Born in Bamberg in 1915, Fred W. Lessing left Germany for England in 1934. He emigrated to the United States in 1942 and immediately began work for the Stewart Stamping Company as a bookkeeper. Seven years later he became a partner; in 1968 he was named president
Fred W. Lessing was chairman of the board of the Leo Baeck Institute and served as treasurer for over 25 years. He also served for many years as chairman of the Wiener Library in London. He was also involved with the Jewish Philanthropic Fund of 1933, and the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe
