I was at this show thus I give a four rather than five star rating. There was a tenseness to the band I hadn't seen in other shows of theirs. It proved to be with some merit as the Mermen line-up would eventually change for the next few years. Eventually they all found their way back to the band. I can't help but think I saw something a bit profound as Martyn would be the first to leave soon followed by Allen. A great gig none-the-less. I remember Jim was using a piece of plywood in front of his amp as some muffling effect. All the music slides together after 11 years. One more great show from one of my favorite bands. The Goodbye was ironically fitting and hauntingly beautiful...

It's true, as others have noted, that this show has some subdued moments. It may lack the consistent fire of, say, the highly rated Cubberly Community Theater gig from the same year, but the band is still in top form and gets plenty nasty with Slipping the Glimps, Curve and the Honeybomb/Jack the Ripper combo.
Also, the sound on this recording is extraordinarily good. Considering the high quality of the Mermen downloads here, that's saying something. It just seems to have more presence and clarity. I think this is the only show whose source notes suggest it is a matrix recording, so maybe that has something to do with it.
Here's a five-star bump to move this higher in the ratings.

The sound quality is as good as any of the Mermen shows here, and the playing is wonderful, with most songs at a slower tempo but no less intense.
"Slipping the Glimpse" at the start of the second set is good, and their performance of "Raglan" is just achingly beautiful with a wonderful shimmer to the guitar tone.

As mentioned above, this recording is as clean and sharp at it gets. The original Mermen sound is dialed down Sweet for this gig, so you can crank it waay Up! You need to catch these huge SoundWaves and RIDE!!

this is my first mermen review, but I have seen them live 3-4/yr for the past 3-4 years. I also own most of their recordings. i mention this only to add context to the opinions below.
sbd tapes! great times and a great performance.
Big shout out for Martyn. Great drumming. Thunderous.
Quiet Surf opener for this is decadently mellow/beautiful, followed by two calamitious jams, good for rocking out. the highlight of this set is the "emmylou rides...". Nice feedback, Jim.
Second disc set is MELLOW. I listened to this driving back through the long winding redwood groves on my way home from Stinson Beach one Saturday night. It sounded great to me and everyone in the car. Very beautifully played. You can't go wrong to put this in when folks are feeling mellow, but not dead yet.
Enjoy.
