Is this Oprah or what? Many of the great Jazzmen used for whatever reason - Comfort, Inspiration - Sleep who cares!

Simply enjoy the gift of the music for what it was, a gift! Tell me one soul in this audience who hasn't indulged from time-to-time? Who amongst us has provided a legacy the pallet size of this Band?

The Dead are the classic American Band who evolved over four decades. The sixties being defined by the acid drenched blues groove and their first frontman, Ron McKernan, who also defined the sound of this period. Yes, their instrumental improv exploded during 68-69, but a change was a comin in 1970-1971.

1971 ushered in the era of one Keith Godchaux who is arguably the finest Grateful Dead piano player. The 70's witnessed an evolution of a band who evolved as songsmiths and song craftsmen, with an emphasis on the telling of the tale and vocal harmonies.

However, throughout the years, stage left to one Jerome John Garcia proved to be a volatile seat, so usher in the 80's and the great white bluesman, Brent Mydland. The Brent years evolved in the way the band interacted with their audience, inspired by the "new guy" who produced an amazing sound on the Hammond B-3.

Once again, stage left took it's toll on another fragile human being. Thank you Mr. Mydland for all that you gave to us in terms of sheer ecstasy and joy!

The 90's proved "uno mas for the gipper" the escalation to larger arenas and stadiums provided more space for all the newbies to jump on the bus. Once again, the 90's were defined by the sound of stage left, Vince Welnik.

Add to the mix, all of Garcia's side projects and studio sessions. The New Riders, Old & In The Way, Wally Heider Studio jam sessions, Merl Saunders, Garcia Band, Garcia Acoustic Band, David Grisman etc. etc. etc. Garcia is the consumate artist. Do we judge the great by their artistry or personal habits?

We had a barrel of fun in the 60's, a plethora of fun in the 70's, wild adventures in the 80's, and one more good run in the 90's. We should all be so lucky as to have this much fun in our lifetimes. Too young for Vietnam, old enough for Rock n Roll.

In sum, the Grateful Dead were defined by the keyboard players who inspired Jerry, Bob, Phil, Billy & Mickey. Their evolution as musicians is incomparable to any other act in the history of Rock n Roll.

Set yourself free, let the music speak directly to you!

"Do we judge the great by their artistry or personal habits?"

I think the missing word for around here is AND. It was the personal habits of the GD that made them what they were and what they became. I watched it when it was happening and I sometimes think about it now when I'm abusing my ears. Your way just creates idols.

Ah ha! That's MY problem...

I note that classic parental refrain: "do as I say, not as I do" (please, don't write in, hypocrite haters)...it's hard to explain, with a straight face, how different the drug scene was in 1969 than it is today. I recall how I never ever saw a gun in a deal til the mid to late 70s. I then knew it was much more than the fun and games, and juvenile (in a good way) road of experimentation and exploration it represented in those earlier years. And witnessing the deaths of a few loved ones proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that indeed drugs were not for everyone, even in those earlier yrs. And don't get me started on the prescrip drug craze sweeping the HS's of today...sure, it's still sometimes a rite of passage of sorts, a means of expanding--moving out from under parental control, blah, blah, blah, but it is often something much more negative, something altogether different from the cliche mind expanding opportunity and too often a form of self medication for serious issues, etc., etc.

Arm Chair Doc's rant over.

Yes--ie, when buying, would notice a gun on the table or wherever...clearly, the local dealer was not the ave kid I'd known when I was younger. Just realized "whoaaa...we're not in Kansas anymore" or something like that...

Perhaps, but the key phrase was "one soul in this audience." I've never heard of BC having been part of "this audience," whereas Ann Coulter is a self-described Deadhead who claims never to have indulged in anything more than what you might find at the country club bar. Far be it from me to doubt Ann Coulter's, um, truthiness ...

I thought we decided the plethora of fun was in the 80's and that the 70's were more filled with the wild adventures. But, Hey i might be wrong-headed on this one...

Can one really say "we had a plethora of fun?"

Where's Rob? Is he gonna let that stand?
