FOREWORD
Every lamp must be lit and every star set to glow. The same is true with people —
each of us must have a life lighter. Here at "T. C", some of us have polished and
lighted our lamps, and now they glow with profuse manifestations of outstanding
achievements in various fields of endeavor. Some of us will strive to attain more
than our radiant lamps, our destinations being the sun, the stars, and the moon. We
know that in the future years a few of us might reach these goals; others of us will
have to find consolation through the capture of a few clouds; and some of us will find
satisfaction by merely polishing our lamps and letting them emanate their light
in ultimate splendor. The pages in this, the Yearbook of 1953, will serve to bring back
recollections of our start to attain our goals. We will always be profoundly grateful
to "T. C." for providing us with the essential instructions and materials by which we
were able to polish and light our lamps. May they send forth their glorious rays
universally so that we may enlighten the hearts and minds of those whom we are
destined to encounter.
DEDICATION
With great respect and admiration for his patience, resourcefulness, and guidance
do we, the class of '53' dedicate this book to our worthy advisor, Mr. Alphonso R. 'Vick.
May his attempts to find happiness always be successful, and his life a full, prosperous
and happy one.
THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Greetings to the Friends, Alumni, and Students of the Winston-Salem Teachers
College; and sincere congratulations to this year's Senior Class for this 1953 issue of
the "Ram". It is a worthy successor to the talented productions that have preceded it.
The Winston- Salem Teachers College continues its responsibility of preparing
its students for citizenship and service in this time of tension, fears, and anxieties —
this period of transition. In this uncertain age, our task has grown considerably more
difficult — training teachers in even wider academic and co-curricular aaivities than
may be indicated within the covers of this book. Our task includes deep concern with
the full exercise of democracy and with a renewed dedication to the basic principles
of our founders.
The initiative, talent, and skill exhibited in the preparation and organization of
this book is only one example of the maturity and attainment of our youth today.
May they continue to be blessed with opportunity for service and the courage to meet
their responsibilities.
Sincerely,
F. L. ATKINS, President
ADMINISTRATION - LIBRARY BUILDING
HISTORICAL SKETCH
The Winston-Salem Teachers College was founded as the Slater Industrial Academy on
September 28, 1892.
In 1895 the school was recognized by the State of North Carolina, and in 1897 it was
chartered by the State as the Slater Industrial and State Normal School.
In 1925 the General Assembly of North Carolina recognized the school's leadership in
this field; granted the school a new charter, exrending its curricular to four years above high
school; changed its name to Winston-Salem Teachers CoIIe,ee. The College became the first
Negro instimtion in the United States to grant degrees to teach in the elementary grades.
In recent years the State legislamre has granted funds to the institution fot the construaion
and renovation of buildings — namely, Bickett Hall, Atkins Hall, the Health Center, and the
new gymnasium.
In 1892 approximately rwenty-five students vKte enrolled at the school, and there was
one teachei. Today, there are over seven hundred students enrolled at the College, and sixty-
three members comprise the faculty and staff.
Yes! Time really marches on!

"DAS LEBTWOHL"
In September '49 we came,
To be enlightened or to remain the same,
We came in search of that called "EDUCATION",
But ignorant of the issues involved in this proclamation.
We came from the country, the town and the city
Possessed with various intellects — from wise to witty,
We came as "nonetities" to experience this new life,
To the beat of the drum and the tune of the fife.
We came to meet our amicable President,
Who was honest and fair and said just what he meant.
It was evident that he was possessed with a rare acumen.
Because he was interested in where we were going and not where we'd been
We came to meet our magnificent teaching staff,
Destined to give "RIGID" assignments and also a "LAFF."
We came to woik, to study and to make the grade.
Knowing in the end that the achievements would be well paid.
We came to meet husband and wife,
To break hearts and cause much strife,
We came to be blithe and make lasting friends,
Not to be talkative fellows or gossiping young hens.
We came and learned to pay all bills on time.
From $104.00 to one thin dime.
We came and paid for books that were lost,
You see "ANGEL" and "PRECIOUS" paid at all cost.
We came to pass, to float and to flunk.
To "FIGHT" assignments or play games of "tonk,"
We came to walk dormitory halls all night.
Saying we were "HEAVY," knowing we were "LIGHT."
We came to excel in football, basketball, baseball and track.
To test our integrity and say, "NEVER TURN BACK.'
We came to contribute to orchestra, choir and band,
Wanting to be a part of the best in the land.
We came to be made most worthy Greeks,
Knowing these transformations were not the peaks.
But the things we considered as a must —
To be truthful, kind, honest and just.
We came not only to be physically tough,
But to go to classes and "STRUT OUR STUFF,"
We came to learn the courses so that we could "TALK, TALK, TALK,"
And never ever be "DUBIOUS" and depend upon a balk.
We came to do things right, not "SHILLY SHALLY."
To attend to our own affairs and not to dilly dally.
We came and learned to be very smart.
For instance, knowing the daily menu by heart.
We came to go on picnics, and occasionally a hike,
To attend social parties, Greek dances, "AND THE LIKE,"
We came to learn how to mix these affairs.
To balance them with lessons and avoid the many snares.
Today, May 26, 1953, we go,
To disperse our knowledge and never take the answer NO,
We go as young and vivacious and daring scientists,
Now dedicated to the world as educational philanthropists.
WE CAME AND NOW WE GO.
WILLIAM F. HENDERSON

WINNER AND LOSER
By Edgar A. Guest
The throng loves the winner
whatever the test.
The crowd likes the man who has
proved he is best,
But cheers for the victor would
seldom be heard
Were it not for the boys who
run second and third.
And even the lad who ends up in
last place
Has done all he could just to
make it a race.
The marks that are set all the
record books show.
To those that have made them
the plaudits will go.
But the record established might
not have occurred
Were it not for the ones who
ran second and third.
Were it not for the courage and
dash they displayed
The victor's achievement might
not have been made.
So here's to the fellows not
destined to win
Who still give their best to the
contests they're in.
Important their roles (though
not ones they'd choose ) ,
For there could be no winner
without those who lose.
They give to the victor his
moment of fame,
They bring out his best and they make
it a game.
