This is a must have show from 1980 in Long Beach CA. Check out the monster Scarlet>Fire on this great aud recording. The whole show is a keeper and is downloadable from the archive. http://www.archive.org/details/gd80-12-13.nak700.miller.13412.sbeok.shnf Also of note is this gem from Atlanta. part Aud part SBD and also todays anniversary show! http://www.archive.org/details/gd80-11-30.sbd-aud.sacks.2416.sbeok.shnf

hi jd,

that 12/13 is huge. Sugaree, To Lay Me Down, KILLER Scarlet > Fire, and, though I'm a bit tired of the tune, a fantastic Sugar Mag.

good call.

Good call. The second set is mind-blowing. Peak stuff and an outstanding recording. Must have in my opinion. Sugaree holds its own with the Lake Placid monster.

Here are a couple of links to threads re: early/old AUDs on the archive: http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=146747 http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=146747 My personal recommendation (and one tape that I discovered through the latter thread) is 11/8/70. The Truckin' > Dark Star > Main Ten > Dancin' simply RIPS. http://www.archive.org/details/gd1970-11-08.aud.weiner.28609.sbeok.shnf

The link provided by bluedevil really is a great starting point. I'm sure these are on there, but 5/3/69, 8/5/71, 8/6/71, 7/1/73, 6/22/74, and 6/23/74 are all prime examples of outstanding audience recordings made during an era when such things were few and far between.

5/3/69 is only a partial show but apparently the guy was able to place his mics directly on the stage- the vocals are a little low but otherwise the sound is so good that this tape is frequently mistaken for a soundboard (there's still about 5% of me that's suspicious).

8/6/71 is commonly cited as possibly the best audience recording from any era. Great example of the taper (Rob Bertrando) being in THE perfect spot of THE perfect venue on THE perfect night. 8/5 is nearly as good, but the show isn’t quite as hot.

I'm not a taper but it seems to me there must have been a substantial breakthrough in the portable technology around '79 or '80 because the number of good, clear audience tapes begins to increase substantially after that.

I'd have to put in for yesterday's anniversary show from Alligator Alley in 1980. The quality of the AUD source is only outdone by the quality of the show itself. There are so many outstanding AUD's here, it's hard to just name a few (I'm sure someone will link you to a previous discussion of this topic that includes a list of some better examples). Oh, yeah, and if it says it was taped by Jim Wise, chances are it doesn't suck.

Not sure how up to date this list is, but found it to be a good pointer in the right direction

May 81 was a magical month and almost all the shows are impeccable and have fantastic AUD sources here. Can't go wrong here.

And what about September? http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-09-25.aud.jim.13725.sbeok.shnf is a personal fave, and not just because I'm an alum. Sound starts off iffy, but resolves and really gives you a "you were there" feel. First set is a smoker with killer Birdsong, Cumberland, Passenger and an explosive Music Never Stopped. Nice twist with a Wheel>Sugar Mag>Black Peter>Around & Around>Sunshine Daydream out of Space.

thanks SDH.

where has this show been? I must have missed it when I went through 81. unbelievable set list.

looks like we might have a TMNS that rivals the late 77, early 78 versions?

I'll definitely have to check this one out tonight.
