We just released a test version of a youtube-like interface to most of our movies: we have transcoded the movies into flash format (flv) and offer them through the site when patrons go to a details page. We will also allow others to movies hosted at the archive in their site, as youtube does.
We are looking for comments.
For instance, what do you think of their starting immediately vs having to hit a button to start the video?
Does it work for you? if not, what OS/browser/flash version do you have installed.
Thank you all for helping.

Not sure how to find flash version, sorry! youtube.com works,
if that helps. I hope I didn't miss a post by someone with a
solution.
There is nothing wrong with pushing a button. I suppose there
could be a _start without button push checkbox, but it seems
not necessary.
Thanks!

i just had a problem (bug?) after re-deriving a video (also reported the error via the provided link): the re-derived version has no sound, the original derived flash video did have sound.
sometimes the flash video takes too long to load, almost stops, loads some more. that obviously is not ideal...
and it would be great to have a javascript code for embedding the video in blogs etc.
os x, firefox
thanks!

Hi,
Regarding embedding, if you click the image to play the video, you'll see a blue circle with a question marke next to the beta notice. Click that, and you'll get some code that will allow you to embed the flash video on your site.

oh... and: i just found out that my flash video does have sound - my mistake... there is an os x bug after using audacity (sound editor) that resets the internal audio to 96.000hz and then there is no sound for flash video. (solution: utilities folder > audio midi setup > set "format" back to 48.000hz)
sorry...

I would also like to point out that on Debian Etch, with Firefox 1.5.0.7 and Flash Plugin 9.0 d78 the movie scrollbar does not work: I cannot fast-forwad the movie.
Finally, I think you save a lot of time and disk space if, instead of transcoding mpegs to flashes, you just embedded those in the html page. That's just my 2c worth of wisdom.
And, BTW, thank you very much for the great website!

It works with no problems, and I think it's great to be able to watch it easily before I download.
I also think this is much better than YouTube in a some of ways: There's still the option to download the original version, and one has to click to start the film.
I tend to open up lots of pages in tabs, and wouldn't want to have to go through and pause them all, like I have to on YouTube.
So far, though, I've only tried it with "Horror Hotel" at stupid AM.

What is even more annoying is that I cannot download either without being prompted to accept a plug in. Why for heavens sake?
I can play just about any and every video format file in existence already. And no, I do not want or need Real Player or Quicktime, I came here for video, not malware.
I use many other sites and this is the only one I have a problem with.

Hi Brewster,
This is Dorothy Fadiman I waited minutes (?) and finally got it started...at 23 sec. it froze...then I waited a couple of minutes and it played again and froze at 34 seconds...as I write I am waiting for it to play again. You may know my work (I have LOTS of films at internet archive FADIMAN SOCIAL DOCUMENTARIES...ONE SET OF FIVE AIDS IN ETHIOPIA IS IN TWO LANGUAGES...THAT'S TEN). OK after three minutes it played from 34 sec to 45 seconds. If you go to my site, you will see that I send LOTS of people to internet archive
www.concentric.org so I do want to untangle what is going on.
Thanks.

short answer is 4:3 should display and act just as they used to and the deriver changes won't affect them.
so let's talk just flash for now...
what we do is see if the film's "square pixel dimensions"
are 4:3 ratio (or w/i 90% of it).
if so, we make a square pixel 320x240 flash vid.
if not, we "stretch" the width out wider and make a flash vid of a dimension that preserves the aspect ratio.
so for 16:9, we'd make a 426x240 flash vid.
finally, when we make the "flash window" (if you will), we
size it to be 600x240 and say to the plugin "fit the video into that window, while preserving aspect ratio").
so 16:9 vids would "expand" to 426x240, 4:3 vids would "expand" to 320x240.
other sizes are possible/fine, too, eg:
http://www.archive.org/details/sunsetstrip
for films that are narrower than 320x240, we are still
doing the old behaviour of stretching wrongly to 320x240
(because i want to make sure this all works before tackling
"narrow" films).

Otherwise, I think that this is a great option. It seems to play better and sooner that the other streaming formats.
I'd still like to see you offer Quicktime streaming. When I encode a video in H.264, hinted for streaming, archive.org should be able to stream it.
Thanks for your great public service.

Then to get rid of that annoying quicktime screen, go into internet explorer/tools/manage plugins/kill that quicktime thing, it will take over everything and stop videos from opening in media player and most times it will give you a Q and a downloading icon on your tray and sit there doing nothing for hours if you let it.
Downloading is easy, uploading seems to be impossible right now.

