I have two favorites- the version from "Without A Net" is a true standout, and also Compton Terrace '92:

-the '92 version is really kind of gritty with some exciting slide work from Weir.

Pat,

Thanks for this rec. I was at this show and listened once I found the site. I remember most of the first set and the weekend for that matter being "sterile". Not bad but more GD lite. I will check out this version of Althea again to see what I may have missed.

Hey Lobster-

The show isn't a total winner, but for me the highlights were FOTD (they could've done it a capella at any show and I would still love the tune), Althea, Uncle John's and Last Time.

Agreed and Bob's voice is cooked. I do think this second set is probably the best of the "comeback" tour. I know the DP release with the Shakedown gets a lot of pub but I like the pre drums section of the Compton terrace gig. The playing reprise is pretty long, I think 8 or 9 mins.

I really enjoy the one on the Road Trips Fall 1979 release.. I believe the date is 10/31/79. It is on the bonus disc.

Well, since no one else mentioned it, 5/1/81 is pretty outrageous.

Gotta second this 5/1/81 call--my fave Althea and maybe the best-sounding AUD on all the LMA.

5 star show...also check out the LIG>DEAL

My fav is another from the Greeks. Some tatsy licks and a happy Jerry.

He had been attacked by a giant tootsie roll the day before and was in a marvelous mood for the closer of another sweet Berkeley run.

I'm looking forward to the recommendations, although the last thread on this still left me with the "Without A Net" as the favorite.

On "Without a Net" you don't get the crowd response (howling at the moon?), which is cool to hear after all these years of only hearing the official version. Thanks.

I never get tired of recommending my favorite show: lovely Althea, one of the all-time great China Cat-Riders and an insanely ripping Ramble On Rose lead. If you haven't heard this show before, turn it UP!:

now I gotta listen to that 3-28-81 that everyone else is pushing ...

Best ever is 3-28-81
very close 2nd is 7-1-80 (no one seems to know about this, so give it a listen)
Honorable Mention goes to 7-13-81

There will be a pile of replies to this, but to start the ball rolling, I've always liked this one http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-03-28.fm.hanno.3306.sbefail.shnf

Hear the Althea, stay for Deal.

What is that can of spray by Jerry? It looks like he's got cheese wiz on top of his amp.

Its called "finger ease"
you spray it on the fret board for lightning fast riffs

If Jerry didn't use it, his guitar would probably burst into flames due to the friction!

I'm not sure which date exactly but the 5/14, 5/15, or 5/16 from Nassau 1980 has a good one (maybe all 3 are good). Not sure which of the Archive versions is best - I'll leave that to you.

The one at Bill Graham's funeral show is just crushing. It's in 1991 somewhere.

Found it - Oct. 27th 1991.

A ripping cassidy, touch of grey and China Rider as well. That's a good show, the first set is 90's gold.
