

1. Bolitophagus reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1767) (fig. 1)
andere plaatsen opduiken. Volgens Möller et al. (2006: 166) moet men hiervoor
In
elkaar. De Melandryidae worden in Midden-Europa vertegenwoordigd door 40
soorten, onderverdeeld in 18 geslachten (Kaszab 1969: 201-213).
3. Tetratoma fungorum Fabricius, 1790 (fig. 3)
(. Malus , Juglans) (Keer 1930: 811).
Men rekent hem daarom
Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 129
Fig. 3. Vindplaatsen van Tetratoma fungorum Fabricius, 1790 in België.
Fig. 4.

In
On p. 40 it is
said that G. dercetis is restricted to SE Chinese (sic). There are also quite some mistakes in
conjugations (e.g. p. 132: "In N Fennoscanida Furcula bifida lype occur" (sic).
delen zullen verschijnen.

Geometridae meestal erg stiefmoederlijk behandeld.
duidelijk kaartje weergegeven.

insecten in lichtvallen.

New data regarding the geographical distribution of
Pseudochazara graeca in Greece, with notes about its
wing coloration, the status of its ssp. coutsisi
(= zagoriensis ), as well as the supposed correlation
between the HW underside ground colour and the
geological character of the habitat in both P. graeca
and Hyponephele lycaon (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae,
Satyrinae)
Hristos T. Anastassiu , John G. Coutsis & Nikos Ghavalas
Abstract. Several colonies of Pseudochazara graeca (Staudinger, 1870) are reported for the
first time from north-central Greece, geographically connecting the hitherto known as disjunct
northem and Southern populations of this species, and clearly showing that the wing coloration
exhibits a clinal variation from north to south, casting doubt about the validity of ssp. coutsisi
Brown, 1977 (= zagoriensis Aussem, 1978). The generally held notion regarding Satyrinae, and
as far as Europe is concemed, especially regarding the genera Hipparchia, Pseudochazara and
Hyponephele , that the HW underside ground colour adapts to the geological character of the
habitat by mimicking the colour of rock surfaces, is shown to be inapplicable both to P. graeca,
as well as to Hyponephele lycaon (Rottemburg, 1775).
Hyponephele lycaon (Rottemburg, 1775).

