We just released a test version of a youtube-like interface to most of our movies: we have transcoded the movies into flash format (flv) and offer them through the site when patrons go to a details page. We will also allow others to movies hosted at the archive in their site, as youtube does.

We are looking for comments.

For instance, what do you think of their starting immediately vs having to hit a button to start the video?

Does it work for you? if not, what OS/browser/flash version do you have installed.

Thank you all for helping.

I like this format. thanks so much for your efforts! I like being able to start the video myself without it doing so automatically. However, while there is the choice to rewind, there isn't the option to fast-forward while screening the material. And it would be better if the pieces ran continuously, without buffering, but that's an inconvenience I can live with.

Does not work with Linux Ubuntu Feisty/Firefox 2.0.0.3

Not sure how to find flash version, sorry! youtube.com works,
if that helps. I hope I didn't miss a post by someone with a
solution.

There is nothing wrong with pushing a button. I suppose there
could be a _start without button push checkbox, but it seems
not necessary.

Thanks!

great to have flash now as well - you can still download if you really like a video... ideal for previewing and shorts.

i just had a problem (bug?) after re-deriving a video (also reported the error via the provided link): the re-derived version has no sound, the original derived flash video did have sound.

sometimes the flash video takes too long to load, almost stops, loads some more. that obviously is not ideal...

and it would be great to have a javascript code for embedding the video in blogs etc.

os x, firefox

thanks!

Hi,

Regarding embedding, if you click the image to play the video, you'll see a blue circle with a question marke next to the beta notice. Click that, and you'll get some code that will allow you to embed the flash video on your site.

hi,

thanks!

oh... and: i just found out that my flash video does have sound - my mistake... there is an os x bug after using audacity (sound editor) that resets the internal audio to 96.000hz and then there is no sound for flash video. (solution: utilities folder > audio midi setup > set "format" back to 48.000hz)

sorry...

I think that is more polite to users to let them decide whether they want to start playing the movie within the browser window or whether they prefer to download it, or even, if so they choose, type http://www.msn.com/ in their Location Bar. In this case, however, a javascript control in the page should notify archive.org to force expiry of the users virtual libray card and blacklist his IP address...

I would also like to point out that on Debian Etch, with Firefox 1.5.0.7 and Flash Plugin 9.0 d78 the movie scrollbar does not work: I cannot fast-forwad the movie.

Finally, I think you save a lot of time and disk space if, instead of transcoding mpegs to flashes, you just embedded those in the html page. That's just my 2c worth of wisdom.

And, BTW, thank you very much for the great website!

Using Firefox 2.0.0.3 on XP SP2, Flash player 9

It works with no problems, and I think it's great to be able to watch it easily before I download.

I also think this is much better than YouTube in a some of ways: There's still the option to download the original version, and one has to click to start the film.

I tend to open up lots of pages in tabs, and wouldn't want to have to go through and pause them all, like I have to on YouTube.

So far, though, I've only tried it with "Horror Hotel" at stupid AM.

Opera over Win XP Home. Nothing. But it used to work a few weeks ago on the same config. I agree with an above poster, that it's always better go grab an MPEG-2 and render/burn to DVD. My longtime request, (though fully irrelevant to this thread) is to pre-render to DVD specs or ISOs on archive.org so I wouldn't have to spend hours re-rendering here at home. It would save so many global kilowatts I could hug a tree LOL

Poster: tracey pooh Date: Jul 12, 2007 11:37am
Forum: forums Subject: Re: Flash versions of most movies: pls comment

prolly more info than you want, but.... ;-)

short answer is 4:3 should display and act just as they used to and the deriver changes won't affect them.

so let's talk just flash for now...

what we do is see if the film's "square pixel dimensions"
are 4:3 ratio (or w/i 90% of it).
if so, we make a square pixel 320x240 flash vid.
if not, we "stretch" the width out wider and make a flash vid of a dimension that preserves the aspect ratio.

so for 16:9, we'd make a 426x240 flash vid.

finally, when we make the "flash window" (if you will), we
size it to be 600x240 and say to the plugin "fit the video into that window, while preserving aspect ratio").

so 16:9 vids would "expand" to 426x240, 4:3 vids would "expand" to 320x240.

other sizes are possible/fine, too, eg:
http://www.archive.org/details/sunsetstrip

for films that are narrower than 320x240, we are still
doing the old behaviour of stretching wrongly to 320x240
(because i want to make sure this all works before tackling
"narrow" films).

Otherwise, I think that this is a great option. It seems to play better and sooner that the other streaming formats.

I'd still like to see you offer Quicktime streaming. When I encode a video in H.264, hinted for streaming, archive.org should be able to stream it.

I really don't like this format with at all. I would like to be able to download and watch these on my own computer. Trying to watch a tiny box and fighting to see the text in a movie is awful. And having to sit so close the computer screen gives me a headache. For tutorials, this is especially bad because their are some very small buttons in the interface of Blender, and you need to be able to see which ones are being used. Also, if the videos are not made well (where the video does not match the audio) the small size just increases problems to where it's not worth watching.

