EXPLANATION FOR USE OF CHART.
Mount the chart on a light drawing board. Pivot a string in
the center and fit a loop in the end of the string outside of
the circumference. This string represents the Meridian .<
of the observer. Desiring to know where the differ- 4
ent Heavenly bodies should be looked for at
any time, plot the position of the Sun, A V
Moon, and Planets by means of the Right t j sf- .r
Ascension and Declination taken from the ^ jf-
Nautical Almanac. The position of the Sun
will indicate at once what Stars and Planets
will be above the Horizon and those be¬
low it at sunset, with certain modifica- i
tions, due to a further considera-
tion of latitude and declination,
Wishing to know what bodies f/
are at or near the Meridian
at a certain hour, say 7 p.
m., get the Right Ascen- M, F N
sion of the Mean Sun ^
for that time, add 7
hours.andwehave
the Local Siderial
Time or Right
Ascension of
. . .
the Merid¬
ian.
EXPLANATION FOR USE OF CHART (Continued).
Place the string in this position; it will then be seen at once what
bodies are on or near the Meridian, as well as those lying to
the eastward and westward of it. Plot the position of
the Zenith by its Declination which is equal to the
y 'y Latitude of the observer. Since the Horizon is
90° from the Zenith, the approximate altitude
C of any body on the Meridian may readily
be seen. The position of the well-known
bodies, the Sun and Moon will assist greatly
in identifying unfamiliar Stars, and the Planets,
not easily followed in their ever-changing
positions, can readily be recognized by
their location in regard to well-known
constellations, the Sun and Moon,
or with reference to the Meridian
at any time. The chart, being
a projection of the fixed
stars on the plane of the
Equator, is eccentric to
the Zenith of the ob¬
server in every case
when not located
at the Pole. Re¬