Introduction
The geographical distribution of Pseudochazara graeca (Staudinger, 1870) is
characterized by the existence of several, relatively isolated colonies, occurring
on numerous Greek mountains. Since the taxon’s official elevation to species
status by Brown (1976) [it was already treated as such in Higgins & Riley
(1970), but without due explanation], no less than four additional subspecies
have been described in literature: coutsisi Brown, 1977; zagoriensis Aussem,
1978; apollo Gross, 1978; pelops Gross, 1978. This classification was based on
differences in wing colour and markings. Tolman & Lewington (1997) formally
recognized only two distinct population entities, one consisting of colonies
inhabiting Southern and south-central Greece, namely the regions of
Pelopónnisos and Sterea Ellas, and another inhabiting north-westem Greece, i.e.
Ipiros and southwestem Makedonia, and treated coutsisi as a form rather than a
ssp. of graeca. An additional record (requiring confirmation) pertained to Mt.
Ólimbos on the Makedonia/Thessalia border (Tolman & Lewington 1997).
Finally, the species was also allegedly recorded from the Former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia (F.Y.R.O.M.), in particular Mt. Pelister (Schaider &
Jaksic 1988, Tolman & Lewington 1997, Lafranchis 2004), which is the
northem extension of the Greek Mt. Vamüs, where, however, its occurrence has
never been ascertained, despite several searches by the authors.
Repeated attempts to discover additional colonies in north-central Greece
(northem Sterea Ellas and Thessalia) had so far been unsuccessful, hence the
two major populations were considered alienated from each other. On the basis
of isolation and in conjunction with differences in wing coloration, both upper-
and underside, it had been generally accepted that the taxon was represented by
two different subspecies: the southem, light-colored, nominate ssp. graeca (Figs.
1, 2, 7, 8) and the northwestem, dark-colored ssp. coutsisi ( = zagoriensis) (Figs.
5, 6, 11, 12). Brown (1977) emphasizes: "It remains unclear as to where the
boundary between these two subspecies exists and its nature is entirely
unknown". This issue remained unresolved for three decades. However, during
an entomological expedition by the First author in the Agrafa Mts and the
southem Pindos mountain range (both in north-central Greece) in late July/early
August 2008, and after a thorough and tedious search, six separate colonies were
discovered, bridging over the geographical gap between the hitherto known two
population distribution areas.
Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 136
Moreover, the wing coloration of the specimens of the newly discovered
colonies (Figs. 3, 4, 9, 10) was found to be intermediate between that of ssp.
graeca and of ssp. coutsisi , clearly suggesting that a character cline is involved
here, and that coutsisi cannot anymore be defined as a valid subspecies, but
instead rather should be treated as an extreme form that has no taxonomie and
nomenclatural significance. Further to this, a single male specimen (Figs. 13, 16)
captured by the second author in "coutsisi" territory is colored in the graeca
way, further suggesting that the former is but a colour form of the latter.
Hitherto known localities for Pseudochazara graeca from
Southern and south-central Greece
The Southern and south-central colonies of P. graeca (henceforth referred to
as the Southern population) are very widely distributed, being found over almost
all major mountains in the area (Fig. 19). Colonies have been recorded from
Pelopónnisos, Southern Greece (Mts. Taiyetos, Pamon, Ménalo, Artemisio,
Ziria, Helmós, Erimanthos, and Panahaikó), from Évvia island (Mt. Dirfis), and
from Sterea Ellas, south-central Greece (Mts. Elikón, Iti, Pamassós, Gióna,
Vardüsia, Timfristós, Kaliaküda, Oxia, and Panetolikó).
Habitat
The butterfly is generally found on dry, rocky ground and at altitudes ranging
from approximately 1600 to about 2000 m (Fig. 20). Sometimes it is also found
in rocky clearings inside the upper altitudinal limit of coniferous forests.
Wing coloration in Southern population
On the whole it may be said that the butterflies in this area are generally
characterized by the light coloring of their wings both on upper- and underside
(Figs. 1, 2, 7, 8). Of course, minor wing character variation does occur from
mountain to mountain, but in our view this does not justify the naming of
separate subspecies, for if indeed it does, then there should be a ssp. named for
every single mountain in the area. Therefore the action taken by Gross (1978) in
describing two new subspecies, namely apollo (TL Mt. Pamassós) and pelops
(TL Mt. Ménalo) does not seem to us as being justifiable, and thus we are
considering both names as being synonyms of graeca , agreeing at the same time
with Tolman & Lewington (1997) who acted similarly.
Hitherto known localities for Pseudochazara graeca from
north-western Greece
The north-western colonies of P. graeca (henceforth referred to as the
northem population) are likewise scattered over several mountains, but rather in
a more restricted way than are their Southern counterparts (Fig. 19). The species
has been recorded from Ipiros (Mts. Tzoumérka, Lakmos, Timfi, Mitsikéli,
Smólikas, and Katara Pass), as well as from Makedonia (Mt. Vasilitsa).

