PRINTED FOR THE SOCIETY BY J. SKINNER & COMPANY, LTD.

1916,

PREFACE.

THESE fragments of Registers and list of subscriptions
belonging to the Episcopal Church (St. Andrew's) at St.
Andrews, Fife, are here kindly printed at the instance of the
Scottish Record Society.

They only embrace a comparatively short period of years,
1722- 1 787, and, as Mr. Oliphant tells us in his Historical Notes
relating to this congregation, " it was by a mere accident that even
these scanty records were preserved. When or how they were lost
or thrown away there is nothing to show, but they were found by
Mr. George Cruickshank, postmaster of St. Andrews, and a
member of the Vestry of the Congregation from 1821 until shortly
before his death in 1874, in a tobacconist's shop, where parts of
them had been already used for wrapping up snuff ! This must
have been prior to 1843, as passing mention of these registers is
made in Lyon's History of St. Andrews, which was published in
that year."

Apparently these fragments disappeared again during a change
of incumbents, 1869-70, together with an old minute book, which,
however, was recovered in November 1872, and the registers
probably with it, though one portion of them (between 1740 and
1748) seems to have then been irrevocably lost.

Small as these fragments are, they are of great interest, and
contain the names of most families belonging to the congregation
during the years to which they refer.

The Registers consist of two parts, the first with no cover,
and from which apparently sheets have been torn off at the
beginning and end, and now embracing the period from 8th July
1722 to 5th July 1757 ; the second, which seems to be entire, and
having a wrapper of coarse brown paper, containing entries of
191 baptisms and 14 marriages ( 1 748-1 787).

The list of subscriptions looks magnificent, but the pounds
there recorded are " Scots," not English !

iv . Preface.

There are many interesting names in the list, and it may be
here noted that the mystic initials " N.S." just above an entry on
30th October 1752, mark the introduction of the Gregorian
Calendar or " new style " into Great Britain.

A good deal of interesting information as to the details of
these Registers, &c. will be found in Mr. T. T. Oliphant's
" Historical Notes of the Episcopal Congregation at St. Andrews,"
chapter I., to which I am largely indebted for these few pre-
fatory remarks.