This can be fixed - because youTube works just fine under FireFox on Linux.

I would much prefer that this download and player open does *not* start automatically, as it uses bandwidth that I would rather use to download the movie on my computer. I have a wireless connection in a rural area.
The other problem with Flash is that there is insufficient control over volume, and no control over brightness and contrast, unlike its competitors. I feel this is a serious drawback.

The site is already slow enough without Flash doodads dragging it down even more. I'm sure there's away to put only a link to a YouTube-style video window, instead of loading it at every page visit.
I'm rather strongly opinionated about this because archive.org has always been one of the most gimmick-free, logical, clear, reliable websites. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Also, I'd kill the autoplay functionality. Lots of people would rather download a higher quality version, and you'd save on traffic if you had to click the player to start the stream (a la youtube embeds).
It's also a problem if you open multiple links from a search and they all start playing simultaneously. It's cacophany, I tell you!

I'm sitting here with music playing via iTunes as I check out additions to the Archive. The addition of the movie sound track does not improve my iTunes listening experience :-)

So, go on getting it work better, as it loaded slowly, only at the second refresh attempt. and i could watch it slightly well, with some re-buffering on the fly.
You have to improve this tool, but i kinda like the idea.
I tried it on a macbook 2ghz 1gb ram, osx 10.4.8 with opera browser, with an adsl connection 12mbit/1mbit.
thank you.

I love the film selection available, but I can't stand watching in fuzzy little windows with constant buffering!
Surely we have the technology by now to offer films in a reasonably sized window!
At the very least, please make sure that the download link actually works!
I have DSL on WinXP.

More bad news to report. Personal dislikes aside, it just won't work with my browser for some reason.
Every time I open a page with the embedded player, IE stops working. I just tried upgrading to the newest flash player and it does not work either.
I do not like the flash format becuase I can't successfully watch the content on the TV set via an S-video connection. I'm sure it's my video card, software or whatever, but for some reason I can not get flash content to show up on the tv like windows media player or real player will.
I had a heck of a time getting to this comment section as the player almost instantly crashes my browser.

param name="wmode" value="transparent"
...from the JavaScript document.write object/embed code. It messes with the framerate. It's very noticeable on my animations. (On my computer, at least.) I'm running a Conroe E6600, by the way. CPU usage is not the issue. On my sites I don't use the Flash transparency and the framerate is true. Adding that parameter causes it to stutter. This is just an issue with Flash and FLV playback, not any specific player.

This isn't an issue with your browser, our wires got crossed somewhere along the way and the wrong files ended up in this item. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find the original movie that was supposed to be there, so I've just taken this item off the site. Sorry about that!

Have you tried hitting play and then hitting the pause button? The clip will continue downloading while you have it paused, and then you can hit play a few minutes later and generally have a much better viewing experience.
Thanks,
Alexis

I've written recently and thought I'd emphasize the need I have for being able to fast forward AND screen the material simultaneously. Simply having the option to move forward along the timeline (to that footage not yet screened) would be a huge benefit.
Thanks,
Quinn

and Flash (Linux 9,0,31,0) Flashblock 1.5.2
Behavior: Your preview page paints showing a Flashblock "GO" arrow over the flash display. When I click the "GO" arrow, the flash presentation does not display the movie.
After seeing that, I browsed to youtube.com and checked out a couple of videos there: at that site the flash displays play normally.

Whenever I go to our favorite websites that play Flash files I have to open another type of browser, my other fav being Seamonkey, in which your player is working Flash fine.
Regarding Flash and Konqueror on my system(Kubuntu6.06), it is interesting that our favorite websites' Flash files sometimes play but ususally not and in this installation I cannot get audio, even after some many hours messing with plug-ins and configurations. I take this to be a weakness in Konqueror.
Cheers

It gets in the way of my enjoyment of this site.
99% of the time, I find myself fumbling with the mouse
to turn it off.
We download and then play films with WinAmp
set to full-screen.

i still have autoplay for the embedded video (so i guess this was turned on again), but i can't turn it off:
i tried to turn it off as described with "autoplay:false" after "config={" (right after "loop:false,"), but this does not do anything. i also tried "autoplay: false" and "autoplay:false" without a "," after it, but having no "," in the code just breaks the player.
any idea why...?
