the Highest Quality Seeds. In addition to the high quality

Vicks Famous Giant Branching Asters

Our Own Introduction

World renowned, these giant, fully double, globe-shaped Asters are among the
most famous of all Asters originated by Vicks.

The exquisite blooms, 314 to 4 in. in diameter, are produced on stems frequently
2 ft. long. They have broad, artistically placed, incurved petals and are fully double.

The plants grow 2 to 3 ft. tall and branch freely, blooming from midsummer to
frost. They are ideal for cut flowers and are brilliant for garden display.

Vicks Branching Asters are indispensable for the florist, which accounts for the
fact that this outstanding type is catalogued by seedsmen the world over. Home
gardeners would not be without them, for they come into bloom when many other
flowers are well past their prime.

Vicks Branching Asters are being steadily improved so that they surpass the
type sold only a few years ago, and are still among the best late commercial varieties.

placed ray or outer petals give an airy, lace-like, charming effect, and contrast well *

VICKS SUPERB LATE ‘’PEERLESS” ASTERS ~~ «

All varieties marked WR (Wilt-Resistant) are bred for Resistance and are practically immune to Aster Wilt

ASTER, PEERLESS BLUE (WR)

*

For wide range of color, beauty of flowers, general usefulness, and popularity, no other annual

flower can compare with the glorious Aster, Queen of Autumn Flowers. Nine-tenths of the

better known Aster varieties were introduced by James Vick. For best results with Asters,
plant the originator’s own strain. Vicks Asters are famous for quality.

Each of the three Peerless Asters is so highly meritorious that it is known as an
individual rather than as a member of the group. Wherever the Peerless Asters are
displayed, they always attract instant admiration. The large flowers, freely double
and quite globular, have long wiry stems and gracefully recurved petals. The
branching plants are vigorous, growing 2% to 3 feet tall. They bloom towards the
end of the Aster season.

Vicks Peerless Yellow (no. 1207)

This is the famous Peerless Yellow which remains the best and most satisfactory
Yellow Aster in spite of other yellows introduced more recently. True, light yellow,
Peerless Yellow is one of the most unusual—the most notable of all our introduc-
tions. So numerous, so large are the flowers that each plant is completely covered—
like a yellow dome. A single plant will frequently have from twenty to thirty good
stems of sufficient length for cut-flower purposes. The flowers are large, remarkably
full and ball-shaped, with centers deeply covered with curled and twisted petals.

Vicks Peerless Blue wr (wo. 1214)

Clear and rich in color, this is the finest blue Aster yet introduced. It is a splendid
addition to the Asters of the Late Branching type. The blooms are large and fully
double with gracefully recurved petals. The strong plants produce many flowers.

Pkt. 20c: 4 oz. 35e: 14 oz. 60c; oz. $1.75.

Vicks Peerless Pink wr (No. 1256)

Unquestionably the finest pink in the late flowering, branching class. The flowers
—they average about 4 inches in diameter—are ball-shaped and double to the very
center. The color, sometimes referred to as “improved shell-pink,” is warm rich
pink of unusual purity and beauty. The arrangement of the petals is most artistic.

Pkt. 15c: Ye oz. 35e; 14 oz. 60c; oz. $1.75.

Ave Marie

4147 White. Late. A marvelous variety with immense, pure white, beautifully
formed blooms that, although introduced only recently, has become a favorite with
florists and home gardeners alike. It is a quality Aster, the blooms measuring 4,
5 and 6 inches across. When they first open they appear quilled, for the petals are
folded lengthwise, but as they expand the long petals become quite flat. The plants
are luxuriantly branching, measuring 2 feet in height, and have long, sturdy, very
graceful stems. :

That Have Helped to Make Vick Famous

Vicks Silvery Asters

Wilt-Resistant

Vicks Silvery Pink wr (No. 1215)

Vicks Silvery Asters are so named because of the delicate silvery sheen which
seemingly overlies the predominating color—adding charm and beauty. Silvery
Pink is a warm glowing pink self, but, depending on how the light strikes the flowers,
it is reflected in a silvery sheen which, at times, seems to envelop the whole flower,
while at other times an entrancing bicolor effect is created by the highlights and
shadows on the curled petals. The 2 to 3 ft. tall plants are of branching habit,
and very vigorous, producing a splendid crop of long-stemmed flowers late in the
season.

Pkt. 25e; ¥g oz. 35e; 14 oz. 60e; oz. $1.75.

Vicks Silvery Rose wr (No. 1216)

Silvery Rose is the original Silvery Aster. The silvery effect given by the flowers
of this variety is due not only to a natural luster of the petals-as in the Silvery
Pink Aster, but because of a very delicate, almost invisible, threading of white on the
petals which are deep lilac-rose—almost cerise. The threads are so fine that they
give the petals a silvery sheen rather than a striped appearance. Even the slightest
change in light will change the color from glowing rose to silvery rose, and lights and
shadows are constantly at play over the beautiful blooms. Late-flowering.

