This is a nice Second Set Opening version, with some great Brent keys and the Texas skies to get things rolling. This is really one of Weir/Barlow's best and at times a real show stealer. Looking for some other versions I might not have heard...

Stranger openers almost ALWAYS meant hottness would follow by the heaping helping. Anyone know of a particlarly long one? That hits maybe 12 minutesw? seems like its always around 9. BTW - love from without a net Brent saying "long, long ,crazy, crazy ,TOUR!"!!!

3/9/81 and 5/1/81 are worth checking out

I think the definitive version of this tune is:

I've listened to it a lot and there's no miscues or missed notes it's "just exactly perfect".

alot of people go to this one or the 10-15-1983 one as the best version...

Wow that 10-18 Stranger really cooks. Lovin' Jerry's phat 84 tones.

The jam in this one gets pretty hot http://www.archive.org/details/gd1987-03-02.sbd-mtx.walker-scotton.miller.82729.sbeok.flac16

Thanks for the suggestion. Listening to 81 > 83 > 84 > 87 evolution of this song is pretty cool. The jam goes from a Shakedown-funk feel pre-coma to a near Slipknot frenzy in the '87. Need to hear more to see if this is actually a trend.

I enjoyed that version you posted... been diggin' 84 recently and the Strangers are great. It's interesting to see how the vibe of the song changed distinctly in the span of 3 years.

Phil on his 6 string can be a great thing :)

Listening right now to the Marin Show. This Stranger is slow and silky. Very Fat and cool Brent tones at about 6 minutes!!! Yikes!

The jam building to this moment has this certain, "what's next?" vibe to it and indeed, Mydland lays what appears to be a clutch of golden eggs at about 6:00 into Stranger.

Phil on his 6 string is the best thing, sometimes.