It works fine, but it's a little slow... I would much rather have a link to the online player vs. an embedded player on the video's main page. I often open more than one of the feature film pages at the same time, trying to decide which to download. The loss of speed and the cacophony that resulted today was somewhat unnerving. I do like the embedded audio player, but I think I'd prefer an optional start for the video.

Using WINXP with DSL, I am unable to watch many films at all. They often do NOT load automatically, and the extensive buffering is incredibly annoying! One would think that with such a teensy little viewing window that it would run smoothly.

Have a look at this one in particular. The soundtrack begins immediately but no picture ever appears! I've never seen this famous film, and would really like for the members of my screenwriting site to be able to watch it as part of our ongoing Film Studies program.

Go into one of the links on the left, find the file you want and right click/save target as/pick a place.

Then to get rid of that annoying quicktime screen, go into internet explorer/tools/manage plugins/kill that quicktime thing, it will take over everything and stop videos from opening in media player and most times it will give you a Q and a downloading icon on your tray and sit there doing nothing for hours if you let it.

Downloading is easy, uploading seems to be impossible right now.

I recently reformatted my computer, so that may or may not have something to do with why the movies aren't playing all the way through.

Would really love to see the movie, am a huge Bob Hope fan. However, the sync is terribly maladjusted - it plays only approximately 10 seconds of movie, and then you have to sit for approximately one minute for the movie to catch up and play again. Very disconcerting, but love the idea of these archived movies. Live and work overseas, so movies have always been a type of "survival" salvation for me, especially the great comedians Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Doris Day, Meg Ryan, Rock Hudson, Jim Hutton, Shirley Jones, and more...they are great, the stars (the writers and the directors too) don't realize how much they mean to us, even in this day and time, they make us laugh, forget our troubles, and have hope...

I'm running Flash 9.0.28.0 and Firefox 1.5.0.10 on Win Xp (all XP updates installed). So far I've viewed 3 movies, one of which did not load completely even though I set the storage to Unlimited in Flash.
I would much prefer that this download and player open does *not* start automatically, as it uses bandwidth that I would rather use to download the movie on my computer. I have a wireless connection in a rural area.

The other problem with Flash is that there is insufficient control over volume, and no control over brightness and contrast, unlike its competitors. I feel this is a serious drawback.

In "LowLight comparison Panasonic DX1E and Sony HC3 (2007)", the list files load but not play.
The files "dx107, dx110, dx113,dx123.m2ts" is broken. Only file "hd307" play normaly.
My system: PC, windows, IE6.0, Flash 9.0
I think wich problem is conversion of file format.
The great idea of Internet Archive made in one page to have list of files to selection.
Other problem (other topic), is wich i made an item called "highdefinition" and other "highdefinitionpro" and lost the sets. I cant reset this itens or clear to make new upload using this names. Try open that adress i receive the information above:

"The item you have requested had an error:

which prevents us from displaying this page.

If you would like to report this problem as an error report, you may do so here."

This is a classic website BAD IDEA. The enormous PLAY button is blocking things on the webpage. If you have to start putting content in *front* of other content, your page is too full.

What's next, 'Free iPod' ads that we have to peer through like venetian blinds to read the site?

---- also ----

The site is already slow enough without Flash doodads dragging it down even more. I'm sure there's away to put only a link to a YouTube-style video window, instead of loading it at every page visit.

I'm rather strongly opinionated about this because archive.org has always been one of the most gimmick-free, logical, clear, reliable websites. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Hallelujah ! I finally get to watch a video on your site. We've emailed The Archive about how Quicktime just doesn't work well with old versions of Windows (ME) and Windows Media Player 9 is reluctant to play the .mp4 file extension since Apple has sort of branded it. Sure, I need a new computer and system, BUT have you considered that libraries across the country have mostly hand-me-down computers donated by businesses and are mostly Windows with old OS. Libraries are, ethically, the best target for much of what you do; archiving. I suggest that you Change your entire inventory of videos over to Flash with a typical re-sizable player similar to VEOH or JumpCut. (the automatic file quality selection by the player would eliminate the need for so many file options on your page - and the need to jump to your QT embedded player off-page) Be sure to include the Flash code that automatically retrieves the new version of Flash Player so that library computers which are often not set-up well, will display the files. You can redesign and greatly simplify the moving image page format by simply having a full size version of your Flash Player embedded the way all the other sites are doing it. (about 4-500px wide) This is a great way for The Archive to rise above the idiotic format wars between Apple and MS. Microsoft can't even agree with itself on a mobile format (ZUNE?) Keep the H264 files for iPod and one downloadable file in H263 mp4 for the Windows world at large -give it an ".avi" file extension so that ALL versions of Win Media can play it. The audio on Zombies is inadequate - you'll need FM quality which would be 48kb/s stereo at 22,050mhz mp3 which is the minimum for FM Stereo. I love you guys but you need to realize that once you're out of college, Mac isn't the big dog. The open sourcing of Flash by Adobe is commendable and is initially doing for media what .pdf did for print. I have the most recent Flash upgrade because I've just spent 2 weeks researching all the Web Video Hosting Sites, their formats - their policies - their limitations - and their many problems. Best regards and congratulations on a big step in the right direction. VideoB Oh, yeah the autoplay. You have some real good feedback on that already. Lose the animgif and go with an icon gif. I like autoplay myself but they're right - it has to be the only element on a page if you do it. I would like to find out from some techno just how flv compares (overall) in streaming capabilities- packet movement, exchange rate, etc. The buffer preload times seem to be good but not as instant as with streaming players that have adjustable buffers like QT and WM. The start lag for large Flash movie files may be a small price to pay for for more than 95% of all the people on the planet being able to watch them. Streaming breakup is mainly a traffic variable and isn't the main factor in format choice. I hope your members will be able to adjust to the Vulcan Flash philosophy, "The player of the many outways the player of the few, or the one."

