HONOUR SOCIETY

AWARD DAY

On January 21, 1963, the Faculty and Students of Saint Michael's
College School paid tribute to the old and new members of the
Saint Michael's Honour Society. At the Student Academic As-
sembly the Most Reverend George Flahiff, C.S.B., Archbishop
of Winnipeg, presented the "M" Award to the leaders in each
Grade, and the Honour Pin to the Honour Students. This lofty
perch is gained by those who obtain and retain an average of
75% with no mark below 60% in any subject.

Grade Thirteen Honour "M" Award
winner Richard-^ Puccini receives
his plaque from Archbishop Fla-
hiff.

The Inspector of Saint Michael's College School from the Department of
Education, Mr. Hodgins, poses with Jerry Radziuk (the M-Man in Grade
Eleven), and Richard Puccini (the M-Man in Grade Thirteen).

Michael O'Hagan displays his "M" to the
camera man in the Tower Office. Michael
rose to the lofty M-Man heights only after
a strenuous struggle against many out-
standing scholars in Grade Twelve.

Page 22

Francis Markotich of Grade Nine-Five walked off
with the honours among the Freshmen at Saint
Michael's this year. To be the leader of two
hundred and eighty aspirants for th» title is a
remarkable achievement; and Frank will not re-
Hnqxiish his stately role without a mighty strug-
gle. Congratulations, Frank; keep up the good
work.

Jules Gagne was high among the Grade Nine stu-
dents last year. At that time it was obvious that
he would move up higher on the percentage lad-
der; and that he did. He moved rapidly and
surely  right  to  the  top.  Congratulations,  Jules;
you have worked diligently to gain your high
place among the scholars in Grade Ten.

The outstanding Class in Grade Nine as far as Honour Society pin-wearers is concerned is Grade Nine-
Five. These ten boys happily, and proudly, and with dignity wear their Honour Society Pin. Stand-
ing: James McCarthy, Paul McCann, Michael Miller, Terry McNally, Enzo Montini. Seated: Eugene
McEleney, Frances Markotich, Paul McCarron, Joseph Mior, William Manley.

Winthrop {Ross Morrison) kisses his sister, Marion {Diane Beauvais) , while his mother {Valerie
King) and his girl friend, Amaryllis {Mary O'Donohue) look on.

The Music Man, Harold Hill {Charles Wyszkowski) stirs up the River City Townspeople, who are in a
holiday mood, with his rendition of "Seventy-Six Trombones."

Mayor Shinn {John Miles), the Townspeople and Kids, listen attentively to Charlie Cowell {Michael
Foster) , the Anvil Salesman, as he gives them, the facts about Harold Hill.

The Traveling Salesmen passing through River City, Iowa, hear about
the Music Man from Mark Kaczkowskl. Could that be Harold sitting
on his suitcqse?

The Indian Maidens of the Tribe of Wah-Tah-Nyee entertain the towns-
people in the Madison High School Gymnasium during the July 4th
exercises.

"Iowa Stubborn" sung by the Townspeople in the centre of town is the
"Welcome" that Harold Hill receives on his arrival at River Gty.

"You're not listening, Marion." The Music Man invades the peace and
quiet of the Library where Marion Paroo rules with an iron hand. The
"kids" of River City ore "foolin' 'round" while their Librarian is occu-
pied with Harold.

"You don't know me . . . yet." This is
the "line" that Marion uses when she
tried to forestall Mr. Cowell in his at-
tempt to belittle Harold Hill in the eyes
of the people of River City.

Winthrop poses with his new trum-
pet with the mother-of-pearl keys.

"Let's have a Party!" This is a cry that is a "hit"
in every set; and the Boarders always seemed to have
an excuse for a "get-together." Father Smith, the
kind, and gentle Boarder Master was "taken in" by
the pleadings and "threats" (?) of his subjects on
several occasions. The pictures on this page were
taken at one of the informal gatherings.

Refreshments were always an important feature of the

Father Iredale, Assistant Prefect.

Since this was a Boarder Party, proceedings always
began with food, closed with food; and, of course, there
was food at intermission. If Cam, isn't careful he'll be
wearing a tray-full of cup cakes.

It seems as if the entertainment was of high calibre. Expres-
sions on the faces of the boys in this picture all depict fun and
approval.

Under the direction of Father Whelan, the Student Council
organized and produced the Student Activity Assemblies dur-
ing the past year. The entertainment provided by several of
the organizations in the school ranged from the ridiculous to the
sublime. The St. Clair House Drama Society supplied the buf-
foonery for the Football Pep Assembly. The Music Department
presented a "Pops Concert" to advertise the Christmas Band
Concert; and this gathering in the gym was a highlight of the
pre-Christmas meetings. Perhaps the highlight of the year was
the "Music Man" Assembly. Mr. Guerriere and his Quartette
joined the popular Diane Beauvais on the stage to enthrall
both the Staff and students with their magnificent musical
talent.

