KOR SPRING OF 1872.

R. CUMMING & CO.

PITTSBURGH, 2,

(Successors To J. Knox.)

TO OUR PATRONS.

WE return thanks to our thousands of customers of the past year for the very
liberal patronage they have bestowed upon us, and the many flattering novices
of satistaction with the stock, and the condition in which they have received it,
that they have favored us with, which is all the more gratifying to us as show-
ing that our efforts to please our customers are not unappreciated. We are
also greatly encouraged thereby to increased effort in the future to procure all
the new varieties of fruits and flowers, carefully testing them, and giving to the
public the benefit of our experience, and to send out stock, if possible, even bet-
ter than heretofore.

We hepe, by unremitting attention to the interests of our friends, to greatly
increase our business. We trust that all our customers of the past year will not
only favor us with their orders, but will also induce their friends and neighbors
to do the same. : 3

We sought to grow, the past season, a very superior rather than a large stock
of the various articles offered in this list. Great care has been bestowed upon
the propagation and cultivation of our entire stock, which is in variety the most
complete that has ever been grown here or elsewhere, embracing nearly every
variety o* any merit.

We can safely say, that the stock we offer this Spring is fully equal in all re-
Spects to any in the country, and our prices are as low as a genuine article of
the best quality can be grown for.

When as many as 500) vines or plants of any one variety are ordered, we fur-
nish them at the rate per 100@0—less than 500 and as many as 60, at the rate per
100—below 50 and not less than 6, at the rate per dozen—below 6, at the price
per single article. This arrangement must be strictly adhered to.

Terms Cash3 no departure from this rule except by special agreement.

Rogers’ Hybrids.” ee
The demand for some of these Hybrids has been very great and & increasing,
There is no doubt that some of them are very superior grapes and generally do
well. =Nos. 3, 9 and 89 are our favorites and we think no one will be disap-
pointed with them. The stock in this country is quite small and there are
many spurious plants disseminated. Our stock is propagated from bearing vines
in our vineyards.

ARNOLD’S HYBRIDS.

These new Grapes were originated by Charles Arnold, of Paris, Ontario, by
crossing the foreign varieties upon the Clinton. They are said to be hardy,
healthy and productive; the fruit of great excellence. We do not think they
will ever prove valuable vineyard varieties, nor generally healthy. They are
worthy of trial, however, by the amateur.

CROTON.

Hybrid, cross between Delaware and Chasselas de Fontainebleau, originated
by S. W. Underhill, Croton Point, N. Y. A Grape of fine quality and prob-
ably valuable for amateur culture, will not likely prove healthy enough for
general vineyard purposes.

JUCUNDA—* OUR No. 700.”

We believe Strawberries to be the most profitable crop of fruit that can now
be grown. The demand for fine fruit at enormous prices is greater than the
supply. We have no difficulty in obtaining from 40 to 75 cents per quart for
Jucunda—our No. 700, in our own and the Philadelphia and New York markets.
We hope to have, in the course of a year or two, one hundred acres in Jucunda,
our No. 700. On good ground, with the right kind of cultivation, it will yield
$1,000 to the acre. It is undoubtedly a marvellous berry, and no one who has
ever seen it on our grounds but has been astonished at the wonderful show of
fruit. There is no cther variety that can at all compare with it.

CAUTION.

We here take occasion to caution purchasers from buying spurious plants.
We last season procured sample plants from three sources, for Jucunda, that
proved to be not genuine. There is no doubt that the reputation of this variety
has been greatiy injured in some sections of the country by the dissemination
of many spurious plz nts.

For further information of this and other varieties, with colored plate, see
our Descriptive and Illustrated Catalogue, sent on receipt of 10 cents.

PRICES OF PLANTS.

This is a new variety originated by D. W. Herstine, Philadelphia, and
strongly recommended by the Fruit Committee of Pennsylvania Horticultural
Society. We, however, from our own observation, advise growers to test it before
planting largely. It undoubtedly has some merit, but we do not think it will
supercede the Clarke, Philadelphia and Naomi, as the leading market varieties,
