Re: St. Stephen Poll! |
I prefer the Mystery Disc versions too, but the Fillmore West '69 style suits me too, depending on mood. Much as I love '76, the StSts. of that year are just too....damn....slow (even 7/18). I always think of it as a "rocker," not a laid-back groove song. And I adore Donna, but she's no help on that number.

Re: St. Stephen Poll! |
I'm quite partial to 10-12-68, but that might just be because it's embedded in one of the greatest concerts they ever did.
Actually one of the reasons I love it so much is because of the weird talking they they do during - right before Lady Finger something goes wrong with the sound I think and Weir comments on it very audibly... and then later on during the pause right after "another man spills" Weir says "funniest thing I ever heard..." I have no idea what he was talking about but it's great. Also it's just a stellar performance overall.

Yeah, I really like what they did with it in late 70 and some of the 71s too...almost listen to those more, along with 68 than all the 69 ones that, dare I say, almost become routine.

But there's nothing quite like a good St. Stephen/The Eleven to get your blood flowing, and for that, you have to go to '69 (and it better have the William Tell Overture section too, bruddah!) :)

Re: St. Stephen Poll! |
I dunno--I think the StSt's change enough for me to find the 68 ones more attractive, and then we just hear sooo many in 69 that are relatively uniform (note to self: I do this way too much...might need to listen to something else). But 70 & 71 seem to have new life in them.
Nonetheless, as a tandem, you are right: tranny to NFAway can be good (9-19-70) but the Eleven is certainly better!

Re: St. Stephen Poll! |
Love it...defn 6-14-68. Poor quality AUD here, but the energy and what Jerry does with the lead puts all other StSt's in a whole new light (ie, of WTF? This is great, but why did the amazing lead change to this relatively more timid [though again--fantastic!] approach?).
Check the mystery disk versions, two, in the second to last collection posted here under 1968 to hear better quality versions of the 6-14 version.
After that, for straight up versions of the song in the spirit of the various early era incarnations, I prefer the one from 9-19-70.
Just don't restrict yourself to those post 71...argh!

With you on 10/29/77, Eric....I've still never heard a better one, and yes, it is like a "blues" version.
I'd agree with 1/22/78 as a 2nd place.

Live/Dead...mostly because that's where I heard it first and it grabbed me. Have listened to lots of others which are probably "better", but keep coming back to that one, it's kind of like home for me.

10-29-77! The guitar trill leading into St. Stephen, Phil and the drums coming to a complete stop before launching into NFA, great sequence!

Re: St. Stephen Poll! |
Always a great tune, but one I kind of like is the 9/18/70 Fillmore East version when Jerry starts chuckling during the bridge and says "Really" probably in response to some remark from the audience. That one always makes me smile. The "definitive" versions for me are the "Live/Dead" version and I also love the studio version from Aoxomoxoa with Bobby paying homage to Big Brother & The Holding Co. with his yelps and screams.
One small annoyance to me is folks referring all the time to the "William Tell section". The so-called William Tell" part is simply the opening verses of "The Eleven". Back when the Live/Dead L.P. came out there was a lyric sheet included. The opening verse of The Eleven begins with the "high green chilly winds..." part that references William Tell later in the verse. Every now and then I can actually download a show that is correctly tracked to reflect that. Maybe Hunter included the lyrics on Live/Dead just for that reason, so that readers would know what lyric belongs to which song. That was to the best of my memory the only time the Dead ever included a lyric sheet with any of their albums, but only the lyrics to Hunter's three original compositions, Dark Star,St Stephen, and The Eleven.

Re: St. Stephen Poll! |
The main reason I refer to the William Tell Section (I consider it part of The Eleven too, I have that lyric sheet! :)) like that is because:
1) As you say, it is often incorrectly tracked at the END of St. Stephen
2) Sometimes they start The Eleven without it...

Just want you to know I didn't mean you specifically, or anyone in particular for that matter. Even the Live/Dead album is tracked wrong as far as that goes, leading to the kind of confusion Hunter probably tried to clear up by having the lyrics printed to begin with. Just a petty complaint on my part, but I respect Hunter's lyrics. Too many people think The Eleven begins with "No more time to tell how.."
