BACKGROUND 

This  project  was  a  telephone  survey  conducted  among  adult  San  Francisco  residents  who  had  used  Muni  in 
the  past  six  months.  A  total  of  582  interviews  were  conducted  during  the  period  October  27  through 
November  14, 2011.  Interviews  were  conducted  in  English,  Spanish,  and  Cantonese. 

KEY  FINDINGS 

USAGE  OF  MUNI 

Four  out  of  every  ten  respondents  (40%)  use  Muni  at  least  five  days  a  week. 


•  A  lower  of  share  Caucasian  riders  (37%)  use  Muni  often  (5 
days  a  week  or  more)  compared  to  other  ethnicities.  Hispanics 
(49%)  and  Asians  (44%)  were  most  likely  to  ride  Muni  at  least 
five  days  a  week. 

•  Most  (61%)  indicate  that  they  would  consider  walking  a 
longer  distance  to  their  Muni  stop  if  they  knew  it  would  reduce 
their  overall  travel  time. 


Potential  respondents  who  were  disqualified  from  the  survey  because  they  had  not  ridden  Muni  in  the  last 
six  months  were  asked  the  main  reason  they  did  not  ride  Muni.  The  most  cited  reasons  were  that  the 
respondent  preferred  to  use  their  personal  vehicle  or  that  they  felt  that  Muni  trips  took  too  long. 

OVERALL  RATING 

Well  over  half  of  respondents  (57%)  rate 
Muni  service  as  excellent  or  good. 

•  Overall  satisfaction  among  Muni 
riders  has  increased  slightly 
compared  to  2010  (the  last  time  the 
survey  was  conducted),  when  52% 
rated  Muni  service  excellent  or 
good. 

•  Those  who  use  Muni  at  least  several 
times  a  week  rate  the  service  more 
highly  than  other  riders. 

IMPROVING  MUNI 

The  aspects  of  MUNI  respondents  would  most  like  to  see  improved  include: 

•  More  accurate  schedules/On  time  performance       •  Overcrowding 

•  More  frequent  service/Longer  hours  •    Service  reliability

MUNI  SERVICE  ATTRIBUTES 

Riders  were  asked  to  rate  Muni's  performance  on  a  variety  of  attributes  as  Excellent,  Good,  Fair,  or  Poor. 
Responses  were  assigned  a  value,  with  Excellent  equaling  "4"  and  Poor  equaling  "1",  to  come  up  with  an 
average  (mean)  score  for  each  attribute. 

The  attributes  which  rated  highest  were:  Those  attri  butes  rated  lowest  were: 

•  Accessibility  for  persons  with  disabilities  •    Vehicle  cleanliness 

•  Safe  operation  of  vehicles  •    Service  frequency 

•  Operator  (driver)  helpfulness  •    Service  reliability 

MUNI  WEBSITE 

More  than  half  of  all  riders  (58%)  have  visited  the  Muni  website. 

•  Males  (64%)  are  somewhat  more  likely  than  females  (54%)  to  have  visited  the  web  site. 

•  Riders  who  visited  the  website  gave  it  an  overall  rating  of  2.66  (out  of  4). 

CLIPPER  CARD  RATING  AND  FAMILIARITY  WITH  MUNI'S  AMBASSADOR  PROGRAM 

Nearly  nine  out  often  respondents  (87%)  who  used  a  Clipper  Card  to  pay  their  fare  rated  the  experience 

excellent  or  good. 


•  Those  who  used  their  Clipper  Card  on  Muni  gave  an  overall 
rating  of  3.29  (out  of  4)  to  their  Clipper  Card  experience. 

•  Of  those  who  do  not  use  Clipper,  over  half  (57%)  said  they 
do  not  use  it  because  they  do  not  ride  Muni  enough. 

•  Only  9%  said  they  are  familiar  with  the  Muni  Ambassador 
program. 

•  However,  60%  of  respondents  said  such  a  program  would 
be  at  least  somewhat  useful.

•  The  most  often  cited  reason  for  support  of 
the  change  was  that  it  would  allow  passengers  to 
board  faster  and  help  the  bus  stay  on  schedule. 
Respondents  said  it  would  also  force  passengers 
to  fill  in  the  back  of  the  bus. 

•  The  most  cited  reason  for  opposing  this 
change  was  that  it  would  make  it  easier  for  fare 
evaders  to  board  the  bus.  Respondents  also 
expressed  concern  that  the  volume  of 
passengers  boarding  through  the  back  would 
make  it  difficult  to  alight  from  the  vehicle.
