UPLAND GAME BIRD REGULATIONS FOR 1987
SAGE GROUSE
By order of the Montana Fish and Game Commission, the following described areas shall be open to
the hunting of sage grouse for a portion of each day from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half
hour after sunset for the limits and on the dates shown for each area. Sunrise-sunset times shall
he in conformance with the sunrise-sunset schedule by zones adopted by the Montana Fish and Game
Commission .
September 5 through
October 18, 1987
Limit :
That part of Montana lying within the following described boundaries:
Beginning at the junction of the Continental Divide and the
Montana-Idaho border at Lost Trail Pass (on Montana Highway 43) , then
north-easterly along the Continental Divide to the headwaters of Lyons
Creek in T15N R6W, then southeasterly down the north fork and main
Lyons Creek and Little Prickly Pear Creek to the Missouri River, then
up river to Beaver Creek, then easterly up Beaver Creek to the Meagher
County line, then northerly, easterly and southerly along the Meagher
County line to the Park County line, then southerly along the east
boundary of the Park County line to the Wyoming border, then westerly
and northerly along the Montana-Wyoming and Montana-Idaho borders to
the point of beginning.
The daily limit for sage grouse shall be three (3). Possession limit
shall be twelve (12).
September 5 through That part of Montana lying east and north of the following boundary:

south along the Divide to the headwaters of Iiyons Creek in T15N, R6W,

line, then southerly along the east boundary of the Park County line to

Montana-Wyoming, Montana-South Dakota, Montana-North Dakota and
Montana-Canadian borders to the Continental Divide, the point of
beginning .

Areas Closed to Hunting: State Game Preserves, closures and National Parks. For hunting

Freezout Game Management Area (Teton County): SVJhi , Section 19, Sections 29 and 30, T22N, R3W, VJH
Section 1 2 , W-j o I EI5 Section 1 2 , and that portion of Sections 13 and 24 within the posted boundary
of the Freezout Game Management Area, T22N, R4W. (This area is open to upland game bird hunting
until the opening of the waterfowl season, then it will be closed to all hunting.)
Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir (Lewis and Clark County) : The Bureau of Reclamation Regulating
Reservoir located in Section 8, TION, R2W in the Helena Valley, as posted. (This area is open to
upland game bird hunting until the opening of the waterfowl season, then it will be closed to all
hunting. )
License : Must be in possession of a Class AAA $36 Resident Sportsman's License, or a Class A-1 $4
Resident Game Bird License and $2 Conservation License, or Class B-1 $30 Nonresident Game Bird
License and $2 Conservation License, or a Class B-10 $350 Nonresident Big Game Combination License.
Montana residents 62 and older and resident youths 12 through 14 must be in possession of the $2
Conservation License. Persons under 12 years of age may not hunt game birds.
Means of Taking: Sage grouse may be taken with a shotgun not larger than a ten gauge or long bow
and arrow. All other means of taking prohibited.

MOUNTAIN GROUSE (Franklin's, Blue, Ruffed)
By order of the Montana Fish and Game Commission, the State of Montana shall be open to the hunting
of Franklin's grouse, blue grouse, and ruffed grouse for a portion of each day from one-half hour
before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset during open seasons. Sunrise-sunset times shall be in
conformance with the sunrise-sunset schedule by zones adopted by the Montana Fish and Game
Commission .
September 5 through Statewide
December 6, 1987
Limit ; The daily limit shall be five (5) grouse in aggregate. Possession limit
shall be twenty (20) grouse in aggregate.
Areas Closed to Hunting; State Game Preserves, closures. National Parks, and the Flathead Indian
Reservation. For hunting privileges on other Indian Reservations, inquire at the local Indian
agency headquarters. For hunting privileges on Federal Wildlife Refuges, inquire at the local
Refuge office.
I'’lathead County: Beginning where the west access road to the Flathead Lake Waterfowl Production
Area enters said area in the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter. Section 24, T27N, R21W,
approximately one-half (J5) mile east of the town of Somers, then east-northeast along fence marking
U.S. Fish and Wilailife Service property as posted to the west property line of the Dedman ownership
in the west half of Section 20, T27N, R20W, then south along said line fence as posted to the north
shore of Flathead Lake, then south and westerly approximately one and three-quarters (1 3/4) miles
as posted to a large stump displaying a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ownership sign in the north
half of the north half of Section 25, T27N, R32W, then northerly along west property line of said
Waterfowl Production Area to the point of beginning. (This area is closed to upland game bird
hunting . )

By order of the Montana Fish and Game Commission, the following areas shall be open to the hunting
of ring-necked pheasants for a portion of each day from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half
hour after sunset during open seasons. Sunrise-sunset times shall be in conformance with the
sunrise-sunset schedule by zones adopted by the Montana Fish and Game Commission.
October 17 - December 6, 1986; Statewide.
Limit ; The daily limit shall be three (3) cock pheasants and the possession limit shall be twelve
(12) cock pheasants.
Areas Closed to Hunting; All State Game Preserves, closures and National Parks. For hunting
privileges on Indian Reservations and Federal Wildlife Refuges, inquire at the local Indian Agency
or Refuge office.
Flathead County; Beginning where the west access road to the Flathead Lake Waterfowl Production

limit shall be twenty four (24) partridge in aggregate (including chukar) .
Flathead County; Beginning where the west access road to the Flathead Lake Waterfowl Production
area enters said area in the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter. Section 24, T27N, R21W,
approximately ono-)ialf (>5) mile east of the town of Somers, then east-northeast along fence marking

1987 FALCONRY SEASON
By order of the Montana Fish and Game Commission, there is a falconry season for upland
and migratory game birds.
All areas open to hunting of upland game bird species by firearms shall be open to
either-sex hunting of that species by falconry with the following exception; Ravalli
County shall be closed to all partridge hunting by falconry.
All species of migratory game birds open to firearms hunting shall be open to hunting by
falconry. All areas closed to waterfowl hunting with firearms are closed to waterfowl
hunting by falconry.
Open Season; Upland Game Birds, except turkey; September 1, 1987, through March 31,
1988 for a portion of each day from one-half hour before sunrise to
one-half hour after sunset.
LIMIT; The daily limit shall be two (2) upland game birds per licensed
falconer and possession limit shall be six (6) upland game birds
per licensed falconer.
Migratory Game Birds;
Mourning Doves - September 1, 1987 through October 12, 1987 for a
portion of each day from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.
Waterfowl - see migratory game bird regulations.
LIMIT ; The daily limit shall be two (2) migratory game birds per licensed
falconer and possession limit shall be six (6) migratory game
birds per licensed falconer.
Note ; Sunrise-sunset times shall be in conformance with the sunrise-sunset schedule by
zones adopted by the Montana Fish and Game Commission.
Areas Closed to Hunting; All State Game Preserves and National Parks, Falconers must
check with local Indian agency headquarters for hunting privileges on Indian Reservations
and Refuge Managers for hunting privileges on National Wildlife Refuges.
Ravalli County remains closed to the hunting of Partridge.
License : Must be in possession of a valid Montana Falconer’s License, Montana Resident
or Nonresident Game Bird License and $2 Conservation License. In addition, migratory
waterfowl hunters must possess a State of Montana Waterfowl Stamp and a Federal Migratory
Waterfowl Stamp.
Means of Taking; During the special falconry season upland game birds and migratory game
birds may only be taken by legally acquired licensed raptors. All other means of taking
prohibited.
Landowner Permission; Falconers must have landowner permission before practicing
falconry on private land.
