Dead community,

I am the Digital Librarian of the Internet Archive and having the fantastic outpouring of support from music creators and lovers has been a high point in the last couple of years for our Archive and for me personally.

Recently there has been a great deal of excitement around the grateful dead and related performances. This excitement has sometimes turned sour as some may have felt that they do not know as much about what is going on as they would like.

Please be aware that everyone involved is working to keep a great tradition, non-commercial tape trading, alive and growing. Your respect for the work of others is key. Some may be frustrated in not knowing as much about as they would like, but what we are all striving for is in concert with the culture we all enjoy. There are just going to be some experiments and changes.

That said, we would appreciate toning down comments, or even letting slide, some of the evolving changes we are all experiencing. I really do believe that if we are respectful and flexible we can build an even more robust system than we have now.

A side story-- my 10 year old son picked Jerry Garcia as the person he wanted to study in-depth for his "person in profile" segment of 4th grade, largely because the dead pioneered sharing so much of what they did. Together, we read the Jason Blair biography, the oral history book, as well as watched all the movies. I never thought of myself as a deadhead, but I have to say I am impressed. There was a coolness, an unruffledness, that must have been hard to maintain through drug busts, the vietnam war, the difficulty of being on the road all the time. Channelling that coolness can be helpful at times. Anyway, I have enclosed a photo of my son playing Jerry in front of this whole school in a Q&A with a young Einstein. I have never been more proud.

In that spirit (not to be too corny), "been thinkin’, you got to mellow slow. Takes time, you pick a place to go..." So, we are taking some time.

Thank you all for building something great. Lets keep doing it.

-brewster

Thanks for all you do with the Archives. This incredible access has changed my life and allows the kind of sonic exploration a Deadhead thrives on. However, I am distressed at the loss of 8/27/1972 and still do not have a clear picture as to why these shows were removed. We all understand experiments and changes but I see no clear explanation where this is going and what it means. Will more shows disappear? Will they return? Maybe I missed something in your statement of explanation. Again, thanks for all your efforts on behalf of the music and listening community.

8/27/72 is on GDlive.com. Get it while you can! Also 4/8/72 is on there as well.

Given its long trading history and popularity, 8/27/72 is also probably one of the top-owned items in Deadhead traders' collections.

Indeed, checking the "Get a Recommendation" function at db.etree.org shows this item currently owned by 14.07% of all traders listed there.

Of course, it's only #2 behind (drumroll)... 5/8/77 at 18.26%. (BTW those % numbers are *huge* in the scheme of things there.)

VERY well said Brewster. Thanks for all you have done. This has all been like a dream, and I thank the spirits every morning that this dream of a digital music archive exists.

Let's all be happy for what we have

Einstein's looking over to Jerry thinkin', "Man, you're pretty cool." "Could I borrow that headband, man?"

Thanks for the kind advice to the group...it is great what ya'll offer up here and I'll do my best to keep it goin'.

"That said, we would appreciate toning down comments, or even letting slide, some of the evolving changes we are all experiencing."

Toning down? Couldn't agree with you more.
Letting slide? I suspect that's a little unrealistic.
People are gonna notice things changing, and they're bound to ask about them.
You're not obliged to answer, of course (though you're usually quite good about it.)
But if you expect people to think, "Ah, the Dead shows dropped from 2600 to 2500, and entire runs are gone. I won't say anything" ... well, people are bound to ask.
Hopefully they'll keep it civil.

I started that whole thread about the Live Dead run, and now I feel kinda guilty. I don't think my post had an offensive tone toward anyone, or at least I hope not, that wasn't my intent. I have those shows already, so it doesn't bother me much. I think it's important to consider that most people aren't angry about not getting shows for themselves in a selfish way, but are really thinking about people who they wish to spread the music to. So they are really thinking for others. That's gotta count for something.

Great photos. Would have thought they were vintage except for dead giveaway that Garcia was probably never that close to a washing machine.
I appreciate your post and comments. I agree with the toning down part. It's unfortunate that you are the recipients of allot of venting since your not actually the targets, however GDP doesn't respond to comments and y'all do, Thanks. Thanks also for your civil tone, something that we and some of your other staff who shall remain nameless should try to follow. Thanks for all you guys do.

Thanks also for your civil tone, something that we and some of your other staff who shall remain nameless should try to follow Just to clarify - On this thread which got a little heated: http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=29989 Only 3 staff/volunteers with archive.org were involved in the discussion - myself, Diana Hamilton and Matt Vernon. I hope none of us gave you this perception of uncivility, we try hard to keep a clear head when issues like this arise. (personally, I find nothing of either Diana or Matt's posts offensive, so either I need to tone down my own posts, or maybe you confused someone else as "staff") -Brad

Your right Brad, I realize that it was my mistake in misinterpreting what another had written in response to some of my rants. I’ve e-mailed an apology to same. That's one of the downsides of this method of communication, it's easy to misunderstand others intents, or tone.
Keep up the great work this site is a treasure to many.
