Old House Mysteries |
I've put together a list of all the 'old house' mysteries posted to IA that I and others have found. These are dramas and comedies that take place primarily in an old house, mansion, or castle, and involve a number of suspects, secret passages, and often have hands reaching out toward someone, ghosts, reporters, bad weather, well you get the idea.

The Living Ghost.

Thanks, but this is straight up horror rather than a mystery.

Thanks for pointing out
The Cat and the Canary (1927), which I uploaded *sigh*, and
And Then There Were None (1945). I've added them to the list. the other films aren't here at Feature Films.

Re: Old House Mysteries |
While
The Corpse Vanishes has the spooky old house with requisite secret passages, it lacks mystery. It's really a horror movie. Still, it was fun to see again, better than I remembered. Can you imagine what it would be like if David Cronenberg remade it?

Re: Old House Mysteries |
Hey, I love Old House/Haunted Mansion movies. Can you tell me more about some of the ones you've listed, i.e. which ones are your favorites and what are worth watching? Thanks!
Also, archive.org doesn't have it but "The Old Dark House" (1931) dir by James Whale is fantastic.

Whoops, make that 1932, not 1931, for The Old Dark House.

Re: Old House Mysteries |
I love them, too.
The Old Dark House is still under copyright, so it can't be posted here.
My favorites are:
House on Haunted Hill, The Black Raven, The Crooked Circle, The Ghost Walks, The Thirteenth Guest, Topper Returns, Bulldog Drummond's Secret Police, The Rogue's Tavern, and One Frightened Night..
A Shriek in the Night and Midnight Manhunt aren't old house mysteries, but are good mystery/comedies.
These are all worth watching and rewatching.

Re: Old House Mysteries |
Awesome! Thanks for your response!
Here's another question-- what movie would you say has the most iconic "dark house" cliches... i.e. the Victorian mansion, candelabras, cobwebs, secret passages, weird butlers, etc... basically everything you'd see in a "Scooby Doo" episode?

Re: Old House Mysteries |
Only one film here has all of those clichés, and that's
Topper Returns. It's also well produced and acted, and very funny. The bad guy doesn't turn out to be a real estate developer, though.
