I have admitted in my own Top 10 list that I am woefully ignorant of the catalogue of pre-1970 Dead. It just hasn't been my cup of tea. yeah, i'll pull out Live/Dead every now and then to get a little Tom Constanten fix--kind of like watching "On her Majesty's Secret Service" for the novelty of seeing a guy named George Lazenby play 007 for the only time in the film's franchise history (it's actually one of the best Bond films, as it turns out), but usually I just wave at that 60's stuff and go DL another show from '77.
Now i'm taking a chance at changing my ways.
I've looked at your list and have decided ONE show to access and I hope i'm making the right pick. It got all 5 star reviews here on the LMA so it seems like the one to go with, unless you've got a better suggestion. It's 2-14-68.
I'm prepared to be wowed, and hope i'm not confirming my worst suspicions instead that this stuff is just hopelessly dated a la "Listen to what the flower people say" from "Spinal Tap."
I'll get back to you, and thanks for the list.

Yes, you had gorgeousness and tranquillity in much of the '77 catalogue, like the Love Each Other from 5-25-77 and the Jack a Roe from 5-17-77, but there was a lot of ass-kicking rock and roll thrown in there too (jack straw and Might as well from 10-29-77...oh, hell, don't get me started ;-)!

You don't have to jam at 180 m.p.h to make great music.

Where to begin? Well, it's not that I don't still prefer the 1977 stuff, but my eyes and ears have been opened.
I still don't like what I call the "dungeons and dragons" feel to songs like Cryptical...it just seems dated to me when they sing that kind of stuff...(guess why I preferred the later years when they dropped the front and back end of that Anthem material and just played TOO, but I digress)...
when they jam in shows like this (2-14-68) it IS INCREDIBLE. Just the raw energy in jerry's gritty guitar...the hard edge to the playing...and really, the whole band, when in the throes of that Alligator>Caution Jam are just BLAZING...it really is as hardcore as a punk band performance, and that makes sense given the time period, and the fact that these guys WERE the punks of their day--forging a psychedelic/hard rock/blues/garage band/jam-based marathon that was the new sound of its day.
I also love just how YOUNG Jerry sounds--he's full of the energy of the time and his own youthful power...and it really comes across when he lets his fingers fly. I can see how that time period is unrivaled in terms of that sheer youthful gusto--and given how hard they partied the burn-out that took Pig's life also took a toll as early as 1972...you do hear them start to mellow a bit then, even though that process began w/some of the country flavored songs of American beauty...but right up til Pig left their shows were marked by that uncanny power sound--ugly at times, raw always, but when ON, as itense as you can get.
So thanks for the suggestion--i'll be checking out some other pre-1970 stuff, and while I still think in the late 70's they werre a far more mature band, writing better songs and performing to a higher standard, there is no longer any doubt in my mind that some of the late 60's material, ESPECIALLY the "shut up and jam" sections, are a gold mine of amazing energy and mind blowing musical Dead.
4 stars for the show, a STRONG 4 stars, w/points off only b/c I still think the singing is VERY warbly in parts, and I just find some of the lyrics and certain musical sections dated . (Criticsms that can certainly be applied to some later Dead years as well).
Thanks again, G-Pig.

Very strange to hear two basses on that jam.

The forum available shows I listed above are all great for this year--ie, 1-20/22-68, 8-23-68, 10-12-68 and 12-29-68.
Have fun.

I would pick my current 'top' 68s as:
1-20/22-68
6-14-68
8-23-68
10-12-68
12-29-68
I know that leaves some stellar shows out in the cold, rain and snow, but that is a nice list nonetheless to occupy the player for the month...

What a shame most of the yo-yo's here will not bother checking out the historic and fantastic shows here, even if they have never heard them!
Much more important to find the definitive Shakedown...

I just don't have the will to put down 1973 for more than say...12 hours. :)
1971 was my 1st fall-back position. Then '76 replaced '71. And finally, althought I do wander through the decades, I seem to circle-back to 1973, I'm hooked!
