This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. Thanks to Thomas King, a writer for Linux.com and LXer, for doing the rough editing for this series of interview segments!
In this series of 18 interview segments, Sun Microsystems Senior Engineering Director Joerg Heilig talks about OpenOffice.org, a project that he was responsible for within Sun. He talks about the economic motivation for Sun to sponsor OpenOffice.org; OpenOffice.org's competition with Microsoft; the importance of free file formats; and how Sun interacts with the OpenOffice.org community council. This is a great interview with the guy who was responsible for what has become arguably one of the top five Free Open Source Software projects in the world. OpenOffice.org fills a critical need for a Free (as in Free Speech) office productivity suite that is capable of competing with Microsoft's juggernaut Office productivity suite. If the real world digital tipping point does arrive and Free Open Source Software reaches 51% on the consumer desktop, it will be in no small measure thanks to OpenOffice.org.
In segment 14 (Tape 151~005), Joerg says that getting people up to speed on the mature OpenOffice.org code base is challenging. The volunteer needs to show that they have an interest in understanding the deep complexities of the very mature OpenOffice.org code base. If someone is sincere, they will give them an internship and give them a guided tour of the source code. Very often, commercial entities sponsor people to make contributions like extensions. But with a Free Open Source Software project, it is easier to get a community behind the project. He thinks that OpenOffice.org a market share of more than 50% could happen in 6 to 10 years from the time of this 2004 interview. That is the goal of the OpenOffice.org project, to get wide market saturation. Localization will help with this goal. Also, it makes sense for developing countries to get behind FOSS. Plus, FOSS code is getting better all the time, and simple end users don't really have complex needs, so OpenOffice.org will be able to meet these needs. Also, FOSS code is actually better in some areas. The FOSS community just needs to do some marketing to get this idea across to the broad public. The public can get all the support they need either from the community. And OpenOffice.org is not a project that was created by a student in his spare time, it was created by a commercial team. It just takes some time for people to understand that value proposition. [His thought on this point continues on the next segment]/.
In segment 15 (Tape 151~006), Joerg talks about how the real world digital tipping point might happen. He says that right now (July 2004), it is mostly just technical users who are using OpenOffice.org (OOo). But the says that there have been 35 million downloads of OOo. He says that it will spread out. People will tell their friends. It is difficult to estimate the total install base of OOo, because it is in so many countries and there are so many ways that it can be spread -- through magazines and CDs and downloads, all of which are legal. Surveys suggest that OOo has 6% to 10% market share in small and medium businesses. In the end user space, he estimates it is about 10%. Downloads and OEM (original equipment manufacturer) installations have been very successful with OOo and Star Office. He says that the enterprise is harder, but he thinks that with OOo verison 2.0, they will double the market penetration in about two years. One of the main barriers to entry are interoperability with Microsoft Office formats. OpenOffice.org will be better at that interoperability. In the past, there have been problems with layout, which sometimes changes from OOo to Microsoft Office and back again. Also, the OOo community made the OOo user interface more similar to Microsoft Office user interface. [His thoughts in this area are continued on the next segment].