Habitat
Brown (1977) claimed that the butterfly "...flies over rough clearings in
coniferous forests at altitudes of 1400 m to 1650 m. This is rather different from
the habitat of P. g. graeca , which favours open scree slopes". In our opinion
Brown’ s first paragraph holds true for both the northem and, as already stated,
the Southern population of graeca , provided the coniferous forest reaches its
highest altitudinal limit, which is also the suitable altitude for graeca. Otherwise
in almost all other instances, and for both the northem as well as the Southern
population, the butterfly is predominantly found on dry, rocky ground at
altitudes ranging from about 1600 to about 2000 m (Fig. 21).
Wing coloration in northem population
The northem population butterflies are in general much darker than the
Southern ones, the darkest of all being found on Mts. Timfi and Smólikas, i.e. at
the northemmost limit of their range. Unh is typically dark reddish-brown, in
contrast with the light greyish-brown hue of southem population specimens
(Figs.5,6, 11, 12).
Mt. Olimbos record
Specimens recorded from Mt. Olimbos (Tolman & Lewington 1997), which
is geographically detached from both aforementioned distribution areas (Fig.
19), are unknown to the authors and nothing can be said about their wing
coloration, as there is no published information about it.
Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 143
F.Y.R. of Macedonia record
Reported from Mt. Pelister by Schaider & Jaksic (1988) (Fig. 19), but the
figured specimens are from Katara Pass in northwestem Greece, and hence no
conclusion can be drawn about the status of this, unconfirmed, population.
New records from north-central Greece
The by the First author recently discovered population of Pseudochazara
graeca from north-central Greece (henceforth referred to as the central
population) encompasses at least six colonies that are distributed both in the
Agrafa Mts (Morforrahi, Kópsi, Zigurolivado, Karava), as well as in the
Aspropótamos area of the south Pindos range (Avgó, Tringia) (Fig. 19).
Habitat
The typical habitat is, as for the northem and Southern populations, dry,
rocky ground, at altitudes ranging between 1600 and 1900 m (Fig. 22).
Wing coloration in central population
After an examination of a large number of set specimens, it was found that
their coloration is, on average, intermediate, between that of the dark northem
population and the light southem one (Figs. 3, 4, 9, 10).
Conclusions
In Fig. 19 it is clearly shown for the First time that the geographical
distribution of P. graeca in Greece demonstrates no actual discontinuities, other
than those caused by the lowlands, separating the hosting mountains.
Uninterrupted distribution, along with clinal colour variation, sustained by the
recently captured specimens in north-central Greece, implies that division of the
taxon into two subspecies is inappropriate, and that the various wing colour
schemes represent no more than forms.
Underside wing coloration versus geological character of
habitat
It is generally accepted that the underside, cryptic coloration of butterflies
habitually sitting on the ground, largely depends on the geological character of
the habitat. In their discussion on Pseudochazara graeca , Tolman & Lewington
(1997) claim: "Small but systematic local variation in size and coloration, esp.
unh, appears to be due to ecological adaptation to the geological character of the
habitat". Similar comments are found in Weiss (1980). Our experience with
Greek mountains, however, does not necessarily support this assertion. The
butterfly coloration (Figs. 7-12, 16) does not always follow the corresponding
variation of the rock and soil hue above the tree line, in areas located within the
range of Pseudochazara graeca. For instance, the environment on Mt.
Zigurolivado (Fig. 22) is much more reddish-brown and darker than on Mt.
Lakmos (Fig. 21), however, as discussed earlier, the coloration of the
Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 144
corresponding butterfly populations follows the opposite trend (much darker and
more reddish on Lakmos). Furthermore, the colour of the rocks on Mt. Taiyetos
(Fig. 20), i.e. at the southemmost tip of the butterfly’s range, is not appreciably
different from that on Mt. Lakmos (Fig. 21), but the corresponding butterflies
have a totally different underside; light and greyish on the former, dark and
reddish-brown on the latter.
Similar observations have also been made by the authors for Hyponephele
lycaon (Kühn, 1774). The population from Mt. Pangéo (north-eastem Greece)
has a light bluish-grey HW underside (Fig. 18) while the one from Mt.Taiyetos
has a dark brownish-grey one (Fig. 17), in spite of the fact that both mountains
are characterized by their similar, whitish-grey limestone rocks.

Localized, Very rare, Rare, Common, Very common".
Near threatened, Least concern, Not evaluated, Data deficiënt".

