Notes
Digitally remastered using a custom built, Dual-DAW, nicknamed Bertha, by jashley@deadacated.com. Completed on April 16, 2005.
Although the sound of the original source is very good, the mix is a bit of a kick mix and the low bass was not able to be brought up without having an obtrusively thumping kick. Some compenstation was made in the mid bass frequencies which resulted in a nice balance between the bass and the kick.

I got on the bus June 28, 1985 in Hershey PA and for me the Brent years were the "best" but now if I could go back and do a full year tour (always stayed close to home in Philly and tri state area) - it would be 1977. Donna gets trashed alot and that is a shame - I get it a little but not really - by and large I think she is wonderful and Keith too. I did see her in Boulder with DSO qt Red Rocks just few years ago as DSO redid the Dead's 1977 Red Rocks show - Dead and Co a few days later in Boulder and caught David Gans on Pearl Street. Hey, maybe that 77 show is next.
Subject: Read between the LINES..
Other copies too much audience
or not enough soul.
This is just freakin right!
Over the top set lists.
If I was doing a fantasy list the 1st set is close to perfect.
Bertha >Good Lovin-opener (especially LOVIN' drippin..
Row Jimmy-They are drifting on the lyrics here but this tune after that high octane double shot opener has the dancin fools double clutching in a hurry.
Is the slide all that bad? It has a nice bent IMHO
Minglewood-Such a bad ass tune, lost some of its luster in later years but so wickedly hot here.
"Preacher man call me a sinner
but his little girl called me a saint"
There was this guy on tour circa 1989
Dread Locks, White Rasta
Had the sweetest blond headed girlfriend
This tune reminds me of that guy.
Also the "Do you have a dollar, man"
although when he started asking sista's
for more then $
He got smacked right in the face.
That was awkward!
Jed-Not sure this tune ever sounded as good after Europe 72, I have a sneaking suspicion that whatever PIGPEN contributed to this song gave it that x-factor/
Other thing might be that Phil's vocals went missing on this tune I think after 1973.
Anyhow, There were certain nights they played this in the 80's that it hit home, In a way it is like the Southern National Anthem. The Dead's Version of Sweet Home Alabama.
The band feeling it.
Donna added a little extra at the end of Jed.
Lightning>Supplication- one of the most underrated tunes in the repertoire and yes it is Bob & Donna that give this tune its crackle like static electric.
"Really get me high!!!"
Love the placement here, mid set
Jerry throwing down great guitar work
and even dabbling vocally..
The Supplication jam sets Jerry loose
Of all the tunes to drop from the rotation,,Augh!
Great tune selection for the last 4 songs of the set
This is a feisty Jack-A-Roe .
Phils bass leading counterpoint.
This is just thick! (Prelude to IKO)
Passenger-If this is a Weir tune in the rotation
it certainly is an all round group effort
and a product of the Phil Zone
JERRY "And why the F@ck not"
Always like the way the Rhythm Section kicks this.
To me it is the 77 version of the early 70's G-Set.
The off mic banter is really thick.
B.E. Women- another tune that rocked on Europe 72 tour. but unlike JED I felt like JERRY almost always could get to my heart strings straight into 1990 with this number. --Donna Jean along side doesn't hurt. This version has a punch to it. Almost like Phil slapping his bass. and somebody perhaps Weir slashing away on the fret board.
"Looks like the old man's getting on".
When Garcia sang that in the 90's
I cried almost every freaking time.
They tune for Dancin' straight away.
Perfect tune selection.
Dancin' becomes Shakedown in 78
The Disco Ball and all..
But really FUNK..
These versions have no relation to the PIG & Bobby versions from 1970 (MIT Steps my favorite)
and they also have no relation to the 1985 versions.
(Frost Amphitheatre-A+)
It is a really good tune to follow thru the years.
And Jerry's 1st jam is fiesty, followed quickly by the Phil Zone and the Rhythm Section.
The common denominator for all versions is they could ride this tune. Wow, they bring it down a little probably to avoid crowd discorporation. Found a groove with more funk. Garcia noodling. Where can they go from here?
10 minutes in and my eyes are wide open. gee i wonder if DJG danced her way thru this? They sound like they are looking for the vocal reentry Garcia hitting it even harder.. about 12:25 ready for more lyrics. Bob's gonna need some help? 14:00 might be there but not just yet. 14:45 Bob with Donna & Jerry.. Wow , that is pretty slick. Kinda anti-climactic after this because they already ripped everybody's face from their heads.
Oh, my how hot is that!!! They are stretching it.
Damn, what else but a mini meltdown to close.
2nd set
How often did they go with Estimated>Eyes
as a Second Set opener.
It probably happened more than I realize
but from my perspective of going to shows in the 80's
I was not aware of it.
73 & 77 my favorite years for Eyes. Probably a Phil thing but i can't quantify it
This has a lovely lead in with both Jerry and especially Phil bringing the song to its vocals.
Mostly DJG doing the backing vocals here.
Beautiful jam about the 12 minute mark
just before the drummers get busy with the BIG DRUMS
Drumz>Samson=ultimate in drummers in the lead.
Perfect intro to Samson & Delilah.
Never met a Samson that didn't fire me up!
Not sure how fast you can move
but I could cut the rug during this one.
Normally Ship of Fools would be my last pick
for the 2nd set
but here it is in the last ballad of the night slot
with still a whole lot more music to come
so it works here --for sure.
Grateful Dead masters at changing gears.
Besides the Drum kits need to be nailed back
to the floor after that sonic onslaught
Still think this could have Made a decent encore.
Any version of SHIP from 1974.
Stephen>the 1st AIKO>NFA>Sugar Magnolia.
They don't tip the STEPHEN.
Tight into the Vocals, good pace!
Garcia very strong on his lead
they are really moving it along
So they don't get that last vocal
about the answer man?
NFA beat into AIKO
quickly to NFA
Pretty unique debut for Aiko
Not at all what I expected
They are tearing up the NFA
Almost has a Nobody's Fault edge
Sweet transition out of NFA jam
Some of my best shows nod to Sugar Magnolia.
And they ride it all the way to the Sunshine Daydream.
It is almost an out of body experience at this point.
I know why the caged bird sings..
Pretty UJB,, makes for a great encore.
A tough encore after jamming so heavy
they all rally Heart of Gold band around the vocals
"St. Louis, How Sweet it Is"-PHIL

Subject: A Pleasant Three Hours In St Louis...
(overlooked due to supposed weakness of setlist, one may presume?)
great performance and sound, adequate recording, fulfilling remastering. though perhaps not as fiery as some shows from that era, every song and every note on this one is solid and well presented.