Pkt. 15e; ¥g oz. 30c; 14 oz. 50c; oz. $1.50.

Vicks Autumn Glory wr (wo. 1195)

A Money Maker for the Commercial Grower

Latest of Asters. A truly beautiful Aster that blooms after the other Late Asters
are past their prime, and before the Chrysanthemums are well on the market.
With the Mammoth Peony-Flowered it prolongs the Aster season by two weeks,
coming at a time when good garden flowers are scarce.

Pure sea-shell pink, the flowers are very double and are borne on stems of unusual
length. Though similar to Mary Semple (Late Branching) in color, Autumn Glory
has a better, more substantial flower, and a deep and longer-keeping color. While
Autumn Glory cannot take the places of varieties like Pink Enchantress or Peerless
Pink, it supplements them by blooming later. It is always uniformly true to color
and type. 2 to 21% feet tall.

Pkt. 15e; 4 oz. 30c; 14 oz. 50; oz. $1.40.

Ball Aster

975 Sulphur Yellow. Flowers are globular, fully double, the centers made up
of many quill-like florets of deep sulphur-yellow surrounded by a single row or
collarette of light creamy yellow ray petals. The striking flower-form and color of
this distinct Aster make it most popular for garden and cutting. Plants grow 10 to
12 inches tall, of uniform, compact growth and extremely profuse blooming.

Pkt. 25e; Y% oz. 35e; 14 oz. 60c; oz. $1.75.

The importance of sowing the best Aster seed cannot be over-emphasized. It is not your in-

vestment in seeds that counts—it is your returns from it. The returns from your crop are

dependent upon its quality, and quality products can only be grown from fine seeds. Sow

VICKS SELECT STRAINS OF LATE FLOWERING ASTERS

(Continued)

Mammoth Peony-Flowered Asters

This is, without doubt, one of the finest of all late-flowering Asters. The plants
are of unusually showy growth, attain a height of from 21% to 3 ft., and produce
strong flower stems 15 to 20 in. long. The immensely large double blooms, 4 to 5 in.
across and almost as deep, are composed of innumerable, rather broad petals which
fold gracefully toward the center, giving the flowers the appearance of Peonies.
Excellent for cutting.

1130 Azure Fairy. Beautiful, clear azure blue flowers with silvery reflex.
1131 Maiden’s Blush. Delicate flesh-pink overlaid with warm pink.

1132 Peach Blossom. Aptly named, it has all the loveliness of a peach
blossom.

1128 Purple Robe. Large, very thick flowers of a very deep shade of
purple-blue.

1127 Rosebud. Lustrous as an opening rose.

1129 Silvery Rose. Delicate lavender-pink with silvery tones and rosy
depths.

The seven colors, described above, blend together beautifully, making this a prize
mixture which florists will find useful. Peony Asters are admirably adapted to grow-
ing for market and are excellent for shipping. The class is a new one, the colors those
soft lovely ones which now are being developed.

Heart of France (no. 1213)
Wilt-Resistant Strain

Heart of France is one of the many Vick Asters which have helped to spread our
fame around the world, and today is offered in the catalogs of nearly every seed
house. Scintillating in the brillianey and clearness of its unusual color tone, like the
limpid fires of the rarest ruby.

Heart of France is the purest red Aster ever introduced, opening pure ruby-red
and deepening with age, but retaining its remarkable beauty to the very end. The
petals appear strikingly changeable, showing now a unique glow and sheen, now a
soft, warm, velvety texture. In any light, natural or artificial, it commands ad-
MAMMOTH PEONY-FLOWERED ASTER miration.

Heart of France is one of Vicks Branching Asters with large and full flowers on

x very robust plants. The stems are long and strong. The plants begin to bloom quite
A early and open fully with midseason varieties, retaining their brilliance and luster
The grower of Asters for cut flowers should not overlook his opportunity to market small for a longer period than most any other color. When we named this magnificent

| ““Ceown of Gold’’ MARIGOLD

| 1937 GOLD MEDAL WINNER

A florists flower par excellence! Not only a new Marigold, but an
entirely new flower, unusual and attractive. The crown or top part
looks like a Chrysanthemum made up of long, incurved petals. The crown
and collar of big, broad petals which surround it are of an exquisite
luminous shade of golden orange, quite novel in Marigolds. The foliage
is entirely odorless; the flowers are sweet-scented, 212 inches across.
An excellent cut flower for forcing in gentle heat and unsurpassed for
garden display. Pkt. 25c; ¥g oz. 90c; 14 oz. $1.50; oz. $5.00.