Opmerkelijke dagvlindersoorten in West-Vlaanderen
anno 2008 (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera)
door de Zuid-West- Vlaamse Vlinder Kring (Z.W.V.V.K.)
(Sylvain Cuvelier, Jori Degrande, Luc Merveillie, Stef Spruytte en Jacques
Vervaeke)
Abstract. Remarkable records of butterflies from the province of West-Flanders in 2008

Inleiding

In
In

Gijzelbrechtegem.
In 2008

Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 150
en ook naar het Spaanse vasteland. Tijdens de daaropvolgende j aren merkte men
zekere waarnemingen gemeld (Daniël Haubreux, mondelinge mededeling).

Introduction
Most people will be familiar with the small flies inhabiting the less well-
maintained sanitary facilities in such places as petrol stations and camping sites,
where the larvae breed in the drains.
A few cosmopolitan species of moth flies (Psychodidae), also known as drain
flies or filter flies, are well adapted to this kind of habitats. When they occur in
small numbers, moth flies will mostly remain unnoticed. In buildings with a
malfunctioning sewage system, they can occur massively. While these non-
biting moth flies of the subfamily Psychodinae do not carry any known disease,
when present in abundance they can pose a hygienic problem, especially in
hospitals (Verheggen et al. 2008). In cases of a real infestation, inhaling fme
particles of the scale-like hairs that detach from living and dead insects can
cause respiratory problems. Some past studies have also shown the possibility
for such flies to carry bacterial germs. In November 2006, a hospital in the
Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 153
Netherlands had to cancel surgical operations for two days because moth flies —
of an unidentified species — were found in the operation rooms (Anonymous
2006).
In such situations the moth flies are typically 'controlled', but not identified to
species level. As a result, a very common and photogenic species, Clogmia
albipunctata (Williston, 1893), is still missing from the Belgian species list.
Taxonomy
The taxonomie history of Psychodidae is complex, having resulted in many
synonyms for the same species. Clogmia albipunctata was first described in
1893 by Williston, under the name Psychoda albipunctata. This species became
the type species of the genus Clogmia Enderlein 1937, but for a long time
specialists considered Clogmia to be a synonym of Telmatoscopus Eaton 1904.
Vaillant placed most Clogmia species, including this one, in a newly defined
genus Telmatoscopus Vaillant 1972.
The current situation is that in much of the medical, toxicological and
ecological literature the species is referred to as Telmatoscopus albipunctatus,
whereas taxonomists typically adhere to name Clogmia albipunctata. The latter
is the valid name according to Fauna Europaea (Wagner 2004), though the
website yields C. albipunctat-us , with an incorrect ending for the grammatical
gender. In addition, this cosmopolitan species has been described independently
several times, so that a number of less commonly used synonyms exist. More
taxonomie details are provided by Vaillant (1972: 52), Wagner (2004) and
Ibanez-Bemal (2008).
Distribution in Europe
Vaillant (1971: 2) defines the distribution of C. albipunctata as the world-
wide belt between 40° Southern and 42° northem latitude. However, the species
currently occurs much further northward in Europe, at least in synanthropic
habitats. In 1993 it was found for the first time in Germany, in a treatment
facility for domestic waste close to Berlin (Wemer 1997). Fauna Europaea
(Wagner 2004) mentions the species as occurring in Germany, France, Spain,
Italy and Slovenia, as well as the Canary Islands, Madeira and Sardinia. Jezek &
Goutner (1995) list the species for Greece. We have recently published on the
occurrence of C. albipunctata in the Netherlands (Boumans 2009). There can be
no doubt that C. albipunctata is now common all over Europe, with the possible
exception of the British Isles and Scandinavia.
Observations in Belgium
In early spring 2007, patients of the psychiatry department of CHU
Brugmann, a suburban hospital in Brussels, noted the presence of "little worms"
in a bathroom. A few weeks later "small flies" were seen in another care unit.
These larvae and flies were sent to the Functional and Evolutionary Entomology
Department of the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, University of Liège, where they
were identified as moth flies (Verheggen et al. 2008). In February 2009, the first
Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 154
author identified a sample of fifteen adults, including five males, as belonging to
the species C. albipunctata (fig. 2). The identification was based on the
identification key, descriptions and drawings of Vaillant (1971, 1972) and
Ibanez-Bemal (2008), as well as comparison with Dutch specimens identified by
the Psychodidae specialist Prof. Rüdiger Wagner (Boumans 2009).

