6/20, 6/22 - two great back to back drum/spaces
for what it's worth, two scintillating drum/spaces on back to back shows. Things get especially phreaky @ the
12:20 mark. I imagine with a headful of somethingorother, these were quite a tryp.
drums/spaces seem overlooked, and most of the time, rightly so - but when one really comes together ... the alchemy ... you get to catch the dragon you chase as a deadhead showgoer
for a shed with terrible sound, this recording is the cleanest, although why oh why is vince so out front in the mix?

A Contarian opinion...
Well, it sounds like several of us were at this show. I agree that the venue and area were great... I rode my bicycle to the show from the traffic jam the first day and then to the campground and back for day two, etc. It was fun to lock my bike up at the gate and go in. That said, it was my feeling then and now that this was an 'unfortunate' show that only looked good on paper. In four years, this was my first Scarlet>Fire and perhaps one of the weakest I know of. Jerry seemed, to me, frustrated this night. Personally, when there was a hint of it, I didn't want to hear the conclusion to the Dark Star this night, even though i'd heard the first verse at Richfield, because the band was not firing right. I remember Jerry turning his back to the audience during DS and finally ending his playing with a jerk of the guitar and then taking it off and calling it quits for Drumz... not pretty. I wasn't around for other rough Jerry periods in the early, mid-80's, like walking out on Brent, but it was no fun to see.
I am listening to this show in the background now... I do remember many people and the friends I was there with being so impressed by the names of the songs we heard that night and my immediate response was, wait until tomorrow, it can only get better. The second night was better... although these shows were more promising for the future they pointed to, with the Dead having a cool new venue, than the actual musical ground that was covered. Too bad they weren't welcomed back. It seemed like the actual vibe was good there at the time. I'd forgotten about the gate crashing... what a drag that was.
When I listened to the second set of the second night earlier today, it reminded me that Jerry really got himself out of the way, focusing on his guitar work and preserving himself for only the soulful tunes "So Many Roads" and "Standing On the Moon." I got goosebumps and risen hair hearing those songs today. I am sure it was the reset Jer needed to get back on track for the rest of the run, although I didn't hit the immediately following shows. That was a good and appropriate call on his part and allowed for, wiht his support, respectable versions Corrina and Vince's LWTGH, a song that was an immediate stretch for me to enjoy at all, even with the wall of harmony Bobby, Jerry and Phil provided.
Hey, I was 17 at the time and the Dead were my world. I'd already collected 600+ hours of Dead on tape and it meant a lot to me that the band play well, for their sake and ours. I did have fun in PA, the venue was cool and I think it even sounded better than Deer Creek, the popular MidWest amphitheater at that time, but this was the beginning of the end for me, when I began to question whether the Dead would have hooked me the way they did if I'd begun listening or first seen them in the Vince era instead of riding in during the "In the Dark" period when I was a 12 year old transitioning away from Brit classic rock for the first time. If I hadn't gotten 87-90 with Brent first, pardon the refrain, it wouldn't have been the same.
Listening to the Spanish Jam>Other One>Stella Blue>GDTRFB>A&A, I'm reminded that that is when the show began to take on any life... but, sh*t, that was 3/4 of the way through, wasn't miraculous, and that's pretty late in the game, especially the concert game.
My reference from this tour, having caught it at the beginning, middle and end, is the Buckeye Lake show. That still ranks as one of my faves... It was like the greatest hits of the tour, minus Casey Jones (besides, they'd played it too recently and too well a few dates earlier), and, much more than that, every song was played especially solid and with a controlled flair- listen to the light and airy Bird Song for example. It's the best TNK>B. O'Riley of the handful I've ever heard. Add to that, the most awesome fractal and 3D virtual reality video show and the best sound I think I ever heard at a show. It's my sole candidate for a DVD release from the Vince era and frankly, the only show I have an opinion about seeing on video.

Little Dark Starlake
I was in tour this summer and this was a fun venue at Racoon Creek State Park - lots of weirdness, the sound was great, the band played well. Midi changes for each solo in Scarlet.

Spanish Jam
Spanish Jam (which they used to play in the late 60's) is short, but it's a highlight. It's the version used in Grayfolded, at the beginning of track 8. The overlapping transition into the Other One works well, and the Other One is good. As others have said, this is one of the best shows from '92.

Good sound
In regards to previous review, Phil creeps into the mix by the beginning of Fire (He is just about totally absent in the Scarlet). Second verse only Dark Star, Way Cool (Dark Star is VERY unfortunately marred with right channel dropouts and then cuts right before drums)! This night was the complete antithesis of the night after, which was pretty crappy in terms of both song choice and performance-wise. What a turn-around one night could make for these guys, part of what I loved (and still love) and miss dearly. Anybody who doubts the Dead's ability to rock from 92 on should listen to the Fire, and tell me with a straight face that the band itself wasn't on FIRE.

6/22/92 Star Lake
This is an unbelievable good sounding SBD, everything is SO clear (except the low Phil in "Scarlet"), and this coming from a long time audience taper, and sbd tech. The only problems in this recording are the drop outs in "Darkstar" the other poster mentioned. Other than that this is a must have. I have had this set on cassette for years, an AUD source, and it sounds as If Iam listening to it for the first time again. Thanks a bunch to the uploader.
Also, the drums sound really good in the mix!!!

This is my favorite show from 1992. The first set is well played with lots of energy. The Scarlet is the only weak part of the show. The transition into fire is beautiful and the solos in Fire just rock. To get a GDTRFB only one in 92 and Spanish Jam in the same show was a treat. Download and enjoy!
