The photograph album documents Alexander Wetmore's work in South America for the U.S. Department Agriculture, Bureau of Biological Survey, 1920-1921. He was investigating the distribution of life zones of North American migratory birds in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. Photographs sometimes include numbers (assigned by Wetmore), date, and caption with description and location. Sometimes a lack of negative is indicated. Images document events through out his travels including the voyage to South America; life aboard ship; and sites throughout Montevideo, Uruguay. In vicinity of Las Palmas, Chaco, Argentina he includes images of vegetation, terrain, and examples of birds seen at observation sites; lodgings; scrub forest and savanna; Toba Indians and their homes; local markets; ferries and vessels at work on the rivers. For other locations, he documents much the same subject matter: lodgings, local laborers and farmers at work, local bird traps; wetlands; lengua indians; birds and their nests; sand dunes south of cabo san antonio ar; and transportation during trip. Includes photographs of Wetmore, Carl Hettman, and Fred Hettman