In addition to these collected specimens, browsing the internet yielded
several pictures of this pretty moth fly taken in Belgium. These are listed in
Table 1. So far, the earliest documentation of C. albipunctata from Belgium
dates from August 2004.
The observations of C. albipunctata in Belgium were all done in or around
buildings. This concurs with the observations from the Netherlands, where the
species was found in kitchens, toilets and bathrooms, and in a compost heap
(Boumans 2009).

Recognition
Psychodidae have long hairs (macrotrichia) on the wing veins, the legs and
the body. In many species the wings have an attractive pattem of colours and
markings. It seems likely that several species can be recognized by the wing
pattem, but the required documentation for this purpose, such as reliably
identified colour pictures, is largely lacking.
The trichia play almost no role in the identification keys for Psychodidae.
During their short life, the adult moth flies tend to loose these, and the wing
pattem fades. Moreover it is impossible to collect and prepare the animals
without damaging the trichia. Collections are usually kept in ethanol, which
makes the trichia detach, exposing other characters for identification, notably the
genital appendages. Larvae and depilated adults of C. albipunctata can be
identified under a binocular with the keys of Vaillant (1971, 1972), who uses the
genus name Telmatoscopus for this species. Vaillant provides many drawings of
details; besides those the additional description and drawings of Ibanez-Bemal
(2008) are helpful.
Although the identification of moth flies generally requires making
microscope preparations, the habitus of C. albipunctata is sufficiently
characteristic to recognize the species from a clear photograph. This holds
particularly if the picture was taken in Europe, where there are no similar-
looking species, and in its typical habitat of sewage drains, bathrooms and the
like. For this purpose we provide, as an addition to the literature sources cited, a
description of the habitus of C. albipunctata.
Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 156
Clogmia albipunctata is a large moth fly of mostly grey or dark brown
colour. The wings have conspicuous white spots and the ends of the longitudinal
veins (Fig. 1). At about half the length of the wing there is a second row of white
spots arranged in a V-shape with the angle of the V pointing distally.
At about one third of the wing length from the base, at the base of veins R2
and M2 (just beyond the forks R2-3 and Ml -2), there are two tufts of trichia that
look like dark or dark-and-white spots. The tufts are formed by trichia pointing
towards each other: the partly white trichia on the basal side are directed distally,
the dark trichia on the distal side point basally. The trichia on the basal portion
of vein R2-3, before the fork, are of a reddish brown colour.
Other moth flies associated with the same type of anthropogenic habitats are
Tinearia alternata (Say, 1824), Psychoda cinerea Banks, 1894, P. albipennis
Zetterstedt, 1850 and P. parthenogenetica Tonnoir, 1940 (cf. Wemer 1997). The
latter two species are treated as synonyms in some references, but not in others.
Psychoda albipennis is a sexual species with fifteen antennal segments, whereas
P. parthenogenetica is a triploid parthenogenetic lineage (Milrouse 1942,
Troiana 1978) with fourteen segments.
When at rest, these other species keep their wings roof-shaped, slantwise
over the abdomen whereas C. albipunctata keeps its wings in a horizontal plane.
Clogmia albipunctata is the larger and darker species. lts wings are more
rounded. The angle of the wing apex is wider than 90°, as against some 70° in T.
alternata and P. cinerea and even less in the other species. The illustrations in
Ibanez-Bemal (2008) are helpful for the comparison of C. albipunctata , P.
cinerea and T. alternata.
Biology
Clogmia albipunctata is one of the best known Psychodidae. The larvae
develop in shallow, polluted water containers or wet organic material and slime,
using their mandibles to shred organic material. According to Vaillant (1971),
development time from egg to adult is about seventeen days, and adults live
about ten days, depending on the temperature. In the laboratory at 22° C the