Good idea, but the bandwidth issue seems to a problem on the server end.

Also, I'd kill the autoplay functionality. Lots of people would rather download a higher quality version, and you'd save on traffic if you had to click the player to start the stream (a la youtube embeds).

It's also a problem if you open multiple links from a search and they all start playing simultaneously. It's cacophany, I tell you!

My computers have good video cards. There are buffer issues on some videos, but I have pretty good luck overall. I should note that I have buffer issues on Youtube as well. I suspect that if I was on a dial up computer line I might get frustrated with the autoplay. There is an option to turn off thumbnails. Can you give the viewer the same option for the autoplay?

HI, i liked the idea of a flash preview: i call it preview as i cannot imagine to actually watch a movie in a smal box inside a browser windows. The main purpose is downloading the film to keep it and watch it when i like, even when I'm offline.

So, go on getting it work better, as it loaded slowly, only at the second refresh attempt. and i could watch it slightly well, with some re-buffering on the fly.

You have to improve this tool, but i kinda like the idea.

I tried it on a macbook 2ghz 1gb ram, osx 10.4.8 with opera browser, with an adsl connection 12mbit/1mbit.

thank you.

I love the film selection available, but I can't stand watching in fuzzy little windows with constant buffering!

Surely we have the technology by now to offer films in a reasonably sized window!

At the very least, please make sure that the download link actually works!

Hi,
More bad news to report. Personal dislikes aside, it just won't work with my browser for some reason.

Every time I open a page with the embedded player, IE stops working. I just tried upgrading to the newest flash player and it does not work either.

I do not like the flash format becuase I can't successfully watch the content on the TV set via an S-video connection. I'm sure it's my video card, software or whatever, but for some reason I can not get flash content to show up on the tv like windows media player or real player will.

I had a heck of a time getting to this comment section as the player almost instantly crashes my browser.

...from the JavaScript document.write object/embed code. It messes with the framerate. It's very noticeable on my animations. (On my computer, at least.) I'm running a Conroe E6600, by the way. CPU usage is not the issue. On my sites I don't use the Flash transparency and the framerate is true. Adding that parameter causes it to stutter. This is just an issue with Flash and FLV playback, not any specific player.

Behavior: Your preview page paints showing a Flashblock "GO" arrow over the flash display. When I click the "GO" arrow, the flash presentation does not display the movie.

After seeing that, I browsed to youtube.com and checked out a couple of videos there: at that site the flash displays play normally.

Interesting, your player works for a second in my Konqueror browser, which is better than I ususally get from my fav Konqueror browser in this. And I'm on Kubuntu 6.06 having reverted back from Kubuntu 7.xx

Whenever I go to our favorite websites that play Flash files I have to open another type of browser, my other fav being Seamonkey, in which your player is working Flash fine.

Regarding Flash and Konqueror on my system(Kubuntu6.06), it is interesting that our favorite websites' Flash files sometimes play but ususally not and in this installation I cannot get audio, even after some many hours messing with plug-ins and configurations. I take this to be a weakness in Konqueror.

i have one more question:

i still have autoplay for the embedded video (so i guess this was turned on again), but i can't turn it off:

i tried to turn it off as described with "autoplay:false" after "config={" (right after "loop:false,"), but this does not do anything. i also tried "autoplay: false" and "autoplay:false" without a "," after it, but having no "," in the code just breaks the player.

any idea why...?

many thanks - now it works!

(you probably now already saw that the "about/flash.php" page needs to be updated since there it says "autoplay"...)

ok, i now tried again, first it did not work, but while editing the blog post once more it started working. not quite sure why... i'm pretty sure i did not change the original code, i only added a div align="center" code (as i now did again). maybe firefox added some bad characters the first time...? (there used to be this firefox related bug with tags, you could not view "compose" after adding html code for tags but had to "preview" immediately or otherwise the code was broken...) if i find out what first caused the problem i'll post it here. thanks!

No offense, but it sucks. It wont play unless I refresh my page 8million times. Can you come up with a better one. Try google or something. Otherwise the site is really good. We have a wireless connection here, so it is not slow when it does play