Captivating music was played by

Was You" which she sang so beautifully at all of the performances of the most popular of all of the Drama
Society's productions of recent years.

The remaining pictures on this page were taken at the
"Beat-Del-Assembly." The feature attraction at this
Assembly was the production presented by the St. Clair
House Drama Society. It was a great "hit;" and all
those who were present were fortunate indeed.

FOOTBALL

The Football Season for the Bantams was an interesting ond
a successful one. Much of the credit for the success must
go to the coaching staff which worked long hours teaching
the "greats of tomorrow" the fundamentals of the game as it
is played today. In the picture to the left is Elios Zarou

Saint Michael's College School rallied around the
organizers of the Tony Fritz Benefit at Maple Leaf
Gardens when the Neil McNeil Maroons played host
to the Hamilton Red Wings of the O.H.A. On the
following day at Saint Michael's Arena another "ben-
efit" was held for Tony when the Senior "All-Stars"
at St. Michael's once again challenged their teachers
to a game of "shinny." And once again the well-
conditioned members of the Faculty scored a popular
victory over the "boys." On the short end of a 5-2
score going into the third period, the older and wiser
members of the Faculty came through with a whirl-
wind finish to outscore their weaker opponents five
to nothing and once again emerge victorious.

Father Sheedy extends an official welcome to Tony Fritz and
his father on the occasion of the "Tony Fritz Benefit" which
was held in Toronto during the month of February.

It was a lot of fun for all! A section of the large crowd which
jammed the Arena is shown with one of the many banners on dis-
play during the fracas.

Father "Doc" Megan, the "energizer," was
well-equipped to take good care of the Fac-
ulty players when they returned to the bench
after taking 1% spins (?) around the large
ice surface; and for some of the older
Fathers it must have been terribly large.

The Faculty team on one of its many forays into enemy territory
during the third period bombardment of the enemy citadel.

Tony Fritz was the game referee. At the centre ice
at the end of the first period, he thanks Father
Sheedy, the students (here represented by President
Nick and Sports Rep. Hugh O'Neill) and all of his
friends for the hospitality and the financial assist-
ance which he received on this wonderful occasion.

THE POWDER PUFF GAME

The Second Annual Powder Puff Game was
held  again  this  year  at  Saint  Michael's  Arena;
and once again the girls packed them in. Sorbara
and Volpe were the brains (?) behind the St.
Joseph's bench while Puma and Shanahan di-
rected the destinies of the young ladies from
Loretto. Once again St. Joe's outscored Loretto,
but it was an exciting contest throughout. In the
closing minute of play Loretto took out their goalie

and almost tied the score, but the final shot hit
the goal post. The smartly attired Cheerleaders
of Loretto inspired their Pom-Pom waving cheer-
ing section with their enthusiasm ; and they won
the hearts of both friend and foe.

Coaches, Captains and Assistant Captains of
the two teams appear in the pictures at the bot-
tom of the page.

A group of grid-warriors before they took to the court for the
big game.

The Kerry Blues took to the Basketball
Court during the month of January and
"thawed" out the Junior Basketball Team
in an exhibition-benefit tilt. A large
crowd assembled in the gym for this en-
counter and the antics of the football team
entertained the onlookers even though
their court tactics left much to be desired.

"Miss Basketball of '63" {Joe Toby) makes a few
adjustm.ents before taking to the court.

It was a formal affair and Bill Pigott

When the young Itahan takes leave of his beloved
shores, steeped in history and in tradition, he breathes
a reluctant "arrivederci". The Irish lad can scarcely
summon up a devout "God Bless You" as he sees his
Emerald Isle fading from his misty vision. As the
Hawaiian native watches his enchanted island melt
into the sea, he hears in the tumbling surf, that song
at once happy and sad, "Aloha".

Immortalized in song and story, in every part of
the world, in every language, partings have the same
characteristics of joy and sadness, pride and humility.
We, the Graduates of 1963, have these same feelings
in our hearts as we say, in our language, to our school,
to our teachers, and to one another . . . "Farewell".

Our prayer has been, and it is today, that Our
Divine Lord, through the intercession of His Blessed
Mother Mary, Our Mother, the Queen of the Holy
Rosary, will bestow upon our Alma Mater His special
blessings today, tomorrow, and every day.

"Arrivederci !"
Fare . . . Well !"

EATON'S Junior Executive
for 1962-63!

He lets us know what's "in" with you and your crowd!

This class-mate of yours represents you and your school

on EATON'S Junior Executive. Whether it be fad

or fashion— EATON' S will know— through your elected rep.

He can tell you about the bandbox EATON'S provides

for school dances, plus various other projects and services we

enjoy planning for you.
