This is a family history memoir written by Emma Frey Campbell. It gives the history and geneology of the family descended from Jacob L Frey and Henrietta Heckscher who emigrated to the US in the mid 1800s from Germany. It has been edited by John M. Clement, Emma's great nephew. It includes pictures of the family members. Emma's memory was excellent for many details, but she provided no dates.
Emma Frey Campbell was an incurable optomist. She studied piano under Joseph Hoffman and also was in some theater perfomances. She considered herself to be an artiste and would play piano as others did housework around her. Her prose is effusive, and I thought it charming. But it may be of primary interest as a piece of history. Most of it centers on Rockaway, NY. A number of people mentioned figure prominently in the early history of Rockaway. But the Campbell family was also prominent with connections to Fordham University. Rev Thomas J Campbell SJ was president of Fordham in 1890.
Some high resolution restored pictures of places involving the family are also available: 1. Postcard view of Holland Ave Pier in Rockaway showing Frey's hotel 3. 3D card of Rockaway Iron Pier which was rented by Louis Phillis for a dance hall and restaurant.
