I'm obsessed with Deal. Maybe not the most profound song ever written, but it thrums in my head all day long.

I bet some of you folks have a list of your favorite Deals you want to share with me? :) Or fascinating lore/trivia associated with this song?

I was shocked to see this one from the swing hadn't been mentioned. Awkwardly, its not the playing in this one that grabbed me but the vocals.

It closes out the first set with a bang. On the final creshchendo for about 2 verses, bob and donna really scream. If anyone can show me versions where the ending is done similar to this epicness please do.

assume Strat is referring to this show in that thread (not 11/17/78) re - "old school", Jer’s solo across the changes goes for 3 rounds instead of the usual 2...awesome!

I always feel left out of the Deal discussions. I have to admit that it's one of the few songs that markedly improved into the later era. The performances from the 80's are clearly better and more jammed out than the early era performances of the song. I'm sure the 80's zealots will be able to produce some fine renditions for you!

Still I'm more inclined to listen to the '71 performances at the Fillmore West or Harding Theatre...

I don't know. I'm more inclined to early era myself. Have been listening to the Europe '72 disks and at first I thought the Deal was too slow, lacking its later pizazz. But it's grown on me, and I have to admit, after checking out some of these 80's versions this afternoon, I think maybe the 71's and 72's win after all.

Sold! This one is the winner.
I've concluded this is the way that song is supposed to sound. A bit slower, but a fuller sound. I'm definitely into '71 at the moment.
Off to listen to the rest of the show ... great stuff.

Am I the only one who gets childishly excited when the band is introduced?
rhetorical question - I don't think I'm the only one ...
My son tries to skip the intro and I'm slapping his hand ... I want to pretend I'm there.
(I know, get a life ...)

Robert Hunter would agree with you...

"In songs like 'Deal,' there are almost definate instructions being given on how to approach things. This is the only gift that I can give in that way."

Not sure I would though. In spite of my loathing of 80's Grateful Dead, I still concede that the song was better during the late era.

I feel the same way...there just aren't that many that grab me before my "era's up"...

As a studiophile, I also have never gotten over the original, from his first solo album, since I think it has such a crisp, unique sound, and I listened to it so much before ever hearing any live ones myself.

So, no brainer for me: I put the orig track on all my "Jerry Mixes" (from tapes in the 70s, to CDs for newbies almost 40 yrs later!).

I guess you didn't get any "lore", but I will pull a Bacon on you, and transfer (re: hijack) to Loser, and the reliance on the Q of Diamonds (he's not gonna lose, right?), whereas, to Baconite it, in Desperado (whatever you think of the tune/Eagles/others that do it), "she" is NOT your best bet...rather, the Q of Hearts.

I always think of that trivia when listening to Deal/Loser, and of course, have always bet on the QD rather than the QH since hearing it...

How's that for far afield?

excerpt from Annotated GD Lyrics (D. Dodd)

[[[4. inside straight
An inside straight is a drawing hand in poker with a single missing rank to draw a straight. A hand with an ace, a king, a jack, and a ten would need a queen to fill an inside straight. This is how the player knows he will not lose, the card on the top of the deck has the shine of the queen of diamonds, so he knows he will make his hand even though it is a statistical long shot. Good poker players will almost never draw to an inside straight.]]]

the queen of hearts is all about warmth (only privy to the dealer) but the queen of diamonds is the gal that shines!

Also Branford adds a lot to this tune on the 1991 show from MSG
