73 pages ; 24 cm
The scientific literature relative to the fishes of the western coast of North America is of unusually recent, as well as rapid, growth. Nothing exact was known till the present century had far advanced, for the accounts of the earlier writers, such as Venegas, instead of enlightening the reader, convey absolutely false ideas respecting the character of the ichthyic fauna
Issued also as vol. 23, art. 1 of the Smithsonian miscellaneous collections
Smithsonian Institution publication 463
Issued with Jordan D.S. Contributions to North American ichthyology. Part III. Washington, 1877-78. Eggers, H.F.A. The flora of St. Croix and the Virgin islands. Washington, 1879. United States. National Museum. Catalogue of the collection to illustrate the animal resources and the fisheries of the United States. Washington, 1879. Kumlien, L.