larval stage takes sixteen to seventeen, and the pupal stage five to six days
(Sehgal et al. 1977). Sebastiani (1978) describes the courtship and sexual
behaviour: Newly emerged adults become sexually mature in about nine hours,
and both sexes can mate and reproduce with more than one other individual. A
female lays 200 to 300 eggs, which hatch in a few days (Sehgal et al. 1977,
Simöes et al. 1977, Sebastiani 1978). Thus a single pair can produce thousands
of offspring in a few months.
In tropical and temperate regions, the species occurs in natural habitats in
shallow pools and in rot holes in trees (Jenkins & Carpenter 1946, Paradise
2004, Harlan & Paradise 2006, Burkhart et al. 2007, Englund et al. 2007). In
addition it is often found in sewage treatment plants (e.g. Heilprin et al. 2002,
Hribar et al. 2004). It can be a nuisance in buildings, and especially in hospitals
Phegea 37 (4) (01.XII.2009): 157
(Verheggen et al. 2008). While not classical myasis agents, larvae occasionally
breed in the body orifices of patients living under poor hygienic conditions
(Nevill et al. 1 969, Hyun et al. 2004, Tu et al. 2007).
Finally, C. albipunctata is appreciated as model species that is easily reared
in laboratories. It is used in toxicological experiments, and in evolutionary
developmental research, e.g. on embryonic segmentation processes in lower
Diptera (e.g. Rohr et al. 1999).
Discussion
In a few months’ time, Boumans (2009) collected 26 observations of C.
albipunctata in the Netherlands, most of these by browsing internet forums and
asking acquainted dipterists and nature photographers. While relatively few
photographers pay attention to moth flies, about a quarter of the original Dutch
and Belgian pictures published on the internet show C. albipunctata. (On the
Dutch naturalists’ website waameming.nl, out of the 42 observations of
Psychodidae which were accompanied by photos in January 2009, 1 1 showed
this species.) Together with the six observations now documented for Belgium,
this shows that the species must now be very common in both countries.
If we assume that the distribution area given by Valiant (1971) was
approximately accurate in the 1970s, C. albipunctata must have spread into
north-westem Europe at some time during the past few decades. There are some
indications that it reached Belgium and the Netherlands only a few years ago and
became widespread in a short time. The fïrst Belgian observation we know of is
from 2004; the first Dutch one from 2005. Moreover, the Dutch observations are
concentrated in the southem half of the country. On the other hand, the overall
number of records of moth fly species from these countries is very small, and we
owe many documented cases to the recent popularity of digital photography.
There are very few experts working on non-biting Psychodidae, and the
literature on this group is difficult to access. Therefore, C. albipunctata may well
have gone unnoticed for a longer period.
Humans can easily disperse synanthropic moth flies like Clogmia over long
distances with garbage or small water containers like car tyres. The underground
sewage system may aid local dispersal. Altematively, the species may spread on
its own during the summers, when it also breeds outdoors. More observation
data, including historical records, are needed to establish when the range
expansion took place and what the principal mode of dispersal is in Europe. It
would be interesting to know, for instance, whether it also breeds in natural
habitats like tree holes in this part of the world, and whether larvae can survive
the winter outdoors. A final interesting question is whether C. albipunctata
larvae co-occur with other moth fly species in the same substrate, or perhaps
tend to replace other species like T. alternata and P. albipennis.

Request
In order to arrivé at a better picture of the actual distribution of C.
albipunctata and its competition with other moth fly species in synanthropic
habitats, we welcome additional data from the Benelux: Psychodidae pictures
and specimens collected from inside and round buildings, if possible with a
description of the possible substrate of the larvae. These can be sent to L.
Boumans; specimens are best sent in small Eppendorf vials with 75% ethanol.
