Subject: Ellwood Austin Welden's Samkhya Karika
Subject: Ellwood Austin Welden's Samkhya Karika
Present paper goes into some detail regarding the Samkhya Karika, regarded by most as the essential authoritative text of the Sankhya School of Philosopy.
Sankhya means to: count, enumerate. A Karika is technical text. The Sankhya Karika enumerates 25 principles (Tattvas)along with the two realities of Purusha (consciousness)and Prakriti (the first principle "Pradhana" of the Universe. Prakriti is unconscious and from it evolves the rest of the 25 principles of the Universe.
Readers will recognize these various terms in the Bhagavad gita, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Upanishads, Manava Dharmashastra etc. As such, Sankhya is perhaps the most important orthodox school of Hinduism.
Mr. Weldens Treatise forms a portion of his PHD Thesis. This and all his other articles are highly recommended for those who already have a basic understanding of Sankhya and wish to delve into more deeply.
